Otitis media is one of the most common infectious diseases of the middle ear in preschool age, but its relationship with vestibular dysfunction remains controversial. The aim of the study was to carry out a comparative analysis of stabilometric indicators of preschool children with suppurative and non-suppurative otitis media. Materials and methods: 22 children with suppurative otitis media and 22 children with non-suppurative otitis media at the age from 4 to 7 years were examined by the method of static stabilometry on the device “MPFI Stabilograph 1” (LLC "ASTER IT", Kharkov, Ukraine). We took into account the indices of variation and distribution of the center of pressure, spectral and correlation indices of the stabilogram, as well as integral indices of stability (length, velocity and angle of postural oscillations) and the quality of the balance function in two sensory states (open and closed eyes), which were calculated in the software providing StabiliS. Results. In children with non-suppurative otitis media, the coordinates of the center-of-pressure corresponded (7.04 [2.16–10.09]; -1.14 [-28.90–9.11]), and with suppurative otitis media – (7.04 [3.30–16.16]; -13.72 [(-25.17)–(-10.30)]) with closed eyes. The averaged figure of the projection of the center-of-pressure in the test with eyes closed is actually represented by a circle in both groups, but with open eyes it is represented by an ellipse, which, in case of non-suppurative otitis media, is stretched along the sagittal axis, and in case of suppurative otitis media, along the frontal axis. In both sensory states, children with non-suppurative otitis media were characterized by large (p≤0.05) values of KurtosisX, Length and lower (p≤0.05) values of CC0X, Pup2Sigma compared with non-purulent otitis media. Conclusions: In preschool age, suppurative otitis media more significantly disrupts the balance function compared with non-suppurative otitis media, which was manifested by a significant decrease in the stability of the main stance and the predictability of oscillatory movements compared with non-suppurative otitis media

The aim of the research – assessment of vestibular function in children with acute purulent otitis media by computer static stabilometry compared with typically developed children of the same age. Materials and methods: 22 children with purulent otitis media aged 4 to 7 years and 30 practically healthy peers were examined by static stabilometry on the device “MPFI stabilograph 1” (Kharkiv, Ukraine). Indicators of variation and shape of the pressure center distribution, spectral-correlation indicators of stabilograms, as well as integral indicators of stability (length, velocity and angle of postural oscillations) were taken into account and the equilibrium functions of the two sensory states (open and closed eyes) are calculated in the StabiliS software. Results: purulent otitis media causes posterior displacement of the absolute coordinates of the pressure center. In the state with closed eyes, children with purulent otitis differ from their healthy coevals by 14 of 24 stabilometric parameters, including stabilogram length, speed, angle and amplitude of oscillations, giving way to them in the stability of equilibrium. Children with purulent otitis media are more sensitive to the visual canal of postural control than their coevals. Involvement of visual afferents in postural control significantly improves balance maintenance in children with purulent otitis by reducing deviations of postural oscillations, which is reflected in the probable changes of 9 out of 24 stabilometric parameters compared to control. Conclusions: In preschool age, purulent otitis media leads to latent vestibular dysfunction, which is manifested by a violation of the stability of the vertical posture in a state with closed eyes and is compensated by visual-vestibulo-proprioceptive integration in the process of postural control.

Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is used to assess vestibular function, but vestibular responses can exhibit variability depending on protocols or intensities used. We measured head acceleration in healthy subjects to identify an objective motor threshold on which to base GVS intensity when assessing postural responses. Thirteen healthy right-handed subjects stood on a force platform, eyes closed, head facing forward. An accelerometer was placed on the vertex to detect head acceleration, and electromyography activity of the right soleus was recorded. GVS (200 ms; current steps 0.5;1-4mA) was applied in a binaural and bipolar configuration. 1) GVS induced a biphasic accelerometer response at a latency of 15 ms. Based on response amplitude, we constructed a recruitment curve for all participants and determined the motor threshold. In parallel, the method of limits was used to devise a more rapid approach to determine motor threshold. 2) We observed significant differences between motor threshold based on therecruitment curve and perceptual thresholds (sensation/perception of movement). No significant difference was observed between the motor threshold based on the method of limits and perceptual thresholds . 3) Using orthogonal polynomial contrasts, we observed a linear progression between multiples of the objective motor threshold (0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.5x motor threshold) and the 95% confidence ellipse area, the first peak of center of pressure velocity, and the short and medium latency responses in the soleus. Hence, an objective motor threshold and a recruitment curve for GVS were determined based on head acceleration, which could increase understanding of the vestibular system.

In order to solve the problem of differential settlement, seepage flow and stability between the new and old dam boundary in capacity increasing of the plain reservoirs, the comparative analysis on the stability of the dam slope with different methods on dealing with the new and old dam boundary was performed by numerical simulation with FLAC3D. The result shows that combining the new and old dam by using geogrid indicates superiority for reducing differential settlement, improving the dam stability and safety, etc. In the meantime, on the basis of actual site investigation and theoretical analysis, combined with the requirements of design, construction and management in capacity increasing of the plain reservoirs, the key construction technology was put forward and widely applied foreground, which can improve the quality of the construction, reduce engineering disease and provide references for capacity increasing engineering of in plain reservoirs.

Introduction It is essential to determine the quality of life among individuals with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). However, there is limited literature on health-related quality of life measurements in Kannada-speaking individuals with CSOM. Objectives The present study attempted to translate and validate Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media Questionnaire-12 (COMQ-12) and Chronic Otitis Media Outcome Test-15 (COMOT-15) in Kannada. Method The English questionnaires were translated and back-translated, and they were later verified for content validity. The developed questionnaires were then administered to 100 individuals with CSOM for further validation. Results The results of the study showed that the translated questionnaires have good internal consistency for measuring quality of life among individuals with CSOM. The study also showed that Kannada-speaking individuals with CSOM show significant impairment in their health-related quality of life measures. Conclusions The impairments were more related to ear symptoms and psychological issues. However, test-retest reliability of the developed questionnaire and its further validation are essential. Thus, these questionnaires attempt to understand the problems of the individuals with CSOM from the patients' perspective and help clinicians provide the appropriate management.

Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of hearing aids on body balance function in a strictly controlled auditory environment. Methods We recorded the findings of 10 experienced hearing aid users and 10 normal-hearing participants. All the participants were assessed using posturography under eight conditions in an acoustically shielded non-reverberant room: (1) eyes open with sound stimuli, with and without foam rubber, (2) eyes closed with sound stimuli, with and without foam rubber, (3) eyes open without sound stimuli, with and without foam rubber, and (4) eyes closed without sound stimuli, with and without foam rubber. Results The auditory cue improved the total path area and sway velocity in both the hearing aid users and normal-hearing participants. The analysis of variance showed that the interaction among eye condition, sound condition, and between-group factor was significant in the maximum displacement of the center-of-pressure in the mediolateral axis (F [1, 18] = 6.19, p = 0.02). The maximum displacement of the center-of-pressure in the mediolateral axis improved with the auditory cues in the normal-hearing participants in the eyes closed condition (5.4 cm and 4.7 cm, p < 0.01). In the hearing aid users, this difference was not significant (5.9 cm and 5.7 cm, p = 0.45). The maximum displacement of the center-of-pressure in the anteroposterior axis improved in both the hearing aid users and the normal-hearing participants.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is one of the most common ear diseases in developing countries with a varying incidence of 3% to 57%. It the disease process is further divided into mucosal type and squamosal type depending on clinical presentation. The mainstay of therapy in CSOM remains surgery which aims at eradication of disease and restoring the hearing mechanism. The main objective of our study was to evaluate the changes and impact of tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy as a surgical treatment modality in mucosal type of CSOM.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> A prospective study was conducted in Rajarajeshwari Medical College and Hospital between November 2015 and June 2017, involving 50 patients with mucosal type of chronic otitis media. These patients, after complete clinical examination and hearing analysis, underwent tympanoplasty with cortical mastoidectomy. Follow-up of the patients was done at one month and three months after the surgery where the parameters recorded preoperatively were assessed.  </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> The graft uptake three months after the surgery was 94%. Patients reported a subjective improvement in symptoms of ear discharge, decreased hearing, earache and tinnitus to 94%, 70%, 86% and 78% respectively. There was hearing improvement in ears that had discharge preoperatively and those ears that did not.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Chronic suppurative otitis media is a very common problem and it can lead to recurrent ear discharge and hearing problems. Timely intervention is necessary as early diagnosis results in good surgical outcomes and can make an impact on patient’s quality of life.</p>

The effect of deflector curvature on hydrodynamic performances of a double-slotted cambered otter-board was investigated using engineering models in a wind tunnel. Four different curvature (0.06,0.09, 0.12 and 0.15) were evaluated at a wind speed of 28 m/s. Parameters measured included: drag coefficient Cx, lift coefficient Cy, pitch moment coefficient Cm, center of pressure coefficient Cp , over a range of angle of attack (0° to 70°). These coefficients were used in analyzing the differences in the performance among the four otter-board models. Results showed that the maximum lift coefficient Cy of the otter-board model with the curvature (0.06) of two deflectors was highest (2.020 at °=55°). The maximum Cy/Cx of the otter-board with the curvature (0.12) of two deflectors was highest (3.655 at °=22.5°). A comparative analysis of Cm and Cp showed that the stability of otter-board model with the curvature (0.12) of two deflectors is better in pitch, and the stability of otter-board model with the curvature (0.06) of two deflectors is better in roll. The findings of this study can offer useful reference data for the structural optimization of otter-boards for trawling.
