Designing and developing multimodal mobile applications is an important knowledge for researchers and industrial engineers. It is crucial to be able to rapidly develop prototypes for smartphones and tablet devices in order to test and evaluate mobile multimedia solutions, without necessarily being an expert in signal processing (image processing, objects recognition, sensors processing, etc.). This chapter proposes to follow the development process of a scientific experiment, in which a mobile application will be used to determine which modality (touch, voice, QRcode) is preferred for entering expiration dates of alimentary products. For the conception and the generation of the mobile application, the AppInventor framework is used. Benefits and limitations of this visual tool are presented across the “Pervasive Fridge” case study, and the obtained final prototype is discussed.

A novel growth evaluation system for tobacco planting (GESTP) based on a B/S architecture is introduced in this paper. It mainly consists of three parts: a mobile application (mobile app), a browser terminal and a server terminal. The GESTP system is used to evaluate the growth of tobacco and give farmers planting guidance instead them having to rely on personal judgment. Once the photos of the tobacco leaf and plant are uploaded to the web server via the mobile app or the browser terminal, the application program of the server terminal is called to process the tobacco images with image processing algorithms. The results including the grade of the tobacco growth and planting guidance will be provided to the client within a 2-second timeframe, which greatly help farmers understand the growth of tobacco and take planting measures. The running result indicates that the GESTP system provides an effective and straightforward way to evaluate the growth of tobacco and provides cultivation guidance to tobacco farmers.

The parking systems in the modern age are under tremendous stress as the number of vehicles on the roads are increasing every year. Due to this increase, the current parking lots do not suffice which leads to people driving for parking spaces thus wasting valuable time and adding to the greenhouse emissions. Therefore, new efficient and innovative solutions need to be developed which meets the ever- increasing demand for parking spaces and be as environmentally friendly as possible. The solution devised in this project is an enhancement of the current parking system with an integrated mobile application which allow drivers to remotely monitor parking lots, make reservation for a spot prior to visiting the parking lot and make in app payments for the parking services. This reduces the time spent in looking for parking spots as well as reduces the unnecessary carbon emissions while offering a practical and seamless parking experience to the users.
