The freshwater shrimp species Caridina cucphuongensis (family Atyidae) was poorly described by Dang (1980). Moreover, the taxonomic status of this species is hard to verify as the types have been lost. This study provides a redescription of the species and designation of a neotype specimen. The Caridina cucphuongensis Dang, 1980 is characterized by short rostrum with large teeth on the dorsal margin, long stylocerite, subrectangular endopod of male first pleopod, and short appendix interna of the male second pleopod.

Prior to the present study, literature reviews revealed that 31 species of bats belonging to six families and 14 genera were identified in Cat Ba National Park in Northern Vietnam However, the conservation status of many species remains unclear and is still subject to debate. Among the 31 species, 11 are common while the remainder have been rarely captured since 1942. At least two species, Hipposideros alongensis and H. khaokhouayensis, which are globally considered vulnerable, are very common in Cat Ba National Park. This paper provides an update on the current status of each species based on data from recent field surveys with reference to previous publications and the current IUCN Red List (iucnredlist.org). Results from the recent surveys included eight individuals provisionally identified as Myotis cf. pilosus. The taxonomic status of five species (Aselliscus dongbacanus, Hipposideros gentilis, Hipposideros grandis, Miniopterus magnater, Murina harrisoni) are updated following recent assessments. This information will inform future research and conservation actions.

We report on a new species of the genus Micryletta from limestone karst areas in northern Vietnam, which is described on the basis of molecular and morphological evidence. Micryletta nigromaculata sp. nov. is restricted to narrow areas of subtropical forests covering karst massifs in Cat Ba National Park (Hai Phong Province) and Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh Province) at elevations of 90–150 m a.s.l. In the phylogenetic analyses, the new species is unambiguously positioned as a sister lineage to all remaining species of Micryletta. We also discuss genealogical relationships and taxonomic problems within the genus Micryletta, provide molecular evidence for the validity of M. erythropoda and discuss the taxonomic status of M. steinegeri. We suggest the new species should be considered as Endangered (B1ab(iii), EN) following the IUCN’s Red List categories. A discussion on herpetofaunal diversity and conservation in threatened limestone karst massifs in Southeast Asia is provided.

The present study is based on oribatid mite material (Acari, Oribatida) collected from Tam Dao National Park (Northern Vietnam) in 1988. A list of identified taxa, including 119 species from 80 genera and 47 families, is presented; of these, 13 species (Epilohmannoides rabori, Camisia spinifer, Sadocepheus undulatus, Eremobelba flexuosa, Hammerella excisa, Suctobelbella inenodabilis, Dolicheremaeus auritus, Eupelops acromios, Protoribates genitalis, Allogalumna machadoi, Carinogalumna philippinensis, Pergalumna magnipora capillaris, Galumnella nipponica) and five genera (Epilohmannoides, Camisia, Sadocepheus, Brassiella, Carinogalumna) are recorded in the Vietnamese fauna for the first time, and two species (Tokunocepheus mizusawai, Flagellozetes (Cosmogalumna) ornatus), one genus (Tokunocepheus) and one family (Tokunocepheidae) are recorded in the Oriental region for the first time. Two new species are described: Ramusella paraarcuata sp. nov. differs from Ramusella arcuata Mahunka & Mahunka-Papp, 2012 by the larger body size, lamellar setae similar in length and thickness to interlamellar setae, the presence of two or three branches on bothridial setae, and the absence of notogastral setae c. Neoribates paragracilis sp. nov. differs from Neoribates gracilis Travé, 1972 by the larger body size, and the presence of long apex (not shorter than head) on bothridial setae.

Based on genetic, morphological and chromatical comparisons we evaluate the taxonomic status of two southern Vietnamese forest-dwelling populations of the Cyrtodactylus irregularis species complex. We confirm the allocation of the population from Binh Chau—Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve (Ba Ria—Vung Tau Province) to C. cattienensis and we describe the population of Nui Chua National Park (Ninh Thuan Province) as Cyrtodactylus sangi sp. nov. This brings to 18 the number of species within the C. irregularis complex and to 41 the number of described Cyrtodactylus species recorded from Vietnam.

A new species of Quercus (Fagaceae), Q. ngochoaensis, from Ba Vi National Park, Ha Noi, northern Vietnam is described and illustrated. This species is morphologically similar to Q. glauca in having glabrous twigs, cuneate leaf base, two or three fruits per infructescence, almost entire margin of lamellate rings on cupule except the lowest three rings, slightly convex scar at the base of a nut. However, it differs from Q. glauca in having smaller leaves, cup-shaped cupule enclosing 1/2–2/3 of the nut, 7–8 lamellate rings on cupule, and subglobose nut. In addition to the description, DNA barcodes of the two partial plastid regions of matK, rbcL and the nuclear region of ITS of the new species are provided.

The first record of the genus Sinotympana Lee, 2009 from Vietnam is presented. Sinotympana caobangensis sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) from Phia Oac—Phia Den National Park, Cao Bang Province, northern Vietnam is described as new. Photographs of an adult male, illustrations of the male genitalia, a distribution map and biological data for Sinotympana caobangensis sp. nov. are provided.

AbstractA new genus and new species of potamid freshwater crab from Burma (present Myanmar), Flabellamon pretzmanni, is described. Flabellamon differs from other potamid genera in having a flat, transverse carapace with well developed epibranchial teeth which are separated from the external orbital angles by deep V-shaped clefts, and a short and relatively stout G1 which has a well developed fold on the dorsal margin of the terminal segment. The taxonomic status of two supposedly allied species, Potamon turgidulum Alcock, 1909, and Potamon kuehnelti Pretzmann, 1963, is also discussed.

The oribatid mite family Liacaridae (Acari, Oribatida) is recorded in Vietnam for the first time. Two new species of liacarids of the genera Liacarus and Xenillus are described from Tam Dao National Park, northern Vietnam. Liacarus vietnamensis sp. nov. is similar to L. laterostris Mihelčič, 1954 in the morphology of lamellar cusps (inner teeth well-developed; interlamellar tubercle absent) and in having long interlamellar setae and short notogastral setae, but differs by the directions of lamellar cusps and morphology of bothridial setae. Xenillus tamdaoensis sp. nov. is similar to X. longipilus Pérez-Íñigo & Peña, 1995 in having long notogastral setae, insertion of notogastral setae lm posterior to la, and the presence of an interlamellar tubercle, but differs by the morphology and position of lamellar cusps, size of the interlamellar tubercle and length of interlamellar setae.
