The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between the radiographically measured width of the pericoronal space (PS) and the microscopic features of the follicle in order to contribute to the diagnosis of small dentigerous cysts and paradental cysts. One hundred and thirty unerupted teeth (UT) and thirty-five partially erupted teeth (PET) were radiographed and extracted. The radiographic analysis consisted of measuring the width of the PS. The results of the radiographic analysis were compared with those of the histopathologic examination of the dental follicle. The width of the PS ranged from 0.1 to 5.6 mm. The most frequently observed lining of the follicles was a reduced enamel epithelium (REE) (68.4%) in UT and a hyperplastic stratified squamous epithelium (HSSE) (68.5%) in PET. Inflammation was present in 36.1% of the UT and in 82.8% of the PET. There was a statistically significant association between the presence of stratified squamous epithelium (SSE) and PS enlargement for UT (p < 0.05). There was a tendency of association between inflammation and PS enlargements in PET and, possibly, in UT, despite the absence of statistical significance. Surgically, we did not detect bone cavitation or luminal cystic contents in pericoronal spaces smaller than 5.6 mm. We suggest that the first radiographic diagnosis for a PS enlargement, in most of the routine clinical cases, should be of "inflammation of the follicle". The hypothesis of "dentigerous cyst" or "paradental cyst" is suggested as a second diagnosis. The final differential diagnosis between a small dentigerous or a paradental cyst and a pericoronal follicle depends on clinical and/or surgical findings, such as the presence of bone cavitation and cystic content.

Medical records and radiographs were retrospectively reviewed over a 3-year period (2012-2015) from dogs presented to a private dental referral practice. Medical records were evaluated for the diagnosis of impacted or embedded teeth. The identified dogs’ radiographs were reviewed for the presence of radiographically significant cystic lesions that were associated with the impacted or embedded teeth. Radiographic criteria were established by the authors for the purposes of identifying cystic lesions in dogs of different breeds and sizes, using established indices from human dental pathology as a basis. When histopathology results were available, they were reviewed and reported. In this study, 136 dogs ranging in age from 3 months to 17 years were diagnosed with 213 unerupted teeth during the study period. There were 62 (29.1%) of the 213 radiographically apparent cystic lesions identified based on the criteria proposed in this study. In this study, 146 (68.5%) of the 213 unerupted teeth were identified as mandibular first premolar teeth. Histopathology was obtained on 28 (45.1%) of the 62 diagnosed cystic lesions. Dentigerous cysts accounted for 20 (71.4%) of the 28 cystic lesions. Brachycephalic breeds were overrepresented in this study. Boxer, pug, Shih Tzu, and Boston terrier dogs were most likely to present with cystic lesions associated with unerupted teeth. Seventeen (85%) of the 20 cases with a histopathologic diagnosis of dentigerous cyst were found within these 4 brachycephalic breeds.

Introduction: Dentigerous cyst is a pathological epithelial cavity that surrounds an unerupted tooth crown. Dentigerous cysts are usually associated with impacted teeth, mandibular third molars, first and second premolars and canines. Dentigerous cysts can occur at any age, but most cases of these cysts occur at the age of approximately 20 years. Men are affected more often than women. Purpose.To find out how the mechanism of dentigerous cysts. The cyst cavity is lined with epithelial cells derived from the epithelial enamel that is reduced from the tooth-forming organs. According to its pathogenesis, the pressure exerted by an erupted tooth on the follicle can block venous flow leading to accumulation of exudate between the reduced enamel epithelium and the crown of the tooth. These cysts are mostly due to fluid accumulation either between the reduced enamel epithelium and the enamel or between the layers of the enamel organ. This fluid accumulation occurs as a result of the pressure exerted by the erupting tooth on the affected follicle, which blocks venous flow, thus inducing rapid transudation of serum in the capillary walls. Discussion: The expansion of the dentigerous cyst causes the release of bone resorbing factor and an increase in the osmolarity of the cyst fluid as a result of the discharge of inflammatory cells, the discharge of residual epithelial enamel and tooth enamel, and desquamation of epithelial cells into the lumen of the cyst. In theory, the fluid will cause cystic proliferation. because the hyperosmolar content produced by cellular breakdown and cell products causes an osmotic gradient to pump fluid into the lumen of the cyst or it can also be said that an increase in the osmolarity of cyst fluid is the result of a shortcut to inflammatory cells and desquamation of epithelial cells into the lumen of the cyst resulting in a dentigerous cyst. Conclusion: The dentigerous cysts that surround the unerupted dental crowns are caused by the accumulation of fluid either between the reduced enamel epithelium or between the layers of the enamel organs. Dentigerous cysts can cause infection, pain, swelling, root dislocation, and resorption of adjacent tooth roots.

A dentigerous cyst is an epithelial-lined odontogenic cyst formed by an accumulation of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium and the crown of an unerupted tooth. About 70% of dentigerous cysts occur in the mandible and 30% in the maxilla and the most involved teeth are maxillary canines and maxillary third molar. Dentigerous cysts often displace the related tooth into an ectopic position. In the maxilla when the cyst expands into the sinus, usually causes total or partial occupation of the sinus cavity and can extend to the nose. We report a rare case of a 24-year-old female with bilateral maxillary third molars inside the maxillary sinuses attached to a dentigerous cyst and treated with a minimally invasive endoscopic surgery through the middle meatal meatotomy.

Tooth enamel is manufactured by the inner enamel epithelium of the multilayered enamel organ. Msx2 loss-of-function mutation in a mouse model causes an abnormal accumulation of epithelial cells in the enamel organ, but the underlying mechanism by which Msx2 regulates amelogenesis is poorly understood. We therefore performed detailed histological and molecular analyses of Msx2 null mice. Msx2 null ameloblasts and stratum intermedium (SI) cells differentiated normally in the early stages of amelogenesis. However, during subsequent developmental stages, the outer enamel epithelium (OEE) became highly proliferative and transformed into a keratinized stratified squamous epithelium that ectopically expressed stratified squamous epithelium markers, including Heat shock protein 25, Loricrin, and Keratin 10. Moreover, expression of hair follicle–specific keratin genes such as Keratin 26 and Keratin 73 was upregulated in the enamel organ of Msx2 mutants. With the accumulation of keratin in the stellate reticulum (SR) region and subsequent odontogenic cyst formation, SI cells gradually lost the ability to differentiate, and the expression of Sox2 and Notch1 was downregulated, leading to ameloblast depolarization. As a consequence, the organization of the Msx2 mutant enamel organ became disturbed and enamel failed to form in the normal location. Instead, there was ectopic mineralization that likely occurred within the SR. In summary, we show that during amelogenesis, Msx2 executes a bipartite function, repressing the transformation of OEE into a keratinized stratified squamous epithelium while simultaneously promoting the development of a properly differentiated enamel organ competent for enamel formation.

AbstractLateral periodontal cysts (LPCs) are developmental in origin and are typically seen in the canine-premolar area in the mandible and less commonly in the maxilla. Reported rate of incidence of LPCs is less than 1%, and LPCs represent only 0.8% of entire central cysts of the maxillary bone. Despite its unique clinical and radiological presentation, it is finally diagnosed due to its unique histological characteristics. Here, we present one case with characteristic findings. The routine hematoxylin and eosin–stained sections revealed reduced enamel epithelium-like cystic lining that is made of thin, nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium along with some epithelial plaques. The clinical-radio-pathological correlation affirmed the diagnosis of LPC. The pathogenesis of LPC has been discussed.

ABSTRACT Selective adhesion to only certain epithelia is particularly common among the bacterial members of the indigenous microflora of mammals. We have found that the stratified squamous epithelium of the nonsecreting area of horse stomach is colonized by gram-positive rods. The microscopic features of a dense layer of these bacteria on the epithelium were found to be similar to those reported in mice, rats, and swine. Adhering microorganisms were isolated and identified asLactobacillus salivarius, L. crispatus,L. reuteri, and L. agilis by DNA-DNA hybridization and 16S rRNA gene sequencing techniques. These lactobacilli associated with the horse, except for L. reuteri, were found to adhere to horse epithelial cells in vitro but not to those of rats. A symbiotic relationship of these lactobacilli with the horse is suggested.

Introduction Dentigerous cysts are caused by a developmental abnormality derived from the reduced enamel epithelium of the tooth-forming organ. Dentigerous cyst rarely involve impacted supernumerary tooth in anterior maxilla while commonly involve third molar tooth.   Case Report A case of dentigerous cyst in association with supernumerary tooth in a 15-year-old male patient is reported causing right nasal cavity obstruction. The present case report describes the management of a dentigerous cyst by surgical enucleation.

This study was performed to evaluate full-mouth radiographic findings to determine the prevalence of dental abnormalities and analyze the relationship between dental abnormalities and age in small breed dogs. Sixteen predetermined categories of abnormal radiographic findings were evaluated in 233 small breed dogs. In total, 9,786 possible permanent teeth could be evaluated. Of those, 8,308 teeth were evaluated and abnormal radiographic findings were found in 2,458 teeth (29.6%). The most common teeth with abnormal radiographic findings were the mandibular first molars (74.5% on the left and 63.9% on the right) and the maxillary fourth premolars (40.5% on the left and 38.2% on the right). Bone loss of any type (15.8%) was the most commonly detected radiographic abnormal finding among the 16 categories. Dental conditions with a genetic predisposition were frequently occurred in the mandibular premolar teeth. Shih tzu frequently had unerupted teeth and dentigerous cysts. Among the teeth with abnormal radiographic findings, 4.5%, 19.8%, and 5.3% were considered incidental, additional, and important, respectively. Findings that were only detected on radiographs, which were not noted on routine oral examination, were more common in older dogs. Full-mouth radiographic evaluation should be performed to obtain important information for making accurate diagnoses.

ABSTRACT: This study described the pathological aspects of a mature intracranial teratoma with meningocele in a one-day-old lamb. The diagnosis of mature teratoma was based on microscopic features, where well-differentiated tissues representative of the three germ layers were observed. The tumor consisted of respiratory, gastrointestinal and urinary epithelium as components of the endoderm; muscle and bone tissues as components of the mesoderm; and keratinized stratified squamous epithelium and adnexa as components of the ectoderm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of intracranial teratoma with meningocele in animals.

The Dentigerous cysts are odontogenic cysts which originates from reduced enamel epithelium in an unerupted tooth or it encloses the crown of an unerupted or impacted tooth at cementoenamel junction, it is estimated to about 20% of all epithelium lined cysts and 2nd most common odontogenic cyst after radicular cyst. Here is a case report of dentigerous cyst of right maxilla which has been discussed below.
