This study aims to investigate how cartoon film based-discussion can improve students’ speaking. This Classroom Action Research was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Jember. The subjects of the study were 22 female and 10 male students. The data were collected through English speaking test. From the test result, cartoon film based-discussion was very effective; there was a significant increase in student’s speaking skill (M=76.09 in Cycle 1 to M=77.28 in Cycle 2) and students’ active participation (76.56% - 79.68%). This leads to conclusion that cartoon film based-discussion can improve students’ speaking and active participation by three main factors; First, they can discuss about particular topics in the discussion before taking the Speaking test. Second, cartoon film succeeds to stimulate students’ mind in collecting vocabularies during watching. Third, students’ grammar and pronunciation are also increased because they are accustomed to the structure of English subtitle provided in the movie.

Due to several reasons, pronunciation instruction had often been neglected in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes. Consequently, many EFL learners always find it difficult to speak confidently because of their poor pronunciation. This study is a three-cycled action research aimed at enhancing EFL students’ pronunciation by using the explicit teaching approach. The participants were 21 students majoring in English Education at Universitas Kristen Indonesia who attended Integrated Skills IV class in the even semester of 2015/2016 Academic Year. The participants were provided with special practices on pronunciation, including watching video or listening to English expressions containing elements of English pronunciation difficult to them, drillings the elements, recording and transcribing their utterances, and comparing the transcriptions with those of native speakers’. Data were collected through tests and questionnaires. The results revealed that the explicit teaching approach enhanced the participants’ English pronunciation skills, as shown by the increase of their average scores in the four tests administered during the actions implementation. The survey results revealed that for the participants the approach was interesting, helped pronunciation development, and increased self-confidence in English speaking. Seaman’s English Education Indonesia  (SEE Indonesia) is an informal educational institution located in North Jakarta that offers a variety of courses for seafarers, mainly the Marlins Test course, and an English language test for seafarers. Because it’s new, it is fitting that the level of brand awareness  by consumers is still very low. Based on data from customer visits in SEE Indonesia per year since its inception, only 768 people have visited SEE Indonesia, whether they only came or used the services of courses. This number is still very small compared to the total number of Indonesian seafarers, which are around 850,000. Therefore a marketing communication program is needed so that SEE Indonesia can increase brand awareness  and win the market from its competitors. In order to increase the brand awareness  of SEE Indonesia, then in this work the writer will use the Participatory Action Research method, where this method will involve people involved in existing problems to actively participate so that they are expected to get a solution right. The results of the Participatory Action Research will then become information material for the SOSTAC theory that will be used to create the SEE Indonesia marketing communication program.

The paper describes the process and outcomes of an action research project with the aim of determining whether focusing classroom input on voiced and unvoiced consonant sounds has a positive effect on their production. Statistics were derived from English-speaking respondents listening to native Arabic speaking participants from an experimental group, who had received input on the difference between these sounds, and practiced their production, as well as to speakers from a control group who had received neither input nor practice. The rates of intelligibility were compared, with the conclusion being that the provision of limited input on this pronunciation issue does not, generally speaking, result in the ability to produce the sounds with greater clarity.
