In the aftermath of the Cold War, many began to question the continuing efficacy, or at least call for reform, of collective security structures such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the United Nations Security Council. Yet, North East Asia never enjoyed a formal, institutionalised collective security structure. As Russia and the United States recede and China emerges in North East Asia, this article questions whether now is the time to consider such an arrangement. Financially, Japan and South Korea are locked into a symbiotic relationship with China (as is the United States), while the government in Beijing continues to militarise and lay territorial and maritime claims to large areas of the region. Moreover, the regime in North Korea, with its new nuclear capabilities, remains unpredictable. Consequently, central components to the question of collective security in North East Asia are the equally vexing questions of what to do about North Korea and whether a new formalised security arrangement would include or exclude the People's Republic of China.

The paper covers relevant issues, such as the current state of the tourism services sector in China, Japan, and South Korea. The significance is confirmed by the growing role of the North-East Asian countries in the world trade in services and the growing contribution of tourism to the global gross domestic product. The purpose of this study is to identify the features, problems, and prospects for the development of the tourism services sector in China, Japan, and South Korea. The paper uses methods of systematisation and typification, which made it possible to determine the specifics of the development of cultural tourism in the Far Eastern region among the current range of opinions and areas of cultural tourism research. The study uses the principles of historicism and objectivity, which allowed analysing the development and current state of tourist exchange. A cultural approach was also used to reconstruct the cultural and humanitarian population of North-East Asia through the mutual enrichment of nations and people. The systematic approach made it possible to understand the importance of humanitarian exchange between people and identified the universality of tourism.

The present article explores 44 medieval and early modern world maps. The subject of research are three graphic topoi, that evoke the image of the biblical and historical enemy from the north: Gog and Magog, Caspian Gates (Portae Caspiae) and the inclosed nations (inclusae nationes). These topoi were localized in north-east Asia. For this reason the title of the article includes the concept of the enclosed area of north-east Asia. There are also analyzed vignettes of the cities, which are located on the territory of the enclosed area. The aim of the article is to show the changes which over several centuries have occurred within the interpretation of these three topoi. This evolution has been closely associated with the expansion of geographical horizon of Europeans. Geopolitical and historical changes were also an important factor of this evolution. All these elements have an impact on the way of looking at the enclosed area of north-east Asia. Important factor was also philosophy and theology. Slows fear of the enemy from the north gave way to curiosity, and curiosity prompted the Europeans to get to know this part of Asia. Graphical topos has been replaced by geographical knowledge, that has been transferred to the maps.

The article deals with the unsolved territorial disputes inherited by East Asia countries (Japan, South Korea, China, Russia) after the World War II. It is shown how the countries of this region are trying to solve these problems or to use them in their own interests in domestic and foreign political actions.

The abstract presents the system of NW faults determining longitudinal zonation of regional geo-structures on the North-East Asia active margin. They defined linear and nested volcanogenic rocks of NW and SE Koryak orogenic belts and their association with ore regions. Transverse faults resulted in possible near-vertical dipping or uplifting of marginal geo-structures. Longitudinal-axial faults are zones of maximum geodynamic stresses arising in troughs of down-horizons’ layers and in curves of convex horizon’s layers. Vertical seismogenic columns with hypocenters of strong (M > 6,6) earthquakes of the Koryak seismic belt are formed on their junction with deep boundaries of multi-aged marine terrains.

The remote map‑making technique and results of field investigations made possible for the first time to reveal a great number of rock glaciers within the area of the Suntar‑Khayata Range (North‑East Asia). A total of 540 formations were identified. Among them, 47 rock glaciers were classified as corrie (cirque) tongue‑shaped formations and 493 ones – as niche lobe‑shaped (single‑ and multi‑lobe) rock glaciers. Occurrence of such formations is 8.4/100 km2, that is the largest in the North‑East Asia. The rock glaciers in this region are found within a range of true altitudes from 1297 up to 2402 m asl. The majority of active features, however, are confined to the interval between 1500 and 1900 m asl. Rock glaciers occur in the altitudinal range of 1297 to 2402 m asl. The majority of active features, however, are confined to the interval between 1500 and 1900 m asl, and the main part of active formations is located within the range of 1500‑2500 m. The frequency analysis of true altitudes of the rock‑glacier occurrence indicates that their formation can be caused by the hypsometry of the region relation to morphoclimatic zonality.
