The objective was to evaluate the qualitative and nutritional aspects of elephant grass cv. BRS capiaçu silage with increasing proportions of silk cotton. A completely randomized design was used with five (0, 15, 30, 45, and 60% on natural matter basis) different inclusion proportions of silk cotton to elephant grass silage and four repetitions. Silages were prepared in PVC minisilos and remained ensiled for 42 days. The inclusion of silk cotton resulted in a linear reduction in dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), cellulose, and indigestible neutral detergent fiber (iNDF) contents at 0.06, 0.30, 0.23, 0.20, and 0.09 percentage points for each 1% inclusion, respectively. There was an increasing linear effect of crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN), with an increase of 39.32 and 20.89% from the lowest to the highest inclusion of silk cotton to elephant grass cv. BRS capiaçu silage. Values of pH, gas losses (GL), effluent losses (EL), dry matter recovery (DMR), hemicellulose, and lignin were not influenced by the evaluated inclusion levels, showing estimated averages of 3.87, 1, 42%, 11.55kg t-1 natural matter, 97.36%, 19.30%, and 7.20%, respectively. An increasing linear effect was found for fraction a, c, effective degradability (ED) (2% and 5%) dry matter, with an increment of 0.05, 0.0005, and 0.11 percent points, respectively. There was a quadratic effect for fraction b, potential degradability (PD), ED (2%), with minimum points of 23.72%, 50.52%, (at 45% inclusion level) 39.69%, (at 15% inclusion level) respectively. The indigestible fraction (IF) had a quadratic effect with a maximum of 49.48% at the 45% inclusion level. The colonization time (CT) linearly reduced by 0.09 percentage points for each 1% inclusion evaluated. According to the parameters evaluated, the inclusion of up to 60% silk cotton improved nutritional aspects and nutritional value of elephant grass cv. BRS capiaçu silage.

The present study aimed at determining the optimal conditions for extraction of total phenolic compounds from soybean (Glycine max) meal, a by-product of the soybean seeds industry, using a green protocol with microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). A face-centered composite design (FCCD) was used for optimization. Based on a screening aimed to determine the factors that significantly influenced the responses, a 50% hydro-ethanolic solution was used with solvent/dry matter ratio (60/1–110/1), power (120–270 W), and time (0–10 min) as factors, while the responses studied were total phenolic and flavonoid contents. FTIR, TLC, DPPH, and FRAP anti-oxidants tests were used to characterize the extracts obtained with optimum conditions. The factors that significantly influenced both responses were the individual effect of all factors, the interaction between solvent/dry matter ratio and extraction time, the quadratic effect of solvent/dry matter ratio, and power for total phenolic content, while only the quadratic effect of power significantly influenced the flavonoid content. The highest contents of phenols (13.09 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (7.39 mg CE/g) were obtained at 120 W for 0.16 min with a solvent/dry matter ratio of 60/1. ATR-FTIR spectra indicated the presence of polyphenolic compounds in the extract, namely flavonoids. TLC indicated the presence of at least nine compounds in the extract, among which catechin and quercetin were identified with respective Rf of 0.98 and 0.93. DPPH assay showed the anti-oxidant capacity for the extract with an IC50 of 194.98 µg/ml. RSM permitted us to develop a green protocol for maximum extraction of polyphenols from soybean seeds waste using less solvent, low power, and a reduced time in MAE.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different non-fibrous carbohydrate (NFC):neutral detergent fiber (NDF) ratios (0.70:1, 0.90:1, 1.14:1, 1.42:1, and 1.85:1) in diets containing cactus cladodes on intake, digestibility, ruminal parameters, ingestive behavior, and microbial protein of growing heifers. Five rumen-cannulated heifers (194 ± 70 kg of body weight) were distributed in a Latin square design (5 x 5). There was a quadratic effect on the intake of dry matter (DM) (Kg day-1 and %BW) and crude protein (CP) with the increase in non-fibrous carbohydrate (NFC): neutral detergent fiber (NDF) ratio, with maximum values of 7.07 kg day-1, 2.86%, and 0.949 kg day-1, estimated for 1.37:1, 1.39:1, and 1.27:1 ratios. When the intake of NDF decreased, in turn, the intakes of NFC and TDN increased. The NDF digestibility decreased with increasing NFC levels in diets. The other nutrients were not influenced. The ruminal pH showed the lowest values at 4 hours after feeding, mainly for animals fed the 1.85:1 ratio. There was a quadratic effect for rumination time with maximum values estimated for an NFC:NDF ratio of 0.88:1. The time spent idle increased linearly, while total chewing time and feeding efficiency of NDF decreased. The urinary volume increased linearly. However, microbial protein synthesis and the efficiency of the synthesis were not influenced. The number of protozoa increased by 64.5% with the elevation of the NFC:NDF ratio. We recommend a NFC:NDF ratio of 1.37:1 in diets containing cactus cladodes, to improve the use of nutrients, without negatively affecting ruminal parameters.

The objective was to evaluate the effect of increasing the dietary inclusion of spineless cactus (Nopalea cochenillifera Salm Dyck) on the carcass characteristics and meat quality of confined lambs. Thirty-two male Santa Inês lambs with an average age of 140 days and an initial body weight of 20.4 ± 2.60 kg were used in this study. The lambs were housed in individual stalls for 70 days and individually fed a ration with spineless cactus included at 0, 241, 519, or 753 g/kg of dry matter (DM). The lambs were slaughtered, and characteristics of the carcass and meat were recorded and analysed. Inclusion of spineless cactus had a quadratic effect on the bodyweight at slaughter and on the empty bodyweight of the lambs. The inclusion of 500 g/kg of spineless cactus provided the highest predicted cold carcass weight (16.03 kg). There was a quadratic effect of the inclusion of spineless cactus on the weight of meat cuts and leg composition of lambs. The inclusion of spineless cactus did not influence pH, tenderness, and water-retention capacity of the meat. However, the intramuscular fat content increased 1 mg for every 10 g/kg inclusion of spineless cactus in the diet. Quadratic effects were observed of the inclusion of spineless cactus on the weights of the liver, heart, rumen, blood, skin and internal fat of the lambs. Up to 500 g/kg of spineless cactus could be included in the diet of confined lambs.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of different row spacings and planting populations on dry matter yield, nutritive value, and predicted milk yield of BRS 658 forage sorghum hybrid growing in Brazilian conditions. A late relative maturity forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench; 110 d-115d to soft dough stage; BRS 658 – Embrapa] was planted at 3 row spacing (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 m) and at 3 planting population (50 x 103, 100 x 103, and 150 x 103 plants.ha-1). Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design in a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement, using 4 replicate plots per row spacing x plant population combination. At harvest, weights of whole-plant sorghum forage were obtained to calculate DM yields. Chemical composition was assessed by performing wet chemistry analysis. Plant height, stem diameter, and harvest were performed 110 days after sowing (DAS). Estimated milk yield per unit of forage and per hectare were calculated using Milk2006. Summative equations were used to predict TDN and NEL. Yield of wet and DM forage sorghum exhibited a negative quadratic response as row spacing increased, reaching the maximum yield response at row spacing of 1.23m and 1.22m, respectively. In addition, negative linear effect was detected for both wet and DM sorghum forage yield as planting density increased. Regarding agronomic measurements, sorghum height exhibited a negative linear pattern as plant density increased. Otherwise, stem diameter increased as planting density increased. Whole-plant sorghum forage DM content decreased linearly with increasing planting density. Conversely, ashes increased linearly as planting density increased. Neutral detergent insoluble protein exhibited a positive quadratic effect with increasing planting density, reaching the minimum value when planting density was 104.2 x 103 plants.ha-1. Finally, a negative quadratic effect for predicted milk yield per hectare was also observed with increasing row spacing, whereas the maximum milk yield per hectare value was detected when row spacing was 1.20m. In conclusion, taking into account a subtropical climate, the ideal row spacing and planting density recommendation for a high yield and nutritional quality sorghum forage are 1.2 m and 104 x 103 plants.ha-1, respectively.

Response surface methodology was used to derive a prediction model for organic acids production by anaerobic acidogenic fermentation of cellobiose, using a mixed culture immobilized on γ-alumina. Three parameters (substrate concentration, temperature, and initial pH) were evaluated. In order to determine the limits of the parameters, preliminary experiments at 37 °C were conducted using substrates of various cellobiose concentrations and pH values. Cellobiose was used as a model sugar for subsequent experiments with lignocellulosic biomass. The culture was well adapted to cellobiose by successive subculturing at 37 °C in synthetic media (with 100:5:1 COD:N:P ratio). The experimental data of successive batch fermentations were fitted into a polynomial model for the total organic acids concentration in order to derive a predictive model that could be utilized as a tool to predict fermentation results when lignocellulosic biomass is used as a substrate. The quadratic effect of temperature was the most significant, followed by the quadratic effect of initial pH and the linear effect of cellobiose concentration. The results corroborated the validity and effectiveness of the model.

This study aimed to elaborate extruded corn snacks with the inclusion of flour made from smoked Nile tilapia trimmings, as well as evaluate the chemical, sensory and microbiological composition. The tilapia trimmings flour was incorporated in four levels, one of them was the control (without inclusion) and then 5%, 10% and 15% added in the corn grits. The microbiological analysis shows that the flours and snacks prepared are within the microbiological standards. The shavings flour presented 8.89% moisture, 60.87% protein, 15.7% ash and 11.68% carbohydrates. The inclusion of different levels of tilapia flour in the extruded snacks significantly influenced only the content of protein, moisture and carbohydrates. The protein content increased as the level of inclusion of shavings in the snacks increased, while the carbohydrate content decreased. For protein, there was a positive linear effect, whose contents went from 7.06% to 11.44%. Carbohydrate had a negative linear effect, reducing from 78.20% to 72. 63%. The moisture content showed a quadratic effect, with a range from 5.26 to 6.03%.  As for sensory analysis, there was no significant difference for any of the attributes evaluated between the different treatments. It is recommended to include up to 15% of Nile tilapia trimmings flour in extruded corn snacks with an increase in protein content of up to 38.29% and a reduction of up to 7.12% in carbohydrates.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the influence of RFI and cow age on the supplement intake and grazing behavior of beef cattle. Average daily supplement intake (kg/cow/d) displayed an RFI × cow age interaction (p < 0.01), with a linear increase in average daily supplement intake with increasing RFI of 3-year-old cows (p < 0.01). Average daily supplement intake (g ∙ kg BW−1 ∙ d−1) displayed an RFI × cow age interaction (p < 0.01), with a quadratic effect on supplement intake of 3-year-old cows (p = 0.01). Cow age displayed a quadratic effect on variation of supplement intake (p < 0.01), where 1-year-old cows had a greater CV of supplement intake than all other cow ages (p < 0.01). Distance traveled displayed a cow age × RFI interaction (p = 0.02), where high-RFI 5-year-old cows traveled further per day than low 5-year-old RFI cows. The probability of grazing site selection was influenced by cow age (p ≤ 0.03). In summary, heifer post-weaning RFI had minimal effects on beef cattle performance, grazing behavior, or resource utilization; however, cow age impacted both grazing behavior and resource use.

This article assessed the performance, carcass yield, and meat quality of finishing broilers fed increasing levels of hydroethanolic extract of guavira fruit peel (HEGP) were assessed. A total of 480, three-weeks-old male broilers were randomly allocated to dietary levels of HEGP (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 mg/kg), with five replicates and 16 birds each. There was a quadratic effect of HEGP inclusion on weight gain (WG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR), with the greatest WG and FCR being calculated at levels of 314 and 219 mg/kg HEGP, respectively. Broilers fed diets containing the extract had better performance than those fed an extract-free diet. There was no effect of extract inclusion on carcass yield and cuts. There was a quadratic effect of HEGP inclusion on a* (redness) of thigh meat at 15 min post-mortem, and on water-holding capacity (WHC), with the lowest and highest values being calculated at 270 mg/kg and 263 mg/kg HEGP, respectively. There was a quadratic influence of HEGP inclusion on the malonaldehyde content at 30-day storage, with highest value being calculated at 218 mg/kg HEGP. Dietary inclusion of 219 mg/kg of HEGP resulted in better FCR for broilers in the finishing phase but without improvement in meat quality.

The use of supplements to feed grazing ruminants may improve the productivity and profitability of beef cattle productive systems. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different supplementation amounts on the meat quality of Nellore steers finished on pasture. Forty steers were maintained on Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pasture and finished on different concentrate supplementation amounts: 0, 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9% of body weight. There was no effect (P > 0.10) of supplementation on 14:0, 14:1 n-5, 15:0, 15:1 n-6, 16:1 n-10, 16:1 n-9, 16:1 n-7, 18:1 c-9, 18:1 t-9, 18:2 n-6, conjugated linoleic acid, 20:4 n-6, 22:0 and 22:5 n-3. However, the 17:1 n-10 decreased linearly (P < 0.01) while 18:0 increased linearly (P < 0.01) when supplementation was added. There was a quadratic effect (P < 0.10) for 16:0 and 18:1 t-11, as well as for 18:3 n-6. The total concentration of n-3 was linearly reduced, whereas the n-6/n-3 ratio was linearly increased. The use of concentrate supplements for Nellore steers finished on pasture, at amounts up to 0.9% of body weight, does not improve the unsaturated fatty acids content. On the other hand, the supplementation increases the content of saturated fatty acids in meat of steers.
