The anthropological literature on transplant, though theoretically and ethnographically rich, does not address religion in any substantial way. And while bio-ethical considerations of transplant regularly address religion, treatments are generally circumscribed to a list of various faith traditions and their stance toward organ transplant. Such a presentation reduces “religion” to the world’s recognized faith traditions, “religious actors” to the official spokespersons of these traditions, and “religious belief” to moral injunctions. The objective of the thesis was to illuminate the prominent place of religion in the lived experience of transplant recipients and donors, in the public policy and professional activities of transplant officials, and in the transplant discourses of North America

Analysts have taken positions either supporting or attacking multicultural policy, yet there is insufficient research concerning the public policy of multiculturalism as it is understood and practiced in the lives of Canadians. This analysis approaches multiculturalism as a text which is constituent of social relations within Canadian society. Data from the Regina Refugee Research Project are analyzed within Nancy Fraser’s social justice framework to explore the manner in which multiculturalism and associated policies are understood and enacted in the lived experience of newcomers. Newcomers’ accounts of multiculturalism are compared with five themes identified via textual analysis of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act—diversity, harmony, equality, overcoming barriers, and resource. Embedded within the accounts newcomers offered of Canadian multiculturalism are relations of ruling that can be understood within the context of struggles for recognition and social justice. Further research is needed to investigate the relational processes in which differing perceptions of and experiences with multiculturalism are embedded and to compare the present accounts with those of other groups of immigrants and Canadian-born.

Educated and trained both as a sociocultural anthropologist and as an urban planner, I have had as a career goal combining these disciplinary perspectives in applied settings. I have been particularly interested in issues relating to the implementation of urban public policy from the perspective of the target group(s). While pursuing contract work, I also set for myself the professional task of exploring the roles, methodology, and ethical considerations which might arise in representing the interests of target groups. My immediate goals were, first, to be hired or funded by groups whose problems I would be addressing and, second, to be judged competent (in both the group's and my own estimation) in representing the group's views in the public arena.

The goals of the Japanese chapter of the Transplant Recipients International Organization are to act as a mediator in the provision of mutual aid to transplant recipients, candidates, and their families and to provide education in both the public and professional arenas to promote organ transplantation in Japan. Since 1991, members of the Japanese chapter of the Transplant Recipients International Organization have acted as volunteer facilitators for more than 150 transplant candidates and recipients. The organization's activities have included fund-raising to cover the costs of transplantation, preparing an original donor card for distribution, and petitioning members of the Diet (the Japanese legislative body) 14 times, including speaking at public hearings twice and submitting a petition requesting early passage of the organ transplant bill. The Japanese Diet finally passed an organ transplant bill in June 1997. The activities of the Japanese chapter of the Transplant Recipients International Organization have contributed to the promotion of organ transplantation in Japan and to understanding and support for transplantation within the Japanese community as a whole.

This article synthesizes the major points made in the preceding essays on the topic of “Hormesis and Ethics.” The questions and concerns raised in these essays are organized into three general categories: (1) scientific issues, (2) practical concerns, and (3) “explicitly ethical” considerations. The present article concludes with several suggestions. First, researchers would do well to address scientific concerns about the generalizability of hormesis. Second, it would be helpful to gather further information about the frequency that hormetic effects are beneficial for organisms over the long term. Third, more information is needed about the toxic exposures that the public is already receiving and about the potential synergistic effects of those exposures. Fourth, further reflection is warranted about whether regulations should, on one hand, maximize the ratio of benefits to risks for the population as a whole or, on the other hand, protect individuals from health risks to which they do not consent and for which they cannot easily be compensated.

Previously, Indonesia only issued Identity Cards for citizens who had reached the age of 17 years. However, after the presence of a new policy from the Interior Ministry of the Republic of Indonesia contained in the Republic of Indonesia Minister of Home Affairs Regulation Number 2 concerning Child Identity Cards, now Indonesian citizens who are less than 17 years old can have an identity card in the form of a Child Identity Card. The main problem in this research are the limitations of blanks and need additional personnel to improve services, especially in the context of issuing child Identity Cards. Besides, the realization of the issuance of child identity cards still far from the target and socialization to the public has not been conveyed in its entirety.. This study aims to examine how the implementation of Child Identity card in Bandung Regency. The research method used is qualitative with descriptive approach. This research is presented by using a narrative that discusses the implementation of child identity card policies in Bandung Regency. The focus of this research emphasizes the implementation model of Edward III covering communication, resources, disposition, and bureaucratic structure.
