ABSTRACT This paper studies two aspects of the automobile insurance market in Brazil: first, it determines the degree of competition among insurance companies, and second, it estimates and analyzes the demand for automobile insurance. Most of the studies on the automobile insurance market in Brazil analyze the performance of the firms in this sector or present regional studies of the demand for insurance and its determinants. Thus, this study innovates both in showing the competition among the firms and estimating the demand for insurance in the country. The relevance of this research lies in the sequential and ordered way it analyzes the demand in a sector. Firstly, it identifies the type of competition that takes place in the sector and then, based on this, it proposes a structural framework based on optimizing decisions for estimating the price, income, and market power elasticities of demand. Furthermore, analyzing the insurance industry is of the utmost importance since it moves significant amounts of financial resources and provides an essential service in the economy. With information about the market structure and demand profile in the automobile insurance sector it is possible to propose strategic policies for individual firms as well as for the whole sector in order to introduce more efficiency. To analyze the degree of competitiveness, several concentration indices were calculated using annually-aggregated monthly data on the premium paid to all the automobile insurance firms in the period from 2001 to 2016. To estimate the demand for automobile insurance, half-yearly data from 2002 to 2010 for each one of the 27 federative units of Brazil were used. Two main findings are presented in this study. First, we find evidence of little concentration in the Brazilian automobile insurance market, with shares being well distributed among the players. Second, we estimate the demand for automobile insurance in Brazil and find a price-elasticity of -0.47 in the short run and -1.33 in the long run, while the lagged profitability has a negative impact on the amount insured: -0.21 in the short run and -0.59 in the long run. Income does not significantly influence the demand for insurance in Brazil.

The article analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world insurance market and some European countries. Separated economic indicators of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the insurance business of the world are singled out. It was determined that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic inspired declining incomes of insurers and households, rising unemployment, declining demand for insurance services, a significant decline in productivity of insurance companies, uncertainty about the future development of the insurance industry and the effects of the pandemic. The experience of the world insurers' struggle against the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic has been studied and generalized. The latest tools that have allowed insurers around the world to mitigate or mitigate the negative impact of the crown crisis, in particular, are: the development of new insurance products; increasing the level of requirements for insurance services in terms of its relevance, price flexibility, mobility and transparency; transition of insurers to online sales of insurance services and online payments for insurance cases; direct funding of specific means of combating COVID-19; use of the latest technologies and innovative methods in the insurance business; introduction of a new mode of staff work in the activities of insurance companies. The transition of insurers to online sales of insurance services and online payments has revealed many unresolved issues regarding the insurer's cybersecurity. Insurers are forced to improve existing technologies and methods of control, to intensify training and information activities. The Crown Crisis has significantly increased the importance of modern underwriting. Therefore, insurers around the world are using the capabilities of artificial intelligence, alternative data sources and better forecasting models. Greater understanding of pandemic processes, gaining experience is needed not only to accelerate the way out of the modern pandemic, but also to form a stable insurance system to the inevitable future challenges. The study of positive experience in the functioning and development of insurance markets around the world in crises and shocks is useful for application in national practice.

India is one among the most promising emerging insurance markets in the world. Indian insurance sector was liberalised in 2001. The insurance industry in India has undergone transformational changes over the last 15 years. In July 2014, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved 49% FDI in insurance from the previous level of 26%. This paper aimed at examining the impact of FDI on the performance of selected private sector insurance companies. The study is based on secondary data and it is a descriptive study. This paper found that FDI had a significant positive as well as negative impact on areas which were studied in the paper.

With the liberalization and entry of private companies in insurance, the Indian insurance sector has started showing signs of significant change. Within a short span of time, private insurance has acquired 13 per cent of the life insurance market and 14 per cent of non-life market. However, there is still a huge untapped demand for insurance. Insurance companies have a pivotal role in offering insurance products which meet the requirements of the people and, at the same time, are affordable. Some of the challenges faced by the insurance sector pertain to the demand conditions, competition in the sector, product innovations, delivery and distribution systems, use of technology, and regulation. To understand the growth and development and the future prospects of this sector, this colloquium addresses the following issues: What will be the demand for insurance? What types of innovative strategies of insurance education and awareness will we require to encourage the Indian consumers? With the changes following bank participation in insurance, will the nature of competition in this sector intensify? What kind of competitive and risk pressures will the insurance businesses experience? What are their implications for profitability, margins, and efficiency? The average size of the polices will continuously decline as the insurance companies increase the geographic coverage. As a result of this, the intermediation costs will go up. What are the implications of these on average costs? What will be the product market scenario? Has the insurance sector benefited from the knowledge base of global companies? To what extent have the technology gains in telecommunications, computer information, and data processing contributed to increased efficiency and productivity of insurance companies? The following key points emerged from the responses of the panelists: The future in life insurance will be determined by the increase in pure protection products, a refreshing look at unit-linked plans, launch of customized plans, and improved service levels. The insurance sector will grow steadily rather than rapidly. While the law and regulations are in place to ensure financial strength and solvency of insurers, the regulator's challenge lies in monitoring compliance. The opportunity for financial services is increasing all over the world. Big domestic companies with significant market shares in the local countries will have the opportunities to commence business in other markets. Keeping in mind the complexities of the industry, multi-product, multi-channel, and multisegment route needs to be followed for growth. The challenge of successfully implementing bancassurance lies in training the staff, integrating the insurance products, and ensuring best quality service. Agents in the insurance sector are critical for its success and, in order to gain competitive advantage, quality people are needed but attracting and retaining agents is a challenge.

Insurance has been an integral part of financial services system and recognised as a cornerstone of a country’s financial health and symbol of progress. Insurance provides for the financial security of citizens and their families. The present paper discusses the role of marketing in insurance distribution of life insurance sector in India as insurance offers a valuable investment advices and serves as an effective step towards both individual and national financial stability. The waves of globalisation have deeply influenced the insurance sector worldwide. Financial globalisation has been strongly supported by globalisation of insurance. With the increase in trade, direct investment and portfolio investment, there has been an ever growing demand for insurance services particularly in the emerging markets. Globalisation of insurance market, as a part of the overall process of liberalisation in emerging and other countries enabled the foreign insurance companies to enter in those countries and benefited both. Triggered by the sound fundamentals in global economy and internationalisation of world markets, several countries turned towards free market regimes in banking and insurance, putting an end to several decadeold state-owned controlled markets. There was a remarkable progress in the Indian insurance industry soon after the acceptance and adaptation of LPG in the year 1991. After 1991, the Indian life insurance industry has geared up in all respects, as well as it has been forced to face a lot of healthy competition from many national as well as international private insurance players. It is also reported by Swiss Re and Munich Re that there would be 20-25 percent growth in life and health insurance market by 2015, particularly in India and China. Purpose. Analysis of the state of the insurance services market of Ukraine, identification of the main problems of its development in modern conditions and determination of directions for improving the functioning of the insurance services market in Ukraine. Methodology of research. The scientific and methodological basis for the article are scientific works, monographs, materials of professional publications, Internet resources. During the research the methods of analysis and synthesis, system-functional method and method of comparative studies were used, with the help of which most modern tendencies, phenomena and processes in the market of insurance services are explained. Findings. The article is devoted to current trends of the insurance in Ukraine. The study examines the main trends in its development during 2016-2020. The dynamics of the number of insurance companies, the main indicators of insurers, the structure of gross and net insurance premiums of domestic insurers, reinsurance indicators are analyzed. Based on a dataset of Ukrainian insurance industry, we analyse the impact of transformation of the insurance sector. Based on the analysis, the main problems of the insurance services market of Ukraine are identified and proposals for improving its development are formulated. The results illustrate major tasks the industry is facing: enhancing the customer experience, improving its business processes, offering new products, and preparing for competition with other industries, imperfection of regulatory regulation of the insurance sector; underdevelopment of the life insurance segment and other types of insurance (agricultural, environmental, catastrophic risks and life insurance, cyber risks); low solvency of potential consumers of insurance services, low level of capitalization of insurance companies, lack of insurance culture, distrust of the insurance institution; fraud and neglect of the rights of policyholders by some insurance companies; low financial literacy of policyholders. Moreover, we identify key areas of change of the insurance services market of Ukraine: creation of a centralized online database of insurance contracts; improving the system of taxation of insurance activity; adaptation of Ukrainian legislation in the field of insurance to EU legislation; introduction of high technologies in insurance services; improvement of marketing management; creation of an export insurance system by establishing a special organization for export insurance and financing; introduction of insurance culture and traditions. Originality. A comprehensive approach to the analysis of the state of the insurance market as an important component of the financial sector of the economy with most of its inherent characteristics, functions and principles; economic space in which institutional units for the implementation of insurance services interact; a set of orderly cash flows between the subjects of the insurance market. Practical value. The results of the study can be the basis for further research to systematically address practical problems in this area, development and implementation of measures aimed to achieve accelerated progressive development of the insurance market to ensure socio-economic growth. The article analyses the evolution and current state of the insurance market of the Republic of Belarus. The content and structure of the insurance market are characterized. The role of infrastructure links in the development of the external environment of the Belarusian insurance market is shown. It determines the promising directions of integration into the international insurance market. The main approaches to the system of state regulation of the insurance market and its compliance with international standards are analysed. The systematization of legal acts regulating relations in the insurance sector is carried out. The requirements for the formation of the authorized capital and conditions for the transfer of risks to reinsurance are justified. The analysis of differences in the level of insurance development among individual insurance companies in the Republic of Belarus, the structure of insurance premiums and payments is carried out. It is shown that insurance development depends on the effectiveness of the national economy development. The factors influencing changes in key performance indicators of the insurance market are identified. The necessity of activation of integration processes in the insurance sector is proved. The issues of assessment and monitoring of decision implementation of the EEU bodies in the national insurance legislation of the Republic of Belarus and selected country members of the EEU are considered. The main recommendations on the formation of the functioning mechanism of the unified insurance environment on the territory of the EEU are given. Drivers of the Belarusian insurance market development are defined.The article will be of interest to specialists engaged in studying the issues of state regulation of insurance activities as well as to state supervisory authorities when developing a set of measures for the development of the common insurance environment of the EEU and developing a strategy for the insurance industry development for the upcoming five-year period.

The stage of political and economic instability in Ukraine significantly influence on development of both individual insurance companies and the insurance market as a whole. The decrease of the solvency level of the population and trust to insurers have led to a significant reduction in demand for insurance services in recent years. That is why today insurers has faced a difficult task to increase the range, volume and quality of insurance services, increase the level of capitalization and financial reliability of insurance companies, gaining trust of legal entities and individuals. Following these measures aimed at overcoming crisis trends, the local economy will be able to attract essential investment resources, strengthen the effectiveness of state supervision of insurance activities, create a structural basis for the development of various types of insurance. One of the important factors in activating the development of the insurance business can be an effectively built underwriting process of an individual insurance company. The application of such an approach will enable the profitability and financial stability of insurance companies due to a thorough analysis and selection of risks for acceptance into insurance. The article analyzes the current state of the insurance market in Ukraine and highlights its main prospects for development. The methodology of the study is to summarize and compare the data characterizing the various components of the insurance market. The authors identify the trends in the insurance market in Ukraine, assess the situation according to various criteria, identify factors in the development of the insurance business, as well as problematic aspects of the insurance industry. The study has showed that there is a high dependence of insurance in Ukraine on the current political and economic system, which led to the dominance of demand for certain insurance products. The development of the modern insurance market is associated with the need for state support, is to create conditions for adequate functioning of the insurance market.

We analyzed the efficiency of the insurance industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in the period from 2015 to 2019 in order to identify good and bad practices, sources of inefficiency and to propose guidelines for the necessary efficiency improvements based on the results. Efficiency measurement was performed using the nonparametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique as the most commonly used tool for efficiency analysis in finance. We used one output and two input variables according to the input-oriented approach assuming a variable return to scale (VRS). Empirical research was conducted on all insurance companies from BiH, which are grouped according to the size of assets, type of insurance, and headquarters in order to determine whether there are differences in the efficiency of insurance companies in terms of their size, type of insurance, or depending on whether it operates in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) or Republic of Srpska (RS). The results of the analysis indicate significant inefficiencies in the insurance sector in BiH, but also differences among the observed groups. The insurance sector is more efficient in FBiH compared to RS, and insurance companies in the composite insurance market are significantly more efficient than companies in the non-life insurance market. Finally, the research has showed a relatively high level of positive correlation between the size of an insurance company and its efficiency. According to all efficiency indicators, there is significant potential for efficiency improvement. Based on the analysis, the main causes of inefficiency were identified and guidelines for improving efficiency were proposed.
