OBJECTIVE To identify vulnerabilities of elderly people with HIV/AIDS and the trajectory that they follow until reaching the diagnosis of the disease. METHOD Qualitative research conducted in specialized clinics in the state of São Paulo, from January to June 2011. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 elderly people who were found to be infected with the virus at the age of 60 years or older. The interviews were analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS In this process four categories emerged, then analyzed with reference to the theoretical framework of vulnerability. CONCLUSION Late diagnosis of HIV infection or AIDS among the elderly happens in the secondary or tertiary service. Issues related to sexual life of the elderly are only questioned by health professionals after the diagnosis, also the time that condom use becomes absolute. It is believed that the investigation of the vulnerability of the elderly to HIV/AIDS allows for carrying out appropriate interventions for this population.

ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the representational content about HIV/AIDS among seropositive elderly people. Method: a qualitative study carried out from April to May 2017, in the city of Recife/PE, with 48 seropositive elderly people, through a semi-structured interview. The Social Representations Theory was used as theoretical framework and the method of lexical analysis through IRAMUTEQ software. Results: it was observed that the social representation of HIV is structured around the proximity of death and that it is a disease of restricted groups, leading to feelings of sadness. On the other hand, it is evident a transformation of the representation linked to the reified knowledge, leading to the process of naturalization of the disease. Final considerations: it is concluded that the elderly living with HIV, when they undergo a process of reframing about the disease, become more flexible to deal with their condition of seropositivity.

Abstract In this symposium, researchers will discuss conceptual and practical challenges to conducting qualitative research with older LGBTQ+ adults and older adults living with HIV/AIDS during the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers who conduct studies with LGBTQ+ populations and with older adults living with HIV/AIDS already face challenges in recruiting and retaining large enough sample sizes. Social distancing guidelines during the pandemic prohibited many researchers from conducting in-person studies. Conducting health and social science research entirely online may have its challenges when working with these older adult populations, but it may also present new opportunities for reaching hidden or hard-to-reach groups. Presenters draw on their recent experiences conducting semi-structured interviews, online surveys, and qualitative analyses of public records to illuminate the complex considerations of conducting research remotely with LGBTQ+ older adults and older adults living with HIV/AIDS. Presenters also discuss how conducting remote research with these populations may require methodological changes in study design in order to collect the most meaningful and reliable data from research participants. Ultimately, COVID-19 has required researchers to alter or change their methods of conducting research. As the internet becomes more heavily relied upon for conducting research, it is imperative that scholars in LGBTQ+ aging and HIV/AIDS consider the potential challenges and opportunities that online research presents for their studies, and for research participants who are living with HIV/AIDS or who identify as LGBTQ+.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze factors related to the quality of life of elderly people living with HIV/AIDS. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out with people aged 50 years or more in a specialized outpatient clinic. The data collection was by means of an interview. For the analysis of data and characterization of the sample, descriptive statistics and comparison tests were used. The project met the ethical requirements. Results: Participants were 81 users aged 50 to 75 years, mean age was 57.8 (± 6.1) years, 71.6% of whom were men. There was a statistically significant relationship with the quality of life, the following variables: gender, children, occupation, religion, diagnosis time, HIV exposure, adverse effects, treatment interruption, viral load counts, hospitalization, dependence for daily activities and use of drugs. Conclusion: The results suggest that the quality of life deficit is related not only to physical changes, but to the anguish and stigma related to HIV/AIDS.

Individuals experience disease in a variety of contexts. In this study, I examined how the temporal context (e.g., historical time, social time, chronological age and the passage of time) affected the incorporation of the HIV/AIDS identity into the self. I used semi structured interviews to collect data from 36 individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Historical time did little to influence the initial reaction to the diagnosis. Chronological age shaped the initial reaction to the diagnosis for some participants. Social time affected immersion in the HIV/AIDS community and the passage of time influenced the integration of the HIV/AIDS identity into the self. The findings add depth to extant studies on the incorporation of the HIV/AIDS identity into the self.

IntroductionFamily plays a pivotal function in life of all human being and their significance even increases with the age. However, living in a elderly home may result in a multitude of losses which must be addressed by individual through the process of grief.AimThe purpose of this study was to explore situations of loss and grief among institutionalizes elders.MethodsIt is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research. Data was collected from two Portuguese elderly homes in the municipality of Viseu, Portugal. A purposeful sample of 7 elders was recruited, and audiotaped face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted.ResultsThree dimensions of emotional loss were created: loss by death, loss by separation and other losses. Loss by separation was further divided into three subcategories: marriage separation, family separation and separation of peers living in the elderly home. The death of a loved one reminds the elderly individual of his/her own mortality, complicating the process of mourning. Separation, however is much more difficult to overcome because there is a loss among the living, with the possibility to lose the meaning of life with the other one.ConclusionsUnderstanding loss and grief among elderly people is fundamental for nursing care, in order to help them with the process of coping and to prevent institutionalization to become an unpleasant experience. This will also offer health care facilities suggested ways to reduce or combat loneliness and depression among the elderly people.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.
