The aim of the study was to evaluate the amount of nitrogen taken up from air, mineral fertilizers and soil by yellow lupine (Lupinus luteus L.) and spring triticale (Triticosecale Wittm. ex A. Camus) in their intercropping cultivation. The factor examined in the experiment was percentage of yellow lupine seeds and spring triticale grain in sown mixtures: 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75 and 0/100, respectively. Yellow lupine yield was reduced by spring triticale when intercropped. In the yield of both plants the percentage share of spring triticale grain was larger and that of yellow lupine seed was smaller than in the sown mixture. Land equivalent ratio informs that yield advantage under intercropping of lupine and triticale was minor. The total protein yield was the highest in lupine cultivation when sown pure, and decreased with increasing share of triticale in their intercropping. The mean percentage nitrogen share from N<sub>2</sub> fixation, fertilizer and soil reserves in yellow lupine mass was: 65.2, 8.8 and 26.0%, respectively, while in the mass of spring triticale it was 10.1, 23.5 and 68.8%, respectively.

Background: The aim of this study was to estimate the serum biochemical (glucose, cholesterol, total protein, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium) and hormonal constituents (estrogen and progesterone) in female Manipuri pony mares during the different days of oestrous cycle. Methods: A total of 50 numbers of blood samples were collected from 10 numbers of apparently healthy, non-pregnant on the different days of oestrous cycle i.e. day 0, 4, 8, 14 and 18 by using commercial diagnostic kits. Result: The mean serum levels of glucose, cholesterol and phosphorus were found to be non-significant on the different days of oestrous cycle whereas the mean serum level of total protein and calcium was found significantly different (P less than 0.01). The serum magnesium level differed significantly (P less than 0.05) amongst the different days of oestrous cycle. Both estrogen and progesterone were also found to be significant (P less than 0.01) between the different days of oestrous cycle. The results showed significant influence on serum biochemical and hormonal assay during different days of oestrous cycle in female Manipuri pony.

The presented study aimed to determine apples trunk and branch diseases and pests in three growing systems conventional, integrated and biological (organic). The investigations were made on an experimental apple orchard (1 ha) of the Institute of Agriculture at Kyustendil, Southwest Bulgaria in four consecutive years from 2007 to 2010. Three scab resistant cultivars Prima, Florina and Erwin Baur grafted on rootstocks MM106 were planted in 1996. The orchard was divided into four plots. One plot was treated conventionally with a normal pesticide programme, two plots were treated integrated according to the general principles, rules and standards of integrated apple production and one plot for biological (organic). The monitoring of pests and diseases and assessment of their density were done every two weeks. It was established that during the experimental period important disease and pests on apple trees in different growing systems were black rot Botryosphaeria obtusa, apple clearwig moth Synanthedon myopaeformis and shorthole borer Scolytus rugulosus. The damages by trunk and branch diseases and pests on apple were considerable higher in biological growing system. The mean rate of attack of cultivar Erwin Baur by Botryosphaeria obtusa in biological and conventional growing systems was 52.35% and 4.65%, respectively. The percentage of damaged by Scolytus rugulosus trunk and branch area per tree reach to 58.74 in biological and 0.23 in conventional system. Reduced vitality of apple trees growing with out pesticides and mineral fertilizers in biological growing system was the reason for strong infection of Botryosphaeria obtusa and attack of Synanthedon myopaeformis and Scolytus rugulosus.

Maize (Zea mays L.) being a widely space crop were tried with different combinations of legumes cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp), frenchbean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and blackgram (Vigna mungo L.) as intercrops at different planting geometry to find out their suitability during 2009, 2010 and 2011 at eastern Himalayan, Arunachal Pradesh, India. Three experiments were carried out in sequence to identify suitable planting geometry to accommodate intercrops, screening best legume crops and subsequently best performed row ratio of maize and legume crops were intercropped in third experiment with 1:1, 1:2 and 1:5 row proportions. Sole maize gave the maximum grain yield with 4571.1 kg ha-1, whereas, stover yield was highest with maize-cowpea intercrop at 1:2 row ratios (8013.4 kg ha-1) and 57.1 kg ha-1 day-1 production efficiency followed by frenchbean and least with blackgram. Competition indices like land equivalent ratio (LER) was highest with 1:2 row ratio of maize-frenchbean (1.66), land equivalent coefficient (0.67). But, highest area time equivalent ratio (ATER) noticed with 1:2 row ratio of maizeblackgram (1.47). Relative crowding coefficient (K) and competition ratio were noticed higher with 1:2 row ratio of maize-cowpea, whereas, cowpea combinations has better crowding coefficient and blackgram combinations registered better competitiveness. Monetary advantage index (MAI) was 6433.2 with 1:2 row ratio of maize-blackgram followed by maize-cowpea and lowest with maize-frenchbean with the trend of 1:2>1:5>1:1 row ratios. The alley-cropping systems (ACSs), which integrate parallel tree strips at varying distances on an agricultural field can result, complementarity of resource use, in an increased land-use efficiency. Practitioners’ concerns have been directed towards the productivity of such systems given a reduced area covered by agricultural crops. The land equivalent ratio (LER) serves as a valuable productivity indicator of yield performance and land-use efficiency in ACSs, as it compares the yields achieved in monocultures to those from ACSs. Consequently, the objective of this combined experimental and simulation study was to assess the tree- and crop-yields and to derive the LER and gross energy yield for two temperate ACSs in Germany under different design scenarios, i.e., tree arrangements (lee- or wind-ward) and ratios of tree area to crop area. Both LER and gross energy yields resulted in a convex curve where the maximum values were achieved when either the tree or crop component was dominant (>75% of the land area) and minimum when these components shared similar proportions of land area. The implications of several design scenarios have been discussed in order to improve the decision-making, optimization, and adaptation of the design of ACSs with respect to site-specific characteristics.

Adequate nutritional support may prevent weight loss  following severe burn injury. However, persistently low  levels of serum albumin, transferring and serum total  protein in burn patients have suggested that a protein  deficiency may continue to exist which is out of proportion  to energy requirements.  This interventional study cross sectional study was done in  the Department of Biochemistry, Bangabandhu Sheikh  Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh  during January 2008 to December 2008. A total of 40 acute  burn injury (within 24 hours of burn) patients of 20-45  years age with 15%-30% burn were selected for this study  as case. The study subjects were divided into two groups:  Group I represent superficial burn & Group II represents  deep burn.  The mean age of 28.35±6.81 years and 30.85±7.32 years in  group I and group II respectively. The number of male in  Group-I was 08 and Group-II was 08 and male female ratio  was 2:3. The mean serum total protein before infusion of  amino acid in Group-I was 55.31±3.58 g/L and in Group-II  was 52.01±2.26 g/L (p<0.001). The mean serum total  protein after infusion of amino acid in Group-I was  68.02±2.04 g/L and in Group-II was 61.86±2.49g/L  (p<0.001). The mean serum albumin before infusion of  amino acid in Group-I was 27.6±2.88 g/L and in Group-II  was 25.57±1.89 g/L (p<0.001). The mean serum albumin  after infusion of amino acid in Group-I was 22.29±3.50 g/L  and in Group-II was 19.83±2.86 g/L (p<0.001). In group-I,  serum total protein was increased by 22.98% after infusion  and in group-II, that was increased by 18.94% (p<0.01).  In group-I, serum albumin was decreased by 19.24% after  infusion and in group-II, that was decreased by 22.45%  (p<0.05). Serum total protein significantly increased after  infusion of amino acid but serum albumin significantly  decreased after infusion of amino acid.
