ABSTRACT In regions with limited water resources, efficient use of water has become increasingly essential for agricultural production. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the use of the carnauba palm bagana (leaf fibers) as an option of ground cover to reduce the use of water in irrigated radish. The study was conducted from July to October 2018 in two crop cycles in Pentecoste-CE, Brazil. The experiment was carried out in randomized blocks with split plots and four replicates, whose primary treatments consisted of five irrigation depths (50%; 75%; 100%; 125% and 150% of the evapotranspiration crop) and secondary treatments consisted of five different levels of ground cover using carnauba bagana (0%; 25%; 50%; 75% and 100% of 16 t ha-1), in a 5 x 5 interaction, totaling 100 experimental plots. The following variables were evaluated: fresh mass of shoots and tuber, plant height, number of leaves, tuber diameter and gas exchange. For tuber fresh mass in the first crop cycle, a first order model was obtained with the response surface, with linear increase of the factors irrigation depths (0.064 g plant-1) and ground cover (0.065 g plant-1), with the highest value (40.44 g plant-1) observed for the level of 150% ETcloc and 100% bagana. Application of 16 t ha-1 of carnauba bagana can be considered recommended, within the limits studied, for use in the radish crop.

Cassava plays a fundamental role in food, economy, culture and in Brazilian society. Because it is a rustic crop, tolerant to drought and acidic soils, with high adaptive capacity and low production cost, it has become the main source of carbohydrate in much of the world. Due to this and other factors, the presumed work aims to evaluate four cassava genotypes, transplanted in two different densities with the use of a biostimulant for root growth. The present study was carried out in the experimental area of Regional University of Northwest Rio Grande do Sul, in the county of Augusto Pestana – RS, Brazil. The treatments consisted of three cassava cultivars, FEPAGRO-RS 13 Vassourinha, BRS CS01, Iapar - 19 Pioneira with two planting densities, 10 and 20 buds per linear meter, with and without the use of plant biostimulator Sturdy®. The evaluations were carried out throughout the crop cycle, post-harvest and processing. Where the following variables were evaluated: plants emerged at 30, 60 and 90 days, plants that tuberized, starch, plant height, stem diameter, total root length, lignified part of the root, commercial root length, mean root diameter, number of leaves, branching of the stems, roots that tuberized and not tuberized, mass of tuberized roots, fresh mass of commercial tuber with peel, fresh mass of commercial tuber without peel, mass of partially dry peeled tuber. Regarding the density, the one that showed a better performance in the productive character was the density 10 buds per linear meter, which presented the highest averages of the commercial fresh mass without peel. Taking into account the cultivars, the one with the highest fresh mass production was BRS CS01 and Iapar-19 Pioneira. However, FEPAGRO-RS 13 Vassourinha presented a higher percentage of starch. The application of the biostimulant of root growth showed significant effect mainly for the characteristics of productivity. The increase in the number of branches decreases the final productivity of the crop. Another point to consider, the larger the average root diameter, the greater the percentage of starch in the root. By the method of Annicchiarico it can be pointed out that in general the percentage of starch and the dry matter of the roots had a better behavior in density 10 with biostimulant and density 20 with biostimulant.

Increasingly, those who work in the field of drinking water have demonstrated an interest in developing models for evolution of water quality from the treatment plant to the consumer's tap. To date, most of the modelling efforts have been focused on residual chlorine as a key parameter of quality within distribution systems. This paper presents the application of a conventional approach, the first order model, and the application of an emergent modelling approach, an artificial neural network (ANN) model, to simulate residual chlorine in a Severn Trent Water Ltd (U.K.) distribution system. The application of the first order model depends on the adequate estimation of the chlorine decay coefficient and the travel time within the system. The success of an ANN model depends on the use of representative data about factors which affect chlorine evolution in the system. Results demonstrate that ANN has a promising capacity for learning the dynamics of chlorine decay. The development of an ANN appears to be justifiable for disinfection control purposes, in cases when parameter estimation within the first order model is imprecise or difficult to obtain.

The nonlinear response of an electrostatically actuated cantilever beam microresonator sensor for mass detection is investigated. The excitation is near the natural frequency. A first order fringe correction of the electrostatic force, viscous damping, and Casimir effect are included in the model. The dynamics of the resonator is investigated using the Reduced Order Model (ROM) method, based on Galerkin procedure. Steady-state motions are found. Numerical results for uniform microresonators with mass deposition and without are reported.

Abstract Target manoeuvre is one of the key factors affecting guidance accuracy. To intercept highly maneuverable targets, a second-order sliding-mode guidance law, which is based on the super-twisting algorithm, is designed without depending on any information about the target motion. In the designed guidance system, the target estimator plays an essential role. Besides the existing higher-order sliding-mode observer (HOSMO), a first-order linear observer (FOLO) is also proposed to estimate the target manoeuvre, and this is the major contribution of this paper. The closed-loop guidance system can be guaranteed to be uniformly ultimately bounded (UUB) in the presence of the FOLO. The comparative simulations are carried out to investigate the overall performance resulting from these two categories of observers. The results show that the guidance law with the proposed linear observer can achieve better comprehensive criteria for the amplitude of normalised acceleration and elevator deflection requirements. The reasons for the different levels of performance of these two observer-based methods are thoroughly investigated.

SUMMARY This study aimed to evaluate biometric viscera and blood parameters of quails at 14 and 35 days of age, supplemented with different levels of inorganic selenium and vitamin E. A completely randomized design was used in a 4×4 factorial scheme (inorganic Se = 0.1125, 0.2250, 0.3375 and 0.4500 mg/kg diet x VE = 10, 23, 36 and 49 IU/kg feed). In the 0-14 days experiment, 2,400 newborn quail were used, distributed in 16 treatments and three replications of 50 birds each. In the 14-35 days experiment, 1,680 14 day-old quails were used with same treatments and three replicates of 35 birds each. At 14 days, the relative spleen weights (P=0.0203) increased linearly as a function of the VE level, while at 35 days, the relative weight of the bursa (P=0.0390) increased linearly as a function of Se concentration. At 14 days, there was a vitamin x mineral interaction (p=0.0097) affecting total cholesterol (TC), and a quadratic effect (P = 0.0138) related to Se and linear reduction levels (P=0.0275) as a function of VE. At 35 days, the TC concentrations (P=0.0055) and triglycerides (TG, P = 0.0220) showed a quadratic effect for Se. The linear increase in spleen weight and bursa after 14 and 35 days respectively suggests an improved immune response as a function of VE and Se supplementation. To achieve the lowest concentration of TC and TG at 35 days of age, supplementation of 0.26 and 0.29 mg/Se/kg/feed, respectively, is recommended.
