ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate follicular growth and ovulatory rates in mares treated with an intravaginal progesterone device (P4) during the 10-day period, associated with the use of estradiol benzoate (EB). The results were compared during the transition period (ET) in the spring and the breeding season in the summer (ER). The variables were submitted to ANOVA (Tukey's test), considering P<0.05. No ovulation occurred during the permanence of the P4 implant in both experimental periods. The ovulatory rate in the ER was 100% (n = 8) and in the ET 62.5% (n = 5; P = 0.0547). Significant differences were observed (<0.001), in both periods, comparing follicular growth rates during the permanence of P4 device (ER: 1.33 ± 0.89mm/d; ET: 1.00 ± 0.81mm/d) to the period without P4 (ER: 3.63 ± 1.33 mm/d; ET: 3.31 ± 1.66 mm/d). The present study demonstrated applicability and efficiency of a hormonal protocol using P4 intravaginal device and EB for follicular control in mares, both during ET and ER.

ABSTRACT Estradiol benzoate (EB), estradiol cypionate (EC), and gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) were evaluated as ovulation inducers for TAI of crossbred lactating cows. In experiment I (n = 45), the follicular dynamics was evaluated, while in experiment II (n = 171) the reproductive efficiency was evaluated. All females were submitted to a synchronization protocol: insertion on day 0 (D0) of intravaginal progesterone -release intravaginal device (PRID; 1g) plus administration of EB 2mg; D8, PRID removal, administration of 0.150mg PGF2α and 400 IU of eCG, and cows were allocated into three treatments: 1) TEB9 - IM administration of 1mg EB on D9 and AI performed 52 hours after PRID removal; 2) TEC - IM administration of 1mg EC on D8 and AI performed 48 hours after withdrawal of PRID; and 3) TGnRH - administration of 100pg GnRH on D10 and AI performed 52 hours after removal of PRID. The follicular growth rate was lower in the EC group (p <0.05). There was no effect of treatments on ovulation and pregnancy rates (p >0.05). The use of EB, EC, and GnRH as ovulation inducers in the TAI protocol did not show marked differences in the evaluated patterns of follicular dynamics and pregnancy.

The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the effects of recombinant bovine somatropin (rbST), and the reuse of the progesterone (P4) releasing devices in resynchronization, on the pregnancy rates of Nellore cows submitted to fixed-time artificial insemination. A group of 123 multiparae Nellore cows, was submitted to a resynchronization protocol: on day 0 a Bovine Intravaginal Device (DIB® ) with 1,0g of P4 was implanted, associated with intramuscular administration of 2,0mg of estradiol benzoate (IM); on day 8 DIB was removed; and 1,0mg of estradiol cypionate, 0,15mg of prostaglandin F2? and 300 UI of equine chorionic gonadotropin were administered; on day 10, fixed-time artificial insemination was conducted (FTAI). The cows were randomized into G1 (n=12) – without rbST / with used Bovine Intravaginal Device, G2 (n=50) – without rbST / with new DIB, G3 (n=11) - with rbST / with used DIB and G4 (n=50) – with rbST/ with new DIB. rbST was introduced on the eighth day of the protocol. Sixty days after TAI, pregnancy diagnoses were conducted, via rectal palpation. Blood samples were taken on day 0, 8 and 10 of the protocol, in order to assess P4 plasma concentrations. Pregnancy rates were statistically evaluated through Generalized Linear Models Theory and their significance was tested with Analysis of Deviance. Pregnancy rates were 58%, 40%, 81% and 48% for G1, G2, G3 and G4, respectively, with significant statistical difference for G3. Plasma concentrations of P4 were not statistically different among groups, or collections. In view of the results obtained, we concluded that the administration of rbST in association with P4 DIB, used for the third time, improves pregnancy rates. Estrus resynchronization and re-insemination positively impacted pregnancy rates.

From 1987 to 1989, the cohort dynamics of Microtus montanus populations were studied at two montane meadow sites approximately 160 km apart, in northwestern Wyoming. The 1987 and 1988 breeding seasons differed markedly from each other. In 1987, melt off occurred in April, and the first cohort was born in May (cohort 1). The entire breeding season was favorable owing to frequent rainfall throughout the summer. Cohort 1 animals grew rapidly and females began breeding at 4–5 weeks of age. Likewise, cohort 2 (June) animals exhibited rapid growth and females were breeding at 7–8 weeks of age. Cohort 3 (July and August) animals grew more slowly and most entered the winter as prepubertal animals of subadult size. At the end of the summer, cohort 3 animals represented >70% of the voles recruited during the breeding season. In 1988, following melt off in late April, precipitation was below normal and the situation intensified to severe drought through the summer. The growth rates of cohort 1 and 2 animals were significantly lower than 1987 growth rates, and very few females attained sexual maturity. At the end of the summer, cohort 3 animals represented <25% of the total recruitment at both study sites. Such apparent phenotypic plasticity of growth and maturation appears to be an evolved adaptive strategy that is responsive to several environmental cues. Both study sites, although widely separated, exhibited virtually identical patterns throughout the study.

The most important barrier to the increase of buffalo productivity is an overall poor reproductive efficiency, characterized by late sexual maturity, seasonal anestrus and long periods of postpartum ovarian inactivity resulting in extended calving intervals and poor expression of estrus behavior (Singh J et al., 2000, Anim. Reprod. Sci. 60–61, 593–604). Buffaloes are seasonal breeders with the highest reproductive activities during winter (short day lengths) and a high frequency of anestrus during the summer months (Singh G et al. 1985, Ind. J. Anim. Res. 19, 57–60). Recent research demonstrated that a combination of progesterone, estradiol benzoate and equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) was effective for estrus induction and synchronization in buffalo heifers under Mediterranean conditions (Barile et al. 2001, Livestock Prod. Sci. 68, 283–287). The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of an estrus synchronization protocol on reproductive efficiency of water buffalo during out of the normal breeding season. A total of six heifers (21 to 23 months of age) and three cows (5, 6 and 18 years of age) were enrolled in an estrus synchronization protocol lasting for 12 days. All animals were kept under tropical conditions in the coastal part of Paraná (Antonina), about 450km south of São Paulo. The experiment was performed in December, 2002, during the Brazilian summer season, when reproductive efficiency of buffaloes is greatly reduced. On the first day of the protocol (Day 0), animals were implanted with an intravaginal device containing 1g of progesterone (DIB, Syntex SA, Buenos Aires, Argentina) and injected with 10mg estradiol benzoate (Estrogin, Famavet, São Paulo, Brazil). On Day 9, the DIB implant was removed and the animals received 150μg (i.m.) of cloprostenol (Prolise, Syntex SA, Buenos Aires, Argentina) and 2500 IU of eCG (Novormon, Syntex SA, Buenos Aires, Argentina). On Day 11, all animals received 1500 IU of hCG (Vetecor, Lab. Calier, Spain). Artificial insemination (AI) was performed on Day 12 using frozen-thawed semen from a bull of proven fertility. Only one AI was performed per heifer/cow. Pregnancies were determined by ultrasound examination at 53 days following AI and confirmed by rectal palpation at 90 days post AI. The use of this estrus synchronization protocol, followed by fixed-time insemination, resulted in four pregnant heifers (66%) and three pregnant cows (100%). Our results demonstrate that buffalo reproduction can be successful during out-of-breeding season when adequate hormonal treatment is used. Additional experiments should be done to validate the protocol.

With the goal of optimizing protocols, fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) was performed under field conditions in a study to evaluate conception rates in Girolando (5/8) heifers (18 to 24 months of age) treated with estradiol benzoate (BE) to induce ovulation. Forty heifers were allocated to 2 groups with 20 animals each: GI-sexed semen (2 million spermatozoa/dose) and GII-nonsexed semen (20 million spermatozoa/dose), with body condition score (BCS) of 3.0 ± 0.14 (scale of 1 to 5), middleweight of 335 ± 38 kg, so that it was made for reutilization of progesterone device. On Day 0 (morning), the animals received 2.0 mg of BE (RIC-BE®,Tecnopec, São Paulo, Brazil), 0.075 mg of D-cloprostenol (Prolise®, ARSA S.R.L., Buenos Aires, Argentina), and an intravaginal device of 1 g of progesterone (Primer®, Tecnopec). On Day 8 (morning) the device was removed and 0.075 mg of D-cloprostenol was managed in the GI animals, then these animals received 1.0 mg of BE 24 h after device removal. The insemination was in the late afternoon of Day 10 with a 6-hour delay (4 to 6 pm). The GII animals received Primer previously used for 8 days (being used in the GI animals under the same protocol). After pregnancy diagnosis at 60 days, a third group was created (GIII) using the not-pregnant animals of GI and GII. In GIII, Primer from third use [disinfected in solution Kilol®-L 1:250 (Quinabra, São Paulo, Brazil) and rinsed with water, dried, and packed in plastic sacks and kept for 60 days] was used following the GI protocol with sexed semen. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in the conception rates of 40, 58, and 65% among groups GI (8/20), GII (11/20), and GIII (13/20). These results indicate very good conception rates for heifers, contrary to recommendations of commercial companies of sexed semen that alert for the conception rate for mated animals to be lower when using FTAI and mating protocols in mass, compared with that of AI after estrus observation.

Progestagen-releasing devices are commonly used for fixed-time artificial insemination and fixed-time embryo transfer (FTET). The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a new progesterone-releasing intravaginal device made of poly(3-hydroxy)butyrate-valerate copolymer (PHB-V) and poly-ϵ-caprolactone (PCL; Progestar®, Innovare, São Paulo, Brazil) to synchronize crossbredcows and heifers for FTET by determining ovulation, conception, and pregnancy rates. A total of 205 recipients ranging in age from 2 to 8 years (heifers, n = 77; non-suckled cows, n = 69; suckled cows, n = 59) were used on 3 different farms during February, March, and April 2008. The experimental design was a generalized block design (cyclicity, body condition score, postpartum interval, and animal category, i.e. heifers, suckled, or non-suckled cows), with 2 different synchronization treatments for FTET (Progestar® v. Crestar®). Cows were assigned to either Crestar® (norgestomet ear implants; Intervet Schering-Plough, Kenilworth, NJ, USA; n = 103) or Progestar® (PHB-V; n = 102) treatments. All groups were treated with 2 mg of estradiol benzoate i.m. (Innovare) and received the intravaginal or auricular device according to their group (Day 0). Together with P4 device withdrawal (Day 8), all animals received 400 IU of eCG i.m. (Novormon®, Schering-Plough) and 500 μg i.m. of PGF2α, (Sincrocio®, Ouro Fino, Brasil). On Day 9, all cows were treated with 1 mg of estradiol benzoate (Innovare) and the innovulation was performed on Day 17. Embryos were maintained at 37°C during the innovulation period. The percentage of usable recipients (AR) based on the presence of a functional CL on the day of embryo transfer, conception rate (numbers of pregnant recipients of the total number transferred; CR), and pregnancy rate (numbers of pregnant recipients of the total number synchronized; PR) were determined by ultrasonography 23 days after embryo transfer. Data were submitted to ANOVA (PROC GLM, SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA) and significant differences were considered to have a P-value of <0.05. None of the interactions were significant and there was no effect of treatment on AR (72.8% v. 83.3%), CR (47.9% v. 42.7%), and PR (34.7% v. 35.0%) for Progestar® v. Crestar® groups, respectively. This experiment showed that Progestar® was as efficacious as Crestar® to synchronize crossbred cows and heifers for FTET. Fostering a strong export sector is essential for the kind of small, open economy like post-communist Czechoslovakia (latterly the Czech and Slovak Republics). The CSFR export sector has to a considerable extent the defied expectations, of many of the more pessimistic commentators in regard to the expansion of exports to the West, as many industries with a previously poor record on the EC market have attained very rapid growth rates of exports to that market. Nevertheless, the evidence of section 3 points to a weakening of the reorientation process in 1992, and raises questions about the future of many of the industries which formerly exported largely to the CMEA area. Whilst the overall level of exports has been largely maintained in the transition period, export growth to the West has not allowed most of the CMEA-oriented industries to maintain their shares in total exports.

AbstractThe aim was to examine statistically the changes among days in the numbers of follicles relative to the growth of large follicles to test the hypothesis that follicular development occurs in a wave-like fashion in anoestrous ewes. The relationships among the patterns of circulating concentrations of FSH, oestradiol and inhibin-A and the pattern of follicular growth as well as relationships among follicular fluid steroid and inhibin-A concentrations were also studied. The ovaries of 11 ewes were examined daily using transrectal ultrasonography for 14 days and blood samples were collected every 8 h for 9 days. Five ewes were ovariectomized on the last day of ultrasound scanning. One to three identified follicles (a cohort) emerged every 2 to 5 days (mean 2·9 (s.e. 0·2) days) in individual ewes. The numbers of 4 and 5 mm follicles were fewest (P < 0·05) before and greatest (P < 0·05) 1 day after cohort emergence. This change in the numbers of follicles indicates a wave-like pattern of follicular growth. FSH concentrations were greatest (P < 0·05) on the day before wave emergence and lowest (P < 0·05) on the day of wave emergence. Peripheral concentrations of oestradiol and inhibin-A did not fluctuate (P > 0·05) in association with the emergence of follicular waves. The follicles that were collected at ovariectomy originated from one of three different waves. Oestradiol and inhibin-A concentrations in follicular fluid and the oestradiol-to-progesterone ratio were not different among the largest follicles of successive waves, when follicles were collected at the same time, indicating that new waves of follicles developed before the demise of old waves.In conclusion, waves of follicles emerged about every 3 days in anoestrous ewes (defined as significant changes in numbers of follicles) and were associated with fluctuations in FSH concentrations but not peripheral oestradiol or inhibin-A concentrations. New follicular waves also emerged in the presence of steroidogenically active (positive oestradiol-to-progesterone ratio), inhibin-A producing follicles from a previous wave suggesting that follicles do not exert functional dominance during the non-breeding season.

SummaryAn intensive sheep production system using flocks of 100 Scottish Halfbred (SHB), 100 Welsh Speckleface (WSF) and 100 Finn Blackface (FBF) ewes maintained by 8, 4 and 6 ha grassland respectively for a 5-year period, was investigated to establish the consequences of high flock prolificacy and the measures taken to achieve it, including PMS administration. Mating occurred in late October/November at ewe: ram ratios of 25 or 33: 1. Ewes were housed in winter and fed silage, with supplementary cereals in late pregnancy. Lambs in excess of 2 (SHB) and 1 (WSF and FBF) per ewe were artificially reared and fattened indoors; ewes and lambs at grass were rotationally grazed (with forward creep grazing by the lambs). Prolificacy in the SHB breed was 225 lambs born per 100 ewes mated for untreated ewes and 237 for hormone-treated ewes; 119 and 155 respectively for WSF ewes; and 255 for FBF ewes (all untreated). Lambs sold per 100 ewes mated were: for SHB, 200 and 177; WSF, 102 and 107; FBF, 201.Good ewe condition and heavy live weights at mating were associated with appetite problems on silage in late pregnancy; PMS injection with a failure to secure conception rates above 80% at the critical oestrus and a markedly lower prolificacy for ewes conceiving at later oestruses; mating in the middle of the breeding season and March/April lambing with slow lamb growth rates on grass in July and August. Hormone-induced high prolificacy was associated with a greater proportion of large multiple litters than natural high prolificacy, and consequent smaller lamb birth weights and more perinatal mortality. There was a significant negative regression relating fleece weight with litter size. The results suggest the existence of an optimal level of prolificacy for the system employed.
