This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the presence of Staphylococcus aureus in the saliva of the nursing team of a teaching hospital in the interior of São Paulo State. Three saliva samples were collected from 351 individuals with an interval of two months between each collection. All ethical aspects were considered. In 867 (82.3%) cultures there was no identification of Staphylococcus aureus in the saliva, in 88 (17.7%) cultures Staphylococcus aureus was isolated, 26 (2.5%) of which were resistant to methicillin. The prevalence of professionals colonized by Staphylococcus aureus was 41.0% (144/351), of which 7.1% (25/351) were characterized as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Transient carriers represented 81.2% and persistent carriers 18.8%. Resistance to mupirocin was 73.1% of MRSA and 9.3% of MSSA. The results demonstrate that it is the nurse and nursing technician that are the professional categories most susceptible to MRSA. Broader discussion on the thematic and interventions are needed.

Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus, a superbug, resistant to multiple antibiotics led to growing interest in the usage of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B antibiotics, which are now rapidly developing resistance. This study aims to find the prevalence of inducible clindamycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus among obtained clinical samples from in-patient and out-patient departments of a tertiary care center. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study done in clinical samples from the in-patient and out-patient departments of a tertiary care center from September 2020-May 2021. Ethical clearance was taken from the Institutional Review Committee (Ref: 068/2077/2078). Staphylococcus aureus were isolated and antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed by disc diffusion method. Inducible clindamycin and methicillin resistance Staphylococcus aureus were detected using D-test and cefoxitin disc according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. Convenient sampling was done and the data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20. Point estimate at 95% confidence interval was calculated along with frequency and proportion for binary data. Results: Among a total of 141 Staphylococcus aureus isolated, the prevalence of inducible clindamycin resistant phenotype was 41 (29.1%) (21.6-36.59 at 95% Confidence Interval). Whereas, 30 (21.3%) were constitutive clindamycin resistant. The inducible 28 (47.5%) and 19 (32.2%) constitutive clindamycin resistance was higher among methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Conclusions: The frequency of inducible clindamycin resistance among methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus was high, which alarms the use of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B antibiotics in Staphylococcus aureus infections. Hence, D-test should be performed to detect inducible clindamycin resistance in routine testing to prevent treatment failure.

This study aimed to compare the occurrence of potentially nasal Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) of both female medical students and non-medical students at Al-Jouf University and its resistance & sensitivity of methicillin antibiotic. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 30 females’ volunteers. Students including 15 medical students and 15 non-medical students. Specimens were taken from the subjects by a sterile moistened swab, which inserted into each nostril in turn, to a depth of approximately 1 cm, and rotated five times. Then the specimens were subjected to bacteriological examination, isolated S. aureus were subjected for further identification by biochemical tests. Then methicillin antibiotic test sensitivity and resistant were performed on isolates. We found that S. aureus in both samples medical and non-medical with 60% ,and methicillin resistant S. aureus in each samples medical and non-medical with 66.7% as Statistical analysis demonstrated.
