An endemic cephalopod assemblage from the lower Campanian (Late Cretaceous) Parras Shale, western Coahuila, Mexico

The cephalopods from Union y Progreso represent the first fossil assemblage described from the Parras Shale in Coahuila, Mexico.Pseudoschloenbachia(Pseudoschloenbachia) aff.P. (P.)mexicana(Renz, 1936),P. (P.)mexicana(Renz, 1936),Baculites haresiReeside, 1927, andMenabites(Delawarella)vanuxemi(Morton, 1830) have a geographically restricted occurrence.Didymocerasjuv. sp.,Menuitesjuv. sp.,Polyptychocerasjuv. sp.,Pseudoxybeloceras(Parasolenoceras)juv. sp., andScaphitessp. ex gr.S. hippocrepis(DeKay, 1828) are represented by juveniles and could not be determined to species level.Desmophyllites diphylloides(Forbes, 1846) is the only long-ranging, cosmopolitan species described from this assemblage. Three new species are described:Eutrephoceras irritilasin. sp.,Hypophylloceras(Neophylloceras)arturoin. sp., andTetragonites silencioensisn. sp. The morphotypeBaculitesn. sp. is also inferred to be distinct. The faunal composition of this assemblage indicates a late early Campanian age. This assemblage shows a high degree of endemism. The causes for this endemism are currently unknown and difficult to assess. Nevertheless, the generic composition of the Union y Progreso ammonite assemblage suggests a short-term early Campanian endemic event.

The genus Cryphocricos Signoret, 1850 was recently determined in a molecular phylogeny to be distantly related to other taxa of the subfamily Cryphocricinae to the extent that it is now once again the sole member of the subfamily. This exclusively New World group of aquatic bugs lives in fast and usually turbulent current and respires by means of a plastron. Efforts to identify morphological features to distinguish among the species have largely fallen short, and some species have been established based on features that exhibit a high degree of intraspecific variation overlapping those of other species. Presented here is a review of the 13 described species with discussions of their features and photos of type specimens, and three new species from Venezuela and Colombia are described. Also presented is a diagnostic attribute unique to the enigmatic Cryphocricos barozzii Signoret, 1850.

Macrobiotus furciger Murray, has been considered a probable cosmopolitan species. The authors examined specimens named M. furciger from two subantarctic areas from New Zealand, and from South Africa and noted that in the subantarctic area two species are present: M. furciger and a new species here described and named Macrobiotus aradasi sp. nov. The specimens from New Zealand belong to a different species here described and named Macrobiotus divergens sp. nov., and the specimens from South Africa belong to a third new species here described and named Macrobiotus sicheli sp. nov. The authors also hypothesize that the records of Macrobiotus furciger from Andamane Islands and from Europe may refer to different species.

The Australasian spiny trapdoor spiders of the family Idiopidae (subfamily Arbanitinae) are revised at the generic level, using a multi-locus molecular phylogenetic foundation and comprehensive sampling of all known lineages. We propose a new family- and genus-group classification for the monophyletic Australasian fauna, and recognise 10 genera in four tribes. The Arbanitini Simon includes Arbanitis L. Koch, 1874 (61 species), Blakistonia Hogg, 1902 (one species) and Cantuaria Hogg, 1902 (43 species). The Aganippini Simon includes Bungulla Rix, Main, Raven & Harvey, gen. nov. (two species), Eucanippe Rix, Main, Raven & Harvey, gen. nov. (one species), Eucyrtops Pocock, 1897 (two species), Gaius Rainbow, 1914 (one species) and Idiosoma Ausserer, 1871 (14 species). The Cataxiini Rainbow and Euoplini Rainbow include just Cataxia Rainbow, 1914 (11 species) and Euoplos Rainbow, 1914 (12 species), respectively. Two distinctive new genera of Aganippini are described from Western Australia, and several previously valid genera are recognised as junior synonyms of existing genus-group names, including Misgolas Karsch, 1878 (= Arbanitis; new synonymy), Aganippe O. P.-Cambridge, 1877 (= Idiosoma; new synonymy) and Anidiops Pocock, 1897 (= Idiosoma; new synonymy). Gaius stat. rev. is further removed from synonymy of Anidiops. Other previously hypothesised generic synonyms are supported by both morphology and molecular phylogenetic data from 12 genes, including the synonymy of Neohomogona Main, 1985 and Homogona Rainbow, 1914 with Cataxia, and the synonymy of Albaniana Rainbow & Pulleine, 1918, Armadalia Rainbow & Pulleine, 1918, Bancroftiana Rainbow & Pulleine, 1918 and Tambouriniana Rainbow & Pulleine, 1918 with Euoplos. At the species level, the identifications of Eucy. latior (O. P.-Cambridge, 1877) and I. manstridgei (Pocock, 1897) are clarified, and three new species are described: Bungulla bertmaini Rix, Main, Raven & Harvey, sp. nov., Eucanippe bifida Rix, Main, Raven & Harvey, sp. nov. and Idiosoma galeosomoides Rix, Main, Raven & Harvey, sp. nov., the latter remarkable for its phragmotic abdominal morphology. The Tasmanian species Mygale annulipes C. L. Koch, 1842 is here transferred to the genus Stanwellia Rainbow & Pulleine, 1918 (family Nemesiidae), comb. nov., Arbanitis mestoni Hickman, 1928 is transferred to Cantuaria, comb. nov. and Idiosoma hirsutum Main, 1952 is synonymised with I. sigillatum (O. P.-Cambridge, 1870), new synonymy. In addition to the morphological synopses and an illustrated key to genera, molecular diagnoses are presented for all nominal taxa, along with live habitus and burrow images to assist in field identification. The Australasian idiopid fauna is highly diverse, with numerous new species known from all genera. The collection of several paradoxosomatid species in the context of ecological studies prompted an investigation into the morphology and species-level characteristics of Australian millipedes in the tribe Australiosomatini Brölemann, 1916 (Polydesmida : Paradoxosomatidae). Three new species are described: Akamptogonus caragoon, sp. nov., Australiosoma fulbrighti, sp. nov. and Australiosoma combei, sp. nov. Notes or re-descriptions are provided for nine additional species belonging to the tribe. Scanning electron microscopy was utilised to examine details of the antennal sensory fields, the fifth sternite lamella and associated pores. The presence of the fifth sternite lamella in adult males is considered a synapomorphy for the family Paradoxosomatidae, whereas the prominent tubercle on the first femur in males (adenostyle) represents a synapomorphy of the subfamily Australiosomatinae. With the description of two new species in the genus Australiosoma Brölemann, 1913 a revision of the genus was undertaken with the purpose of constructing a species-level phylogeny. The most commonly described and utilised species-specific characteristics were scored in a data matrix and analysed using PAUP. The analysis resulted in a single, fully resolved tree of the following structure: Hoplatria clavigera ((A. clavigerum, A. inusitatum) (((A. rainbowi, A. nodulosum) A. michelseni) (A. laminatum (A. combei, A. fulbrighti))).

The new genus Barsura Volynkin, Dubatolov & Kishida, gen. nov. is described for Barsine nubifascia Walker, 1864. Three new species, B. clandestina Volynkin, Dubatolov & Kishida, sp. nov., B. obscura Volynkin, Dubatolov & Kishida, sp. nov. and B. contrastata Volynkin, Dubatolov & Kishida, sp. nov. are described from China. B. simplicifascia (Elwes, 1890), stat. nov. is upgraded to the species level. Three species previously treated as Asura, B. lineata (Fang, 2000), comb. nov., B. melanoleuca (Hampson, 1894), comb. nov. and B. umbrifera (Hampson, 1900), comb. nov. are transferred to Barsura, and one species, Barsine umbrosa (Hampson, 1896) comb. nov. is transferred to Barsine. The name lineata Fang, 1993 is restored as valid. Adults, male and female genitalia of all Barsura species and representatives of the related genera Barsine and Asura are illustrated.

AbstractThe taxonomy and biology of New World species of Chrysolampinae are reviewed with diagnoses given for the subfamily, genera, and species. A key to the species of Chrysolampus and a summary of geographic distribution and information on host and floral associations are presented. Three new species are described from North America (Chrysolampus improcerus, C. luridus and C. elegans); Chrysolampus lycti Crawford is transferred to Perilampus and synonymized with the European species P. micans Dalman. The genus Chrysomalla is recorded in the New World for the first time based on the new species Chrysomalla hesperis. An explanation of the historical biogeography of the genera is proposed that is consistent with Late Cretaceous and Tertiary geological, botanical, and climatic information. It is suggested that the extant species are descendents of elements of a widely distributed arid biota.

The taxonomy of the Palaearctic Caryocolum schleichi species group is revised, leading to a largely new species concept. Initially described as four different species (C. schleichi, C. arenariella, C. dianthella, C. improvisella), these taxa were later considered as subspecies. Recently the taxon C. arenariella was re-instated to species level without, however, revision of the remaining three subspecies. Analysis of DNA barcodes of the mtCOI (Cytochrome c Oxidase 1) gene of all four validly described taxa showed an unexpected pattern of genetic diversity. Careful re-examination of morphological traits, particularly male and female genitalia, fully supported this pattern, leading to the re-instatement of C. dianthellasp. rev. and C. improvisellasp. rev. as valid species and the description of three new species, all of them occurring in the Alps: C. messnerisp. nov. (Italy, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Greece), C. lamaisp. nov. (Italy, France) and C. habelerisp. nov. (France, Switzerland, Germany). All species are described in detail and the adults and genitalia of both sexes are illustrated.

A new species of the echinolampadid genus Vologesia, V. rollingstones sp. nov., is recorded from the lower Campanian of northern Cantabria (Spain). Additionally, material of Vologesia toucasi, of late Santonian age, is described from the same area; this species had previously been noted only for southern France.

Three new species of the genus Aemene Walker, 1854 are described: Aemene cernyi sp. n. (NE India and E Nepal), Aemene laszloi sp. n. (C Nepal) and Aemene bucseki sp. n. (C Nepal and Pakistan). The Aemene taprobanis Walker, 1854 species-group is established and characterised. The status of one taxon previously considered as a junior synonym of A. taprobanis is revised: Aemene sinuata Moore, 1878, stat. rev. A taxon previously considered as a subspecies of A. taprobanis is upgraded to species level: Aemene likiangensis (Daniel, 1951), stat. nov. Lectotypes are designated for Aemene taprobanis Walker, 1854, Panassa cingalesa Walker, 1865, Autoceras grammophora Felder, 1874 and Aemene sinuata Moore, 1878. Adults together with the male and the female genitalia of the new and related species are illustrated.

The tanaid genus Hexapleomera has long been considered to be monotypic, comprising a cosmopolitan species predom-inantly commensal on turtles, or, more rarely, manatees. Recent discovery of material of a distinct species ofHexapleomera living on the hulls of yachts in south-west England encouraged re-assessment of the literature on this taxon,and re-examination of free-living benthic material from the eastern Mediterranean. As a result, five species are recognizedwithin the genus Hexapleomera; two new species are described, Pancoloides moverlyi is moved to Hexapleomera, and H. robusta sensu Edgar is elevated to specific rank and re-named.
