The aim of this double-blind, controlled, split-mouth designed clinical trial was to assess the effect of a single application of Gluma Desensitizer® on alleviating dentin hypersensitivity. Twelve subjects entered the study and ten completed the protocol. Each subject had two teeth treated: one with Gluma Desensitizer® according to the manufacturer's instructions and one with water. The assessment of pain was performed with the VAS (Visual Analogue Scale), after tactile (probe), thermal (cold blast of water) and thermal/evaporative (cold blast of air) stimuli at baseline, immediately after treatment, after 1 week and after 4 weeks. The mean VAS values for the test and control teeth were compared by the paired t test (alpha = 0.05). Repeated measurements ANOVA was used to compare the different experimental times. The results showed that for test teeth, at baseline, mean VAS values were 1.76 (± 2.82), 7.10 (± 2.10) and 4.75 (± 2.65), and, after 4 weeks, the mean values were 1.70 (± 2.31), 5.50 (± 3.30) and 4.61 (± 3.14), respectively for probe, water and air stimuli. For the control teeth, at baseline, the mean VAS values were 1.86 (± 2.92), 6.61 (± 2.31) and 4.08 (± 2.91) and, after 4 weeks, 2.66 (± 3.07), 6.32 (± 2.94) e 4.76 (± 3.26).There were no statistically significant differences between test and control teeth at any time. No intra-group differences were demonstrated either. It was concluded that Gluma Desensitizer® had no effect on hypersensitive teeth from periodontally treated patients for a period up to 4 weeks.

Introduction: It has been proposed that oxidative stress plays a crucial role in vancomycin-induced nephrotoxicity (VIN). Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the nephroprotective effects of lycopene, as a powerful antioxidant, on VIN. Patients and Methods: In the present study, individuals who received vancomycin (VCM) for any indication were assigned to drug (n=28) and control (n=30) groups. The individuals in the drug group received 25 mg of oral lycopene daily for 10 days started concurrently with VCM and the patients in the placebo group received placebo tablets with VCM. Serum levels of creatinine (SCr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) as well as creatinine clearance (CrCl) were determined and recorded before the start of interventions, every other day during therapy, and 12 hours after the last dose of VCM in 10th day of treatment for all participants. Finally, the mean values of the measured parameters were compared between the groups. Results: The mean values of SCr were significantly lower in drug group compared to placebo at the 4th (0.85 ± 0.18 vs. 0.98 ± 0.22, P=0.016) and 6th (0.83 ± 0.18 vs. 0.95 ± 0.21, P=0.029) days. Also, CrCl was significantly higher in the drug group at the 4th day compared to placebo (105.82 ± 20.09 vs. 94.67 ± 20.53, P=0.041). Regarding VCM-induced AKI, no case was reported in any group. Conclusion: Lycopene has the potential for diminution of VCM-induced nephrotoxicity (VIN). However, more investigations with larger sample size are necessary to confirm this effect.

Abstract Context Hemorrhoid is one of the most common diseases in both, men and women, affecting half of the world's population over the age of 50. Aims The aim of this study was to evaluate the analgesic effects of local ointment of glyceryl trinitrate ointment (GTN) after hemorrhoidectomy. Methods and Materials In this randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the patients were grouped as the treatment, that is GTN, and placebo (P) group. After surgery, 0.2% gelatin GTN ointment (250 mg), and P ointment (n = 20 for each group) were applied topically on 1 cm on the anus using a standard ruler, three times a week in respective groups. visual analog scale was used to assess the intensity of the pain and complications of the drugs were observed at 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours. Statistical Analysis Used Data and questionnaires were analyzed statistically using SPSS17 software and results were recorded in the tabular form. Results Six hours after the application of the ointment, no significant difference was found among the groups, however, after 12, 18, and 24 hours significant reduction in pain was seen in GTN group, which was least after 18 hours. The mean values of the total pain score in the first 24 hours after surgery in the GTN group were 3.15 and 5.45 in the P group which were statistically significant. Nonetheless, headache was significantly increased in the GTN group. Conclusion Simple and safe topical GTN ointment can reduce the pain after hemorrhoidectomy, leading to the reduced need of other analgesics.

AbstractRepeated measurements of density profiles and surface elevation along a 515 km traverse of the Greenland ice sheet are used to determine elevation change rates and the error in determining mass-balance trends from these rates which arises from short-term fluctuations in mass input, compaction and surface density. Mean values of this error, averaged over 100 km sections of the traverse, decrease with time from the start of observations in 2004, with a half-time of ∼4 years. After 7 years the mean error is less than the ice equivalent mass imbalance.

Abstract. The clinical picture and serum antithyroid antibodies in 16 pairs of siblings with Graves' disease were compared with an age and sex matched group of 32 patients with Graves' disease who did not have a family history of any thyroid disease (control patients). There was a significant difference in frequency and mean titres of antibodies to thyroglobulin between sibling patients. (positive 76.0%) and control patients (positive 40.0%), but not in microsomal antibodies (sibling; positive 92.0%, control; 92.0%). There were no significant differences in the mean values of 24 h 131I-thyroidal uptake, serum T3U, serum T4 and T3 concentrations before treatment between the two groups. Lymphoid follicles and degeneration of the epithelia were more often found in the thyroid glands of sibling patients than in those of the control patients, when 32 (16 sibling, 16 control) thyroid glands from the same groups in the clinical study, including antibody series, were examined pathologically after subtotal thyroidectomy for Graves' disease. Moreover, there was a strong tendency to increased lymphocyte and plasma cell infiltration in the thyroid glands of sibling patients with Graves' disease. The findings might indicate that Graves' disease is closely related to Hashimoto's thyroiditis, especially in sibling patients with Graves' disease.

AbstractThe results obtained from a study model using Sepia 200c in a herd of dairy cows led to an extended study. Overall reproductive performance was monitored monthly by a farm action list and the technique of palpation of the ovaries per rectum was used to determine pregnancy and cyclical status. A total of 101 cows were randomly treated with Sepia 200c on day 14 or 21 postpartum.Statistical analysis of the results was based on the differences between the untreated Control and Sepia-treated groups in periparturient disorders and pre- and post-service periods, and between the two Sepia-treated groups. In the pre-service period, a significant difference was found between the sepia-treated groups in the proportion of heifers calved, the number of assisted calvings and pre-service problems compared to Control. A difference of 9.9 total mean days to oestrus post-treatment was found between the Sepia-treated groups.During the post-service period, significant differences were found in the conception rate to first service, the percentage of cows in calf and total culled.A reduction (non significant) was found in the 21-day treatment group compared to control and 14-day treatment in the mean days calving to conception interval and the calving index. However, between the Sepia-treated groups a significant difference was found in total mean days calving to conception interval. The results of this study appear to demonstrate a difference in effect between the Sepia-treated groups and Control group. The study has been extended into a double blind placebo trial to find the effect of using a placebo and assess the use of Sepia given earlier postpartum on herd reproductive performance.

There is a lack of accurate three-dimensional studies to locate malar prominence for specified population, this study aims to locate the malar prominence using stable landmarks using CBCT. To derive a novel method to accurately locate the malar prominence and to assess and compare the malar prominence between males and females among Bangalore population using 3D CBCT study. All CBCT scans of study subjects belong to Bangalore population were collected from the pre-existing data available in Radiology imaging Solutions (CBCT centre), Bangalore during the period of September 10th to October 10th 2020. This is a descriptive study. A total of 42 subjects including 21 Males and 21 females were assessed using full skull CBCT scans which were converted to DICOM format and reconstructed into 3D images using NEMOCEPH 3D software. Landmarks used to locate the malar prominence were Fzs, Z, Zm and Ans. The intersection of these landmarks is considered to be as constructed maxillozygion(My). For the accuracy of the constructed Maxillozygion point (My), the distance between the actual Maxillozygion (Mzy) and constructed Maxillozygion (My) is measured and calculated between left and right halves of males and females. Three Orthogonal planes constructed were Midsagittal, Axial and Coronal Planes and the linear measurements with reference to all three reference planes in both the groups are measured. Student paired t- Test, Independent Student t Test, Mann Whitney Test. The mean distance from Mzy and my between right and left half of the face was compared using student paired t- Test. There is no significant difference (p=0.35).The mean values of the constructed anatomical landmark (maxillozygion) coordinated to three orthogonal planes between right and left sides of the face is compared using student paired T test and for both the genders (males and females) was compared using Independent Student t Test, and it is significantly higher in males as compared to females and it is statistically significant at (p=0.01). The location of malar prominence using CBCT by a novel method for Bangalore population is found which can be helpful in diagnosis and treatment planning for malar augmentation, camouflage treatment in subjects with midface deficiencies.

Abstract Introduction: The shape of the placenta and position of umbilical cord insertion are associated with perinatal outcome. Cord centrality index (CCI) is a measure of the distance of the umbilical cord insertion from the center of the placenta. Eccentricity index (EI) is a measure of placental shape. Hyrtl's anastomosis (HA) connects the two umbilical arteries and helps to equalize pressure differences. The hypothesis of the study was that there would be a significant correlation between the diameter of HA and the CCI and EI. Materials and Methods: The maximum length, maximum breadth, and distance of the umbilical cord insertion from the center were estimated using Image J software on superior view digital photographs of 88 placentae. The CCI and EI were then calculated. Relevant diameters were measured, and the twist of each umbilical cord was categorized as left and right. Strength of association was estimated using Spearman's correlation, and the independent sample T test for estimating group differences. Results: The mean values of the CCI and EI were 0.41±0.19 and 0.42±0.17. A significant correlation was noted with the diameter of HA between both CCI (0.237, p = 0.029) and EI (-0.252, p = 0.020). No significant differences were observed in the CCI and EI between cords with right and left twist. Conclusion: A greater diameter of the HA is likely be indicative of a higher difference in the blood flow between the umbilical arteries which in turn could influence the placental shape and umbilical cord insertion.

Abstract Introduction: Expiratory flow increase is a maneuver of respiratory physical therapy that promotes flow direction to the upper airways however, when applied in newborns, it may result in changes of thoracoabdominal mobility. Objective: To evaluate the thoracoabdominal mobility by photogrammetry in newborns after expiratory flow increase technique. Methods: Experimental blind study performed with newborns in supine position on a support table with upper limbs flexed, abducted and externally rotated and hip flexed at 110°. Adhesive markers were allocated for geometric delimitation of the thoracoabdominal compartment and expiratory flow increase technique was performed for 5 minutes with the therapist’s hands on the thorax and abdomen. Newborns were filmed before and after the maneuver and the frames were analyzed in AutoCAD® software by a blinded investigator at the time of the procedure. The largest and the smallest thoracoabdominal area were expressed in cm2 and the mean values were compared between two moments (pre and post maneuver) by paired t test. Results: Twenty newborns with a mean age of 39 weeks were included. Before the maneuver, thoracoabdominal area was 56.1 cm2 during expiration and 59.7 cm2 during inspiration, and after the maneuver the value was 56.2 cm2 during expiration and 59.8 cm2 during inspiration, with no statistical difference between before and after (p = 0.97, p = 0.92, respectively). Conclusion: Results demonstrate that expiratory flow increase technique does not seem to change thoracoabdominal mobility of healthy newborns.

Up to now few reports about haematological alterations induced by Giardia lamblia infection have been described. Because there are questions on this matter still not answered, we carried out a study to evaluate some erythrometric and leucometric parameters in a sample that consisted of 55 patients exclusively infected with G. lamblia and of 55 sex and age matched parasite-free individuals. The haematological parameters evaluated were: mean corpuscular volume (MCV), hemoglobin concentration, and relative and absolute number of eosinophils and lymphocytes. No significant differences in the mean values of MCV, hemoglobin levels and absolute relative lymphocyte numbers between the two groups could be detected. When the giardiasis and control groups were separated by pediatric (0-18 years old) and adult (older than 18 years) classes, a very significant difference in both relative and absolute number of eosinophils in the adult class was observed. With respect of the pediatric class, no differences, either in relative and absolute number of eosinophils, could be observed. Our findings suggest that, during G. lamblia infection, some kind of parasite allergen(s) could be secreted and be responsible for the increasing of eosinophil counts in peripheral blood of adults.
