Supplementation of mushroom substrates has been linked to a higher resistance against insect pests, although few studies show the impact of this supplementation on the different agronomical parameters of mushrooms or even their chemical composition. In this work, the variation in the biological and chemical composition of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus var. florida (Jacq.) P. Kumm) was analysed after varying the substrate supplementation of calcium silicate (0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4% (w/w%)) during two harvest flushes. Overall, supplementation did not change the weight, the number of fruiting bodies, biological efficiency, yield ratio, and productivity rate of the mushrooms, although the harvest flushes did show significant differences. Furthermore, slight changes were found in the chemical composition with an increase in vitamin D2 and tocopherols for the mushrooms with higher amounts of calcium silicate. Overall, the substrate supplementation did not seem to induce expressive changes or decrease production yields, and can, therefore, continue to be researched as a potential application to fight agronomical pests.

The comparative growth rates and wood destructive ability of two isolates of Tomes fomentarius (Fries) Kickx. were investigated under laboratory conditions. The pure cultures were obtained from 2-year-old fruiting bodies, growing on stumps of birch (Betula verrucosa Ehrh.) and spruce (Picea excelsa L.) trees situated in the same locality. Comparing the rates of growth of these isolates, on beer-must agar, it was found that isolates from spruce stumps grew faster and covered the entire surface of the medium in 11 days, whereas isolates from birch overgrew the same area in 16 days. The wood-destroying ability of spruce isolates was greater on pine, spruce, and oak wood blocks, whereas birch isolates were more destructive to birch, beech, aspen, alder, linden, and maple. The macro-and micro-scopic characteristics of mycelial mats of both isolates, as well as the fruiting bodies, revealed no difference between them.

The search for new natural sources of biologically active substances is a major issue in pharmaceutical industry. Xylotrophic basidiomycetes are common in forests worldwide, but as a prospective raw source of biologically active compounds they have not been studied as extensively as plants and other groups of fungi. The study is aimed to determine the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of extracts from 10 species of tinder fungi growing on birch and common in the forests in Russia. The chaga muchroom (Inonotus obliquus), traditionally used in medicine, was chosen as a standard species. Extracts from fruiting bodies were obtained with water or 95 % ethanol. They contained 4 to 8 types of free amino acids including 2 to 6 essential ones. Perennial basidiocarps were shown to be richer in phenolic compounds and poorer in amino acids than annual ones. Alkaloids and saponins were found in perennial basidiocarps of two species, saponins were also found in annual basidiocarps of one species. Water and alcohol extracts differed in composition and concentration of extractives, and showed different antioxidant (inhibition of lipid peroxidation) and antiradical (ABTS‑test, inhibition of NO production) activity. This way it was shown that the nature of the solvent extraction agent is important for the manifestation of biological activity. In most tests, water extracts from chaga showed better antioxidant properties; extracts from Piptoporus betulinus and Fomitopsis pinicola were also effective as antioxidants, which may be promising avenues for future research

The existence of long-range pheromones in five beetle species breeding in polypore fruiting bodies was studied in a field experiment. Species included were: Dorcatoma robusta Strand (Anoblidae),Cis jacquemarti Mellie (Cisidae), and Bolitophagus reticulatus (L.) (Tenebrionidae) breeding in Fomes fomentarius (L. ex Fr.), as well as Dorcatoma punctulata Mulsant & Rey and Cis glabratus Mellie breeding in Fomitopsis pinicola Fr. (Karst). Catches of these species in window traps baited with pieces of polypores, together with females or males of the same species, were compared with catches in traps baited with only polypores. Catches of D. punctulata and C. jacquemarti were low, and no B. reticulatus were caught. Males of D. robusta were strongly attracted by conspecific females. In this species, only the females were attracted to host odour. No pheromone attraction was demonstrated in C. glabratus, in which males and females were about equally attracted to the odour of their host.

Over the last decades, the consumption of mushrooms has significantly increased due to the scientific evidence of their ability to help the organism in the combat and prevention of several diseases (Kalac, 2009). Fruiting bodies of mushrooms are consumed as a delicacy for their texture and flavour, but also for their nutritional properties that makes them even more attractable (Heleno S. 2015). In this paper data were collected from several scientific studies with the aim to characterize the chemical composition and content of bioactive compounds of various mushrooms species: Agaricus bisporus, Boletus edulis, Cantharellus cibarius, Pleurotus ostreatus, Lactarius piperatus. The chemical composition of 5 wild edible studied mushrooms, including moisture, ash, total carbohydrates, total sugars, crude fat, crude protein and energy were determined according to AOAC procedures.
