The objective of this research was to evaluate the performance of birds and the quality and enrichment of eggs from quails fed diets supplemented with vitamins A, D and E. Three experiments were performed, one for each vitamin, under completely randomized experimental design, with six replicates and eight birds per plot, totaling 192 quails. Performance of birds was evaluated by the daily feed intake, egg weight, laying percentage (%) and food conversion, per kg and dozen of eggs. It was also evaluated the internal quality (Haugh unit, yolk index and yolk and albumen percentages) and external quality (eggshell percentage, egg specific gravity, eggshell thickness and weight) and the concentration of vitamins in egg yolk by using the high performance liquid chromatography method. Vitamins supplementation did not improve productive performance neither the internal and external quality of the eggs, except for vitamin D supplementation, which increased intake. Incorporation of vitamin A in yolk increased 536.27% at level 30,000 UI/kg, vitamin D increased 13.43% at 1,500 UI/kg and vitamin E increased 479.05% at 600 UI/kg, and these results evidence that the nutritional value of eggs, related to vitamins, can be increased through supplementation of diets for quails.

Background: Vitamin D may play important role in the pathogenesis of several components of metabolic syndrome (MS). The aim of this study was to observe the association of vitamin D with MS and its components in Bangladeshi adults with prediabetes. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done among 117 newly detected nonpregnant adults with prediabetes [age (years): 36.30±9.99; BMI (kg/ m2): 28.89±4.35, mean±SD; M/F: 23/94] based on American Diabetes Association 2018 criteria. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed by any three of five criteria: central obesity; elevated blood pressure, fasting blood glucose & triglyceride (TG) and lower HDL cholesterol. Glucose was measured by glucose oxidase, lipid by glycerol phosphate dehydrogenase-peroxidase and vitamin D by high performance liquid chromatography method. Vitamin D <20 ng/ml was considered as deficiency (VDD). Results: Among all the variables only TG was significantly higher in patients with VDD than those without VDD (³20 ng/ml) [163.0 (135.50, 224.50) vs. 143.50 (101.25, 190.0), median (IQR), p=0.048]. There were no significant correlations [p=NS for all] and associations of vitamin D with MS or its components in linear and logistic regression [p=NS for all]. Conclusions: Except TG vitamin D has no associations with MS or its components in Bangladeshi adults with prediabetes. Bangladesh J Medicine July 2021; 32(2) : 170-174

With the increased Institute of Medicine recommendation for vitamin D, more consumers are taking vitamin D from over-the-counter or prescription sources. The purpose of this study was to determine the content of commercially available, single-ingredient vitamin D supplements. Eleven commercially available dietary supplement calciferol products were purchased, repackaged, and analyzed for vitamin D content in a laboratory that was blinded to brand or manufacturer of the supplement. Vitamin D was extracted and isolated for analysis by a high-performance liquid chromatography method. Measured vitamin D content was compared with the stated label amount of vitamin D. The percentage of actual vitamin D contained in the supplements ranged from 82% and 119% of the stated label amount. Despite anecdotal reports of products with substantial content deviations from the labeled amount, no remarkable departures from labeled content were found in this set of vitamin D preparations.

A high performance liquid chromatography method for the determination of eight lignans contents in Schisandra chinensis and Schisandra sphenanthera was developed. The chromatographic column was Agilent ZORBAX 300SB-C18 column (4.6 mm × 250 mm?5 ?m). The mobile phase was methanol-water, a gradient elution was conducted and the detection wavelength was at 230 nm. The results showed that the recovery rate of eight lignans was 92.2-102.9% and RSD was 1.5-4.2%. The established content determination method was simple, sensitive, accurate and stable, and can be used to control the quality of S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera.

A high-performance liquid chromatography method was developed and validated for the quantification of the cytotoxic compounds produced by a marine strain ofAspergillus niger. The fungus was grown in malt peptone dextrose (MPD), potato dextrose yeast (PDY), and mannitol peptone yeast (MnPY) media during 7, 14, 21, and 28 days, and the natural products were identified by standard compounds. The validation parameters obtained were selectivity, linearity (coefficient of correlation > 0.99), precision (relative standard deviation below 5%), and accuracy (recovery > 96).
