Background: Chemotherapy is highly recommended for cancer treatment, however can cause some side effects such as nausea and vomiting. This will affect food intake and nutritional status in cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy. Aim: To describe nutritional status based on anthropometry Body Mass Index (BMI), hemoglobin (Hb), Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in RSUP. Dr. Wahidin sudirohusodo Makassar. Methode: This experiment uses a quantitative non-experimental research method with cross sectional approach on 1010 patients, nonprobability sampling with purposive sampling technique on 70 respondents, data collection with interview and observation techniques. Results: Nutritional status based on Body Mass Index (BMI) shows that 39 people (55.7%) had normal BMI values. About 37 people (52.9%) had good / normal nutritional status based on Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA)  while Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) reveals 100% of respondents experienced nutritional status problems. Conclusion: Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) is the best tool to identify nutritional status of cancer patients that undergo chemotherapy since this instrument is very sensitive and practical. Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) is good to assess nutritional status in subject who have lost weight drastically and shows signs of subcutaneous fat loss and muscle mass loss. Keyword: Cancer, chemotherapy, body mass index (BMI), Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA).

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The maintenance of nutrition for the person with ileostomy is a major challenge despite to the proper management of stoma eliminations. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status of people with ileostomy. METHOD: This is a cross-sectional study carried out on a population of 17 people with ileostomy enrolled in the Service of Attention to the Health of the Person with Stoma of level II, referring to a health region in Minas Gerais. The anthropometric evaluation consisted of the collection of weight, height, and calculation of body mass index. A 24-hour food recall and the nutritional assessment method Global Subjective Assessment were also evaluated. The data were analyzed by the Dietbox software, where the ingested nutrients were estimated, and by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 22.0. RESULTS: There was a predominance of a population composed of people over 50 years old, female, married and single, with family income between two and three minimum wages, incomplete elementary school and that did not exercise paid activity. The cancer was given as the main diagnosis that originated the stoma and had a surgery time of less than two years. Regarding nutritional status, most of the interviewees presented adequate body mass index, but more than half reported significant weight loss after the ileostomy. The predominant nutritional diagnosis provided by the General Subjective Assessment was “suspected malnutrition/moderate malnutrition”. On the other hand, the contribution of energy, carbohydrates, lipids, sodium, potassium, magnesium and vitamin B12 was considered insufficient in almost all the participants. CONCLUSION: Therefore, it is suggested the periodic evaluation of the nutritional status of this population. Thus, it is expected that preventive, therapeutic and maintenance dietary diagnosis and planning may contribute to the nutritional status of the person with the ileostomy.

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN SUBJECTIVE GLOBAL ASSESSMENT (SGA) OUTCOMES AND STROKE SEVERITYABSTRACTIntroduction: Stroke is a cerebrovascular disease caused by the sudden death of brain cells. Nutrition plays an important role in stroke. Inadequate intake of nutrients affects severity of stroke. Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) can be used to assess the nutritional status of stroke patients, while severity of stroke is known by assessing neurological deficits based on the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS).Aims: To determine the association between SGA outcomes and stroke severity based on NIHSS.Methods: A cross-sectional study with consecutive sampling in stroke patients who were treated in the neurological ward of Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung between August-October 2018. Subjective Global Assessment and NIHSS were assessed. Alternative statistical test Fisher’s exact test was used to see the relationship between these two variables. Results: Among 40 patients, 57.5% were female, 37.5% had a stroke at the age of 50-59 years, the main risk factor of stroke was hypertension. Recurrence stroke were more common (52.5%), with most of them were ischemic stroke (60%). The most common neurological deficit was hemiplegia. Subjects with malnutrition (SGA C) were 40%. Fifty percent patients had moderate neurological deficits based on NIHSS. The association between variables by Fisher’s exact test was 0.008.Discussion: There was a significant association between SGA outcomes and stroke severity based on NIHSS.Keywords: NIHSS, nutritional status, SGA, stroke severityABSTRAKPendahuluan: Stroke merupakan penyakit serebrovaskular yang disebabkan adanya kematian mendadak sel otak. Defisit neurologis terbanyak yaitu hemiplegia. Subjek dengan gizi buruk (SGA C) sebanyak 40%. Derajat keparahan NIHSS dengan defisit neurologis sedang yaitu 50%. Hubungan antar kedua variabel, uji alternative Fisher’s exact test memperoleh hasil 0,008.Diskusi: Terdapat hubungan yang bermakna antara luaran SGA dengan derajat keparahan stroke berdasarkan NIHSS.Kata kunci: Derajat keparahan stroke, NIHSS, SGA, status gizi

In hemodialysis patients, the prevalence of malnutrition is high; a decrease in muscle strength is observed.  The objective of the research was to evaluate the nutritional status of hemodialysis patients and the relationship between the nutritional status and muscle strength. Materials and Methods. Sixty hemodialysis patients (38 males, 22 females) were chosen from among volunteers. Food consumption, biochemical values, anthropometric measurements, body composition, physical activity status, subjective global assessment, and handgrip strength in individuals were examined. Results. According to subjective global assessment, 73.3% of patients were well-nourished, 26.7% of patients were moderately malnourished. In male patients, a moderate positive correlation was determined between handgrip strength and lean body mass (r=0.359, p<0.05), albumin level (r=0.408, p<0.05), energy intake (r=0.437, p<0.05), protein intake (r=0.345, p<0.05). In female patients, a moderate positive correlation was determined between handgrip strength and body weight (r=0.470, p<0.05), body mass index (r=0.472, p<0.05), triceps skinfold thickness (r=0.530, p<0.05), mid-upper arm circumference (r=0.515, p<0.05), mid-upper arm muscle circumference (r=0.557, p<0.05), lean body mass (r=0.470, p<0.05), body fat content (%) (r=0.588, p<0.05), albumin level (r=0.565, p<0.05). Conclusions. Handgrip strength alongside with more than one method of food consumption, biochemical parameters, subjective global assessment, anthropometric measurements, and body composition should be used for assessing the nutritional status in hemodialysis patients.

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the correlation between thickness of the muscle adductor pollicis and anthropometric measurements, body mass index and Subjective Global Assessment in the nutritional assessment of surgical patients. Methods The study population comprised patients admitted to the general and reconstructive surgery unit of a university hospital in the city of Vitória (ES), Brazil. The inclusion criteria were patients evaluated in the first 48 hours of admission, aged ≥20 years, hemodynamically stable, with no edema or ascites. Data analysis was performed using the software Statistical Package for Social Science 21.0, significance level of 5%. Results The sample consisted of 150 patients that were candidates to surgery, mean age of 42.7±12.0 years. The most common reasons for hospitalization were surgical procedures, gastrintestinal diseases and neoplasm. Significant association was observed between thickness of adductor pollicis muscle and Subjective Global Assessment (p=0.021) and body mass index (p=0.008) for nutritional risk. Significant correlation was found between thickness of adductor pollicis muscle and arm muscle circumference, corrected arm muscle area, calf circumference and body mass index. There were no significant correlations between thickness of adductor pollicis muscle and triceps skinfold and age. Conclusion The use of thickness of adductor pollicis muscle proved to be an efficient method to detect malnutrition in surgical patients and it should be added to the screening process of hospitalized patients, since it is easy to perform, inexpensive and noninvasive.
