RESUMO Foram analisadas amostras fecais de cães domiciliados provenientes de Guarulhos, SP, para se determinar a ocorrência de agentes parasitários de zoonoses. Das 166 amostras examinadas, 54 (32,53%) apresentaram-se positivas, com uma maior freqüência de Giardia duodenalis (13,25%), seguido de Ancylostoma spp. (10,84%), Dipylidium caninum (2,41%) e Toxocara canis (1,81%).

Abstract Considering the close contact of companion animals and humans, gastrointestinal parasitic zoonoses are very widespread and represent a high risk of transmission with the potential of severe consequences affecting the digestive tract of both humans and other animals. In this study we focused on enteric zoonoses caused by Toxocara canis nematode, Dipylidium caninum tapeworm and Giardia duodenalis protozoa. Our primary aim was to observe Toxocara canis egg excretion within the 27 consecutive days before and after orally treatment (2 Caniverm® tablets) on Day 13 in a naturally infected puppy. An average egg per gram (EPG) of T. canis detected by coprological quantitative McMaster method was 4558.33 and 666.66, before and after treatment, respectively. The percentage of faecal egg count reduction (%FECR) in in vivo Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT) has confirmed an 85.37 % efficacy against T. canis. Secondly, the efficacy of Caniverm® against the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum was also determined. No D. caninum proglottides were detected on Day 14. The data showed 100 % effectiveness of the anthelmintic treatment. Metrobactin® 250 mg has been tested as experimental therapy against Giardia duodenalis on Day 3. On day 10, no cysts were observed in the faeces after per os ¼ tablet administration twice a day for 7 days.

In Dnipropetrovsk sity (Ukraine, Dnipropetrovsk region) in carnivorous animals 10 species of parasites (helminths and coccidia) were found: Uncinaria sp., Ancylostoma sp., Dictyocaulus immitis (Nematoda, Strongylata), Strongyloides stercoralis (Nematoda, Rhabditata), Spirocerca lupi (Nematoda, Spirurata), Toxocara canis (Nematoda, Ascaridata), Trichuris vulpis (Nematoda, Trichurata), Dipylidium caninum (Cestoda, Hymenolepidata), Cystoisospora sp. and Toxoplasma gondii (Sporozoa, Coccidia). In soil S. stercoralisand Uncinaria sp. weredominanted. In most carnivorous animals registered in L. Globa park and T. Shevchenko park the S. stercoralisand Uncinaria sp., Cystoisosporasp. and T. gondii were found.

AbstractIn a survey carried out during the period May 1995 to November 1996, in communities of various ethnic groups in northern Israel, 206 dogs were examined for Echinococcus granulosus and other intestinal helminth parasites by arecoline hydrobromide purges and the coproantigen-ELISA. The arecoline test was performed close to the owners' homes, using plastic sheets secured to the ground. From 56 dogs examined in the Muslim town of Tamra, six (10.7%) were found to be infected with E. granulosus. Four of them also had a mixed infection of Taenia hydatigena and Dipylidium caninum (two dogs), and the remaining two dogs were infected with either D. caninum or Taenia pisiformis. An additional 18 dogs were infected with either T. pisiformis (eight dogs), D. caninum (seven dogs), or T. hydatigena (three dogs). Two of these dogs harboured mixed infections whereas the remaining 32 dogs were free of helminths. In the Jewish villages, none of the 150 dogs examined were infected with E. granulosus, although 26 (17.3%) were infected with D. caninum, four (2.7%) with Ancylostoma spp. and one (0.7%) with Toxocara canis. Only one of the 22 stray dogs and none of the 15 jackals examined were infected with E. granulosus. However, 21 (95.4%) of the dogs and 12 (80%) of the jackals harboured helminth infections, including: D. caninum (16 dogs and seven jackals), Ancylostoma spp. (five jackals), T. hydatigena (three dogs), and T. canis (one dog). Approximately 18% of the dogs and 33% of the jackals showed mixed infections with two or more of the above helminths. In the abattoirs, 52 (5.9%) of the 874 sheep and 33 (5.3%) of the 616 goats from 17 herds slaughtered in the Muslim and Druze villages were found to be infected with E. granulosus, compared with a 0% infection rate observed in 93 sheep from two herds in Jewish villages.

Objetivo. Estimar la prevalencia de parásitos potencialmente zoonóticos en heces caninas de Puerto Escondido. Material y métodos. La ciudad se dividió en diez zonas de estudio y éstas se categorizaron en hábitats natural, urbano y suburbano. Se colectaron muestras fecales caninas del piso. Se recuperaron los parásitos por medio de técnicas coproparasitológicas de flotación y frotis directo para su observación microscópica y posterior identificación. Se estimó la prevalencia parasitaria en las heces caninas. Resultados. Todas las zonas presentaron fecalismo canino. La prevalencia parasitaria fue de 73.33%. Los parásitos con mayor prevalencia fueron Toxocara canis (47.78%), Ancylostoma caninum (17.88%) y Dipylidium caninum (13.89%). Conclusión. El fecalismo canino proviene de perros errantes y con dueño. Del total de parásitos encontrados, 66.66% son zoonóticos. Los factores que favorecen la problemática son el hábitat suburbano, el manejo indeseable de la basura y la tenencia irresponsable de los cánidos.

Objetivo: Avaliar a presença de parasitos em amostras de fezes e de solo colhidas em diferentes áreas no Município de Ituiutaba-MG. Metodologia: Foram visitadas 17 praças e coletadas um total de 85 amostras de fezes, analisadas pelas técnicas parasitológicas de flutuação, formol-éter e sedimentação espontânea. As amostras de solo foram colhidas em 20 locais entre praças e clubes, sendo cinco amostras em cada local. As amostras foram acondicionadas em sacos formando um “pool do local”, e identificadas com data e temperatura do solo e encaminhadas para análise parasitológica. Resultados: Do total de amostras de fezes coletadas 23,5% (20/85) estavam positivas, sendo 68% (15/20) apresentaram formas evolutivas de Ancylostoma spp e 9% das amostras (2/20) continham ovos de Dipylidium caninum e/ou de Toxocara spp. Quanto à presença de protozoários, 9% (2/20) das amostras tinham cistos e/ou trofozoíto de Giardia duodenalis e 4,5% (1/20) apresentaram oocistos de coccídeos. Do total de amostras de solo coletadas, 70% (14/20) dos locais positivaram para formas parasitárias de helmintos, sendo que 78,5% (11/14) apresentaram formas evolutivas de Ancylostoma spp , 64,3% (9/14) de Toxocara spp.,  14,3% (2/14)  Strongyloides stercolaris, 7,2% (1/14) D. caninum ou  Hymenolepis nana ou Spirometra mansonoides. Conclusão: O encontro de formas parasitárias nestes locais destaca a necessidade de ações de promoção em saúde, colocando em prática o conceito de saúde única.

Une étude parasitologique a été menée en 2015 sur des chiens de sexe, âge et race différents, vivant en liberté dans la ville de Lubumbashi, République démocratique du Congo. Des échantillons de fèces ont été prélevés et analysés par coproscopie selon une méthode de flottation. Sur les 120 chiens examinés, 78 (65 %) étaient infestés, parmi lesquels 74 (61,7 %) avaient des helminthes gastro-intestinaux et 4 (3,3 %) avaient des coccidies. Les coproscopies ont révélé la présence de cinq espèces de parasites : Ankylostoma spp. (41 chiens), Toxocara canis (22), Toxascaris leonina (8), Isospora canis (4) et Dipylidium caninum (3). I. canis n’a été retrouvé que chez les chiots. Le dépistage fréquent d’ankylostomes et de T. canis suggère qu’il existe à Lubumbashi un risque de contamination de l’homme par ces parasites zoonotiques.

O estudo das parasitoses intestinais que ocorrem em cães nas áreas rurais do Brasil assume grande importância ante a escassez de trabalhos sobre este assunto. Foram coletadas amostras fecais de cães encontradas no solo de propriedades rurais de alguns municípios da região meio oeste do estado de Santa Catarina. No laboratório, as amostras foram processadas e analisadas pelo método de Hoffman e por centrífugo-flutuação em solução de sacarose. Verificou-se a presença de pelo menos um parasito em 56,0% das amostras. Os seguintes parasitos foram encontrados: Ancylostoma sp., Toxocara canis, Trichuris vulpis, Dipylidium caninum, Giardia sp., Cryptosporidium sp. and Taenia sp. / Echinococcus sp. Estes resultados indicam um nível elevado de contaminação do ambiente rural por parasitos de cães; por conseguinte, os níveis de infecção de cães na área estudada foram também elevados. O quadro sugere a necessidade da adoção de medidas eficazes de saúde pública e remete à discussão das possíveis implicações de tais resultados.

Intestinal parasites of dogs represent a serious threat to human health due to their zoonotic potential. Thus, metropolitan areas presenting high concentrations of pets and urban fecal contamination on public areas are at sanitary risk. Major aim of this survey was to determine prevalence of zoonotic parasites in dog fecal samples collected from public soil of Milan (north-western Italy). Differences in parasites prevalence distribution were explored by a geographical information system- (GIS-) based approach, and risk factors (human density, sizes of green parks, and dog areas) were considered. The metropolitan area was divided into 157 rectangular subareas and sampling was performed following a 1-kilometer straight transect. A total of 463 fecal samples were analyzed using centrifugation-flotation technique and ELISA to detectGiardiaandCryptosporidiumcoproantigens. A widespread fecal contamination of soil was highlighted, being fecal samples found in 86.8% of the subareas considered. The overall prevalence of intestinal parasites was 16.63%. Zoonotic parasites were found, such asTrichuris vulpis(3.67%),Toxocara canis(1.72%),Strongyloides stercoralis(0.86%), Ancylostomatidae (0.43%), andDipylidium caninum(0.43%).Giardia duodenaliswas the most prevalent zoonotic protozoa (11.06%), followed byCryptosporidium(1.10%). Faeces from subareas characterized by broad green areas showed to be particularly prone to infection.

Animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) are based on the establishment of a therapeutic relationship between animals and beneficiaries that is certain to provide positive effects, while currently, it reads as if AAIs aim at exposing stakeholders to potential risk of infection. The surveillance of zoonotic pathogens is necessary for guaranteeing common health. This study investigated the presence of potentially zoonotic parasites, including dermatophytes, in animals involved in AAIs. Between 2015 and 2017, 190 animals (equids, dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, rodents, and goats) were investigated. Anamnestic and management data were recorded. Individual faecal samples were analysed using a copromicroscopic procedure. Fur and skin were examined for ectoparasites during clinical examinations, and samples for mycological investigation were collected by brushing. Parasites were described in 60 (31.6%) investigated animals. Thirteen out of the 60 (21.7%) animals harboured potentially zoonotic parasites, mainly recovered in dogs (Ancylostomatidae, Eucoleus aerophilus, Toxocara canis, and Giardia duodenalis) and a cat (G. duodenalis). Nannizzia gypsea and Paraphyton mirabile, potential agents of cutaneous mycosis, were isolated in a dog and a horse, respectively. No ectoparasites were found. AAIs might represent a source of infections either directly or via environmental contamination. Thus, active surveillance is necessary and animal screenings should be planned and scheduled according to the risk of exposure.

To identify areas of risk for canine-related zoonoses in Serbia, the aim of this study was to provide baseline knowledge about intestinal parasites in 151 dogs (65 household pets, 75 stray and 11 military working dogs) from Belgrade. The following parasites, with their respective prevalences, were detected: Giardia duodenalis (14.6%), Ancylostomatidae (24.5%), Toxocara canis (30.5%), Trichuris vulpis (47.0%) and Taenia -type helminths (6.6%). Of all examined dogs, 75.5% (114/151) were found to harbour at least one parasite species. Of these, mixed infections with up to four species per dog occurred in 44.7% (51/114). Infections with all detected species were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in military working (100%) and stray dogs (93.3%) versus household pets (50.8%). Among all parasites, agents with zoonotic potential including Giardia , Ancylostomatidae and Toxocara were detected in 58.3% (88/151) of all examined dogs with a significant difference (p < 0.05) among the subgroups (100%, 62.7% and 46.2% for military working dogs, stray dogs and household pets, respectively). The high prevalence of zoonotic parasites registered in the dog population from a highly urban area in south-eastern Europe indicates a potential risk to human health. Thus, veterinarians should play an important role in helping to prevent or minimise zoonotic transmission.
