It is a common sentiment among homileticians that preaching requires exegeting both the scriptural text and the congregational context. The relevancy of the preaching message, it is argued, depends in part upon a deep knowledge of the congregational culture. The preacher is therefore encouraged to “read” the culture of the congregation and discern how the symbols, practices, and actions of the congregation are used to make meaning so that the preacher might construct a fitting sermon. In this way, the congregation is likened to a text that awaits a reading by a literate observer. In this paper, I examine the limitations of such an analogy arguing that while a semiotic approach to congregations has merit it is often blind to the ways in which power and production influence the creation and reproduction of the congregational culture. Finally, the paper concludes with descriptions from recent homiletical works that offer productive alternatives to the semiotic approach to congregational study.

Abstract This article applies the theory of archaeological semiotics to the study of the “Olmec” style. A semiotic approach differs from an iconographic study because it provides the possibility for complex analysis of all significant traits of material archeological objects without distinction between stylistic and iconographic traits. In this context, the semiotic analysis of the Olmec style as a sign system shows that its particular signs, which can be defined as stylistic traits because of the lack of specific iconographic meanings, simultaneously participated in the creation and transformation of cultural meanings. This phenomenon reflected the “macrosignified” of Formative Mesoamerican cultures, associated with a structure that linked together various meanings throughout the culture.

As a special type of multimodal text, picture books for children are highly valued in the creation of meaning by the integrative use of verbal and visual semiotic resources. Informed by Painter and Martin’s framework of visual narratives, this paper primarily deals with the interpersonal meanings encoded and expressed by the two semiotics (image and verbiage) within the Chinese picture books. It aims to analyse the visual and verbal choices available for writers to establish engagement between various participants. In the hope of investigating the collaboration and interplay of verbal and visual semiotics to construe interpersonal meanings, it examines the attitudinal meanings inscribed or invoked in picture books, exploring the ways in which visual and verbal resources are co-instantiated to encode attitudinal convergence and also divergence.

Although diverse, the potential business opportunities for biotechnology outside the biopharmaceutical market are very large. White biotechnology can offer sustainable operations and products, while investments tend to be lower than those in red biotechnology. But a number of bottlenecks and roadblocks in Switzerland must be removed to realise the full potential of white biotechnology. This was also the point of view of Oreste Ghisalba, who wanted to be part of a new initiative to facilitate the creation of additional business, new processes and new products. This initiative requires the identification and the use of synergies and a much better cooperation between academia and industry through targeted networking. Unfortunately, we must carry on with this task without Oreste, whom we will miss for his deep knowledge and friendship.

In the last two decades, women’s issues have been attracting public attention, particularly for those who see and study women from male world of construction. In the literature framework, the existing problems are not limited to the women’s involvement in the creation, criticism, and as readers only. However, the growth of the creation of female poets has opposed to men's superiority towards women. The role of gender and institution of marriage, which have been the symbol of hegemonic masculinity, has become a deconstruction and parody. The aim of this study is to dismantle the gender dictions in the Dorothea’s poem, which reflect the hegemonic masculinity. The object of this research is the poetry collections entitiled ‘Nikah Ilalang’ by Dorothea Rosa Herliany. Technique of data collection used was notetaking. In analyzing the data, Dorothea's poetries are studied by using heuristic and hermeneutic techniques. In using hermeneutic technique, this study used semiotic approach and potential/actual hypogram in order to find a proper model as matrix actualization.

Song is a work of art created from the creation of events that the author has seen, felt, heard, and experienced. Likewise, the parlinary song "Meraih Bintang" by Burman Siburian has a meaning that contains a million messages and messages for listeners. This study aims to determine the values of the meaning of motivation contained in the lyrics of the song "Meraih Bintang". This research is a qualitative descriptive with a semiotic approach according to Ferdinand de Saussure. Sources of data in this study are the lyrics of the song "Meraih Bitang. Researchers applied reading and note-taking techniques to collect data. The data analysis technique used is based on the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that the lyrics of the song "Meraih Bintang" have a motivational value as shown in the first verse, namely the songwriter specifically dedicates this song to athletes to compete with enthusiasm and never give up. In the second verse, the meaning is found in order to achieve a dream, we must have strong faith and pray to the Creator. The third verse by the songwriters says that in order to reach our dreams, we must focus on one goal. The fourth stanza is that the songwriter tries not to give up easily in achieving dreams. The fifth stanza is conveyed that we must cooperate with determination, sportsmanship and solidarity in a competition.Lagu merupakan karya seni yang tercipta dari hasil kreasi terhadap peristiwa yang dilihat, dirasa, didengar, dan juga pernah dialami langsung oleh penulis. Sama halnya dengan lagu “Meraih Bintang” karya Parlin Burman Siburian memiliki makna yang mengandung sejuta pesan dan amanat untuk para pendengar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui nilai-nilai makna motivasi yang terdapat pada lirik lagu “Meraih Bintang”. Penelitian ini merupakan kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan semiotika menurut Ferdinand de Saussure. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah lirik lagu “Meraih Bitang”. Peneliti menerapkan teknik baca dan catat untuk mengumpulkan data. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan berdasarkan model Miles dan Huberman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lirik lagu “Meraih Bintang” memiliki nilai motivasi yang ditunjukan pada bait pertama yaitu pencipta lagu secara khusus mempersembahkan lagu ini untuk para atlet agar berkompetisi dengan semangat dan pantang menyerah. Pada bait kedua ditemukan makna demi meraih suatu mimpi, kita harus mempunyai keyakinan yang kuat serta berdoa kepada sang Khalik. Bait ketiga pencipta lagu menyampaikan untuk menggapai mimpi, kita harus fokus pada satu tujuan.  Bait keempat disini pencipta lagu mencoba mengajak untuk tidak mudah berputus asa dalam meraih mimpi. Bait kelima disampaikan bahwa tekad, sportifitas dan solidaritas harus kita gandeng dalam suatu kompetisi.

AbstractIn this paper we develop a methodological proposal for the study of communications within organizations from a semiotic approach. This proposal includes a semiotic study based on three central concepts: 1. the sign and its development – we begin with Charles S. Peirce’s well-known concept of sign and continue with the discourse transformation perspective; 2. the development of operations for the analysis of semiotic expressions to find a specific mechanism which enables us to analyze interpretative-cognitive processes in iconic, indexical, and symbolic expressions; and 3. interpretation processes in organizations developed from the analysis of the role of dynamic objects in the creation of signs to try to develop a descriptive, analytic, and reconstructive approach on how dynamic objects work and go further in the description of possible semiotic worlds. We develop concepts such as social semiosis (as a system), semiotic expressions (as updates to this system) in organizational environments, and the concept of semiotic actors closely related to the construction of an organizational world. This study enables us to approach the dynamics in communicational processes within organizations in all its elements to perform a critical analysis.

This paper aims at discussing some theoretical aspects of the creation of term neologisms through translation, using as examples Greek terms from the field of Translation Studies itself. The premise of the paper is that while a basically semiotic approach tends to be the prevailing one in theoretical discussions, in practice, the creation of neologisms seems to be mainly achieved through correspondences at signifier level only, often leading to Greek neologisms which are not totally in line with the notion (signified) lying behind the designation of a term. Within this wider theoretical framework provided by the semiotic approach, this paper will propose that a combination of terminological unit (level of signifier), notion (level of signified) and definition (transitional level) is an operational theoretical framework for the successful creation of Greek neologisms, using as example three cases taken from the Greek adaptation of the Translation terminology by Delisle et al. (1999).

  This article presents an extended interpretation of the meaning of semiotic approach, which allows to comprehend from the perspective of semiotics not only the symbols that are adequately described in linguistics and semiotics, but also iconic signs, symbols, schemes, and artworks. For a better understanding, the author suggests two cases, one of which is taken from culturological studies, the other – from children's literature. Leaning on the material of these cases, the author formulates the peculiarities of broadened understanding of semiotic approach. The effectiveness of such understanding is illustrated by the example of semiotic interpretation of Roman Faerstein’s literary work. As a result of the conducted research, the author proposed an extended interpretation of semiotic approach, which includes the analysis of situation and problems, resolution of which leads to the creation of new semiotic tools; untraditional understanding of these tools; reconstruction of reality, which is signified by various semiotic tools. In the author’s opinion, structuring of the reality of a certain text is attributed to semiotic interpretation, since the reality alongside other schemes, signs, symbols, metaphors and other semiotic formations, is an important semiotic concept in terms of the augmented meaning of semiotic approach.

Purpose. The article aims to demonstrate the validity of the functional typology of signs proposed by the author in the semiotic approach to the analysis of advertising slogans. Advertising texts perform their functions in the communicative situation of interaction between the advertiser and the client. Results. The analysis shows language mechanisms of involvement of the addressee in the creation of an advertising image, ways of influence on the addressee, ways of presentation of goods or service. Thus the main functions of the sign – identification, regulation and modeling – are realized. Conclusion. The analysis of advertising serves as an illustration of the proposed functional classification of the sign; it highlights specific language mechanisms of interaction and influence on the addressee.
