ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the correlation between family functionality and the quality of life of the elderly. Method: Sectional and correlational study conducted with 692 Brazilian elderly between July and October 2020. The elderly filled three instruments: biosociodemographic, family APGAR and WHOQOL-Old. The tests Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson correlation, and linear regression analyzed the data. The study considered a 95% confidence interval (p < 0.05) for all analyses. Results: The elderly with mild and severe family dysfunction presented worse quality of life when compared to the elderly with a functional family. All facets of quality of life correlated positively with family functionality. Conclusion: Family functionality is positively correlated with the quality of life of the elderly, therefore requiring the inclusion of the family in health care plans to identify potential family stressors early and plan interventions to solve the problems raised.

Natural disasters, apart from economic losses, can also affect family functioning and life satisfaction due to the adverse events that are experienced. Therefore, the main purpose of the research was to know the relation between the family functionality and satisfaction with life in the community of San Antonio del Pedregal - Sector 1 in Lurigancho-Chosica, Peru; one of the geographical areas most affected by the presence of huaicos (frequent large floods in the Andean highlands) since the 1980s and that has recently experienced the adverse effects of the El Niño phenomenon of 2017. The research was correlational and transversal; furthermore, the study sample consisted of 180 local people. The results indicate that, despite the events experienced, people show moderate family functioning and are satisfied with their life. Women had a higher score in both variables compared to men, those over 60 years of age reported greater family functionality, and those under 30 years of age showed better results in life satisfaction.

Abstract Background The objective of the study was to analyze the associations of family aspects, physical fitness, and physical activity with mental-health indicators in a sample of adolescents from Colombia. Methods A cross-sectional study carried out in a sample of 988 adolescents (11-17 years-old) from public schools in Montería. Mental-health indicators were evaluated: Stress, depression, anxiety, happiness, health-related quality of life (HRQL), and subjective wellness. Family aspects included family affluence, functionality, and structure. These variables, along with physical activity and screen time, were measured with questionnaires. A fitness score was established by assessing the components of fitness: Flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, grip strength, and lower-limb strength. Associations were analyzed by multivariate linear regression models. Results Nuclear family structure was associated with lower stress level (− 1.08, CI: − 1.98 - -0.18), and family functionality was associated with all the studied mental-health indicators (Stress: -0.11, CI: − 0.17 - -0.06; depression: -0.20, CI: − 0.25 - -0.16; trait anxiety: -0.13, CI: − 0.18 - -0.09; state anxiety: -0.12, CI: − 0.17 - -0.08; happiness: 0.09, CI: 0.07 - 0.1; HRQL: 1.13, CI: 0.99 - 1.27; subjective wellness: 1.67, CI: 1.39 - 1.95). Physical activity was associated (β, 95% Confidence Interval (CI)) with depression (− 0.27, − 0.57 - -0.02), trait anxiety (− 0.39, CI: − 0.65 - -0.13), state anxiety (− 0.30, CI: − 0.53 - -0.07), happiness (0.14, CI: 0.06 - 0.22), HRQL (3.63, CI: 2.86 – 4.43), and subjective wellness (5.29, CI: 3.75 – 6.83). Physical fitness was associated with stress (− 0.80, CI: − 1.17 - -0.43), state anxiety (− 0.45, CI: − 0.73 - -0.17), and HRQL (1.75, CI: 0.82 - 2.69); screen time was only associated with stress (0.06, CI: 0.02 - 0.11). Conclusions Family aspects were associated with mental health indicators, especially family functionality which was associated all mental-health indicators. Similarly, fitness, physical activity, and screen time were associated with the studied indicators of mental health. Particularly, physical activity was associated with all the mental-health indicators, except stress, which was only associated with screen time. Physical fitness was associated with stress, anxiety, and HRQL. Future studies could explore the causal relationships of fitness, physical activity and screen time with mental health in adolescents.

This study aimed at identifying family functionality in promoting mastery of al-Quran recitation among the island residents. This Study was conducted involved 70 respondents in Primary School in Perhentian Island (Pulau Perhentian) in Terengganu State of Malaysia. This quantitative study used a questionnaire as the research instrument which focusing on the aspects of functionality support, role, environment and communication. The findings suggest that four aspects in family functionality were at moderately high-level including support (mean = 3.55, SD = 0.85), role (mean = 3.72, SD = 0.92), environment (mean = 3.47, SD = 0.81) and communication (mean = 3.73, SD = 0.89). Analysis showed no positive relationship was observed between family functionality and mastery of Quranic recitation. This shows that systematic and wisdom planning by the authority are needed so that the existing family functionality can be sustained in a quality way and subsequently help inculcate mastery of al-Quran recitation among the new generation of Perhentian Island residents.

There are numerous theoretical perspectives on addiction and the behavioural change processes during the transition from addiction to recovery. Although the precise nature of the relationship between religion and family function has not been discovered, it has been highlighted as a significant component in addiction. This study examines the relationship of family functioning and religiosity on the readiness for change among Persons under Surveillance (PuS). We randomly selected respondents (n = 85) of PuS in the National Anti-Drugs Agency (NADA), Jempol District, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, who participated in this study. Descriptive analysis was used to identify the level of family functionality, religiosity and readiness for change. Next, Pearson correlations were used to determine the relationship of family functionality to change and religiosity to the readiness for change. Findings showed a significant correlation (p = 0.00, p <0.05) between family functioning and readiness for change and it was a low positive correlation (r = +0.47). Moreover, findings showed a significant correlation (p = 0.01, p <0.05) between religiosity and readiness to change the relationship was a weak positive correlation (r = + 0.27). In conclusion, family functioning and religiosity are related to readiness for change. This relationship is significant for PuS in NADA Jempol to implement self-care and for the divisional staff involved in NADA Jempol to develop prevention and rehabilitation strategies to prepare PuS out of the drug problem.

Family is the foundation in the building of a society. Not only to society, but a well-functioning family is also important for the stability and prosperity of a country. However, the increasing cases of divorce, never-ending marital conflicts, children's involvement in negative and immoral activities as well as various other problems within the family have been indicating the failure of a functioning family institution. In order to deal with the problems that arise within the family, the role of the family leader is very important because good things within a family will not just happen without the planning and preparation made by the leader. For that reason, this article will discuss on husband’s leadership from the Islamic perspective and its relation to family functionality. Therefore, a literature review involving the books of fiqh, tafsir, hadith, and previous studies related to the topic was conducted to yield a comprehensive discussion. The results of the study found that leadership within a family is a duty that has to be carried out by the husband to the best of his abilities. The dysfunction of the husband in being the leader for his family may result in the dysfunction of the family, due to which a marriage could be dissolved. The implications of this study will provide an early understanding that a well-functioning family is highly dependent on the husband’s leadership. Thus, efforts to strengthen the family institution should start from the grassroots of leadership by focusing on the role of the husband.
