ABSTRACT Objective: This research study aimed to evaluate the oral health status and the need for dental treatment in hospitalized patients, analyzing the importance of dentistry in hospitals. Therefore, the goal of this research study was to evaluate the oral health status, the need for dental intervention and the patient’s opinion about the importance of having dental surgeons in hospital settings. Methods: 103 hospitalized patients were evaluated considering the DMFT index, gingival condition, visible biofilm index, and the need for invasive dental treatment. Volunteers were also asked about their opinion considering the importance of dentistry in hospital settings. Results: 68.9% of volunteers were male subjects and 31.1% female subjects. The mean DMFT was 17.9 and 96.1% of subjects had their oral hygiene kit with when came to hospital, 97.1% of subjects stated that the presence of dental surgeons is necessary in the hospital setting and 63.1% of subjects presented poor biofilm removal. The need for invasive dental treatment was as follows: restorations (68.9%), extractions (40.8%), endodontics (23.3%), dental pain (26.2%) and presence of abscess (7,8%). Conclusion: Oral health and hygiene status of patients were classified as poor and most of patients showed the need for invasive dental treatment. The majority of patients reported that dental care is very important in hospitals settings.

Abstract Purpose To assess maternal knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of Early Childhood Caries (ECC) risk factors and to determine barriers in seeking dental treatment among children with ECC. Methods A total of 600 mothers of healthy children, aged 3–5 years, with ECC attending maternity and child health centres in Jordan completed a questionnaire using face-to-face interviews. ECC was diagnosed clinically by the chief investigator, based on the diagnostic criteria suggested by American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (AAPD), and caries was recorded using dmft index. Results The majority of the children had poor oral health status (99.2%) with a dmft index of 6.04 (± 1.2). Less than third (25.7%) of the mothers believed that their child had poor oral health with more than half (53.3%) not being aware that their child had dental caries. Most of the mothers had poor knowledge, attitudes and beliefs regarding their children’s oral health (82%). Participants` oral health knowledge was significantly associated with mothers` level of education and profession (p < 0.05). In addition, there was delay in seeking dental treatment for their children by the majority (65.9%) of mothers. Maternal profession, family income and time needed to reach a nearby health centre were found to be significant barriers in seeking dental treatment (p < 0.05). Conclusion The majority of the mothers of children in Jordan with ECC had poor knowledge about their children’s oral health status. Moreover, seeking dental treatment was delayed by a large number of mothers of children with ECC.

Objectives This study investigated the accuracy and duration of intraoral digital photograph examination (IDPE) for evaluating oral health status and explored the feasibility of remote oral health assessment. Methods Thirty-one healthy college students underwent evaluations of oral health status via clinical examination (CE) combined with panoramic X-ray assessment at baseline, followed by IDPE 1 month later using photos taken at baseline. Methods for evaluation of gingival health included the Modified Gingival Index (MGI) and Plaque Index (PI). Examinations of caries status included the decayed, missing, and filled teeth and surfaces indexes (DMFT and DMFS indexes, respectively). The duration of each evaluation was also recorded. Results There were significant differences in MGI and PI between CE and IDPE. There were no significant differences in DMFT and DMFS indexes between CE and IDPE, and there were positive correlations between CE and IDPE for each of the two indexes (DMFT index: r=0.56; DMFS index: r=0.69). The IDPE duration was shorter than the CE duration. Conclusions The feasibility of caries status assessment via IDPE is promising. Digital oral health evaluation merits further clinical consideration. Autism is one of the most severe childhood neuropsychiatric disorders. Autistic individuals are characterized by impairment in social interaction with a restricted range of interests and often, stereotyped repetitive behaviors. Studies on oral health conditions in children with autism are sparse. The complicated disability itself makes clinical research difficult. Aim: The need for baseline information regarding the oral health status of children with autism is essential. Method: The present study assessed the oral health status of 106 autistic children aged 4 to 15 years in Bangalore city, India. The dental caries was recorded according to the WHO criteria; oral hygiene was assessed using the Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S) and its modification for deciduous dentition. The behavior of children towards dental treatment was also assessed using the Frankel's behavior rating scale. Data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis. Results showed that caries experience among autistic children was lower; however they were found to have more debris and calculus deposits. Conclusions: Negative behavior towards dental treatment was seen in autistic children.

Objectives: To assess oral health status and practices of 5- and 12-year-old Tribal school children.Methods: A total of 418, 5-year-old children and 327, 12-year-old children were enrolled. Information on demographic characteristics of participants along with oral health behavior was collected. Clinical data were collected on dental fluorosis, periodontal status, dental caries and treatment needs. Dean's index criterion was used to assess dental fluorosis. Community Periodontal Index (CPI) for periodontal conditions and Dentition status and treatment needs for dental caries were recorded. Results: Between meal sugar consumption was high (100%). None of the children in both the age groups had visited trained health personnel for dental treatment. Dental fluorosis prevalence in 5- and 12-year olds was 11.9% and 22.9% respectively. Bleeding on probing and calculus was common between both the age groups. A low mean number of healthy sextants were found and this decreased with age. Mean dmft/DMFT values for 5- and 12-year olds were 4.13 ± 3.90 and 1.15 ± 1.62. Significant caries index (SIC) scores for 5- and 12-year olds were 7.17 ±4.30 and 3.78 ± 3.21 respectively. Conclusion: The present study reveals high sugar consumption, dental fluorosis, poor oral hygiene, and untreated dental disease of tribal children. Under these circumstances, the implementation of preventive programs including restriction of sweets in school premises for the tribal children is the key to good oral health.

Good oral care and adapting to proper tooth brushing technique can be a difficult task for the visually impaired individuals. Unlike the normal individuals, visually impaired ones cannot suspect the early dental problem in their oral cavity till it is symptomatic simply because they cannot visualize the intricacies of it. Hence, assessment of the oral health status in the visually impaired individuals and teaching them preventive oral care are extremely important for them. Objective: The study was undertaken to compare and assess the oral health status of the visually impaired students before and after giving them oral care instructions. Materials and Methods: A group of 120 visually impaired students was selected. They were subjected to simple dental examination and were given oral care instructions verbally. Proper tooth-brushing technique was taught to them individually. The subjects were evaluated as per the need of dental restorations, extractions, orthodontic treatment, oral prophylaxis and good dentition subjects needing no dental treatment. The same subjects were re-evaluated after four months under similar guidelines. The data collected from both the phases of dental examination was compared and subjected to analysis. Results: The present study did not show much of improvement of statistical significance though it did not show much of worsening in the oral health status of the visually impaired subjects as well. Summary and conclusion: The study emphasizes the serious need for repetitive and collective efforts with multi-dimensional cross-involvement for the better oral health status of the visually impaired individuals in the society. Background: The Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) is a valuable index used for determining and monitoring the oral health status in a community. This study aimed to determine the oral health status and its associated factors based on the DMFT index among people aged 15 to 45 yr old in Kurdistan Province, west of Iran. Methods: This study was conducted on 2000 people aged 15-40 yr old in Kurdistan, western Iran in 2015. Using a questionnaire, data were collected by four trained dental students. The dependent variable was the DMFT index. The collected data were analyzed using T-test, ANOVA, Pearson statistics, Kendall statistics, and multiple regression. Results: The mean (SD) values of Decayed teeth (DT), Missing teeth (MT), and Filled teeth (FT) indices in the participants were 2.85±1.7, 1.15±1.84, and 3.33±1.7, respectively. The mean (SD) value of total DMFT index was 7.33±3.0. The results of multiple regression showed that the frequency of using dental floss (coefficient= - 0.296, P=0.001), socio-economic status (coefficient=-0.199, P=0.001), parental education (coefficient= -0.183, P=0.001), frequency of brushing (coefficient=-0.182, P=0.001), and frequency of the use of mouthwash (coefficient=-0/143, P=0.001) had the highest level of with association with the DMFT index. Conclusion: The oral health status of the adult population is alarming and undesirable. The oral and dental health status can be improved via changing behavioral habits (such as brushing, using mouthwashes, and dental floss), promoting socioeconomic status, increasing individual’s and parent's level of education, and enhancing people’s access to health insurance.

ABSTRACT Introduction Leukemia is a malignancy of the bone marrow and constitutes 30% of all childhood cancers. The leukemic condition itself and its therapy cause oral signs and symptoms with significant morbidity. Aims and objectives The aim of this study was to review the oral health status in children with leukemia and relate the gingival and periodontal findings to the changes in their hematological values. Materials and method The oral health status in 47 pediatric leukemic patients in the age group of 6 to 14 years was assessed using the dmft/DMFT index, OHI(S) index and modified gingival index (MGI). Their hematological reports on the day of examination were obtained. The patients were divided into three groups based on the status of treatment. The relation between the platelet count and the WBC count with the MGI score was checked. Results The highest dmf and DMF scores were seen in patients who were currently under treatment. Though an inverse relation was seen between the platelet count and the MGI score, a statistically significant value was not obtained. Conclusion A longitudinal follow-up of patients should be carried out in order to establish a relation between the hematological parameters and the gingival inflammation score.
