The article deals with the problems of cross-cultural communication connected with relationships of language and society. Today this aspect assumes the great importance because diversity of cultures is in the framework of contemporary civilization and they are in the constant process of interdependence and interaction. Each culture has its own language system and with the help of this system its speakers communicate not only within their native culture, but also beyond it. Thus, in the context the paper the author focuses on the national and cultural specificity of verbal and non-verbal communication between people of different ethnic groups by means of their national codes. National code is a goldmine for interpretation of the mentality of a nation, its spiritual culture, a mark of moral principles of people. Non-verbal means of communication have no small part in the process of cross-cultural communication. They expose national and cultural specific features of the ethnic proup, trace back deep into its history, represent national customs and traditions. In the course of cross-cultual communication non-verbal means juxtapose “image” of different culturs, baring an invariant and variant constituent part, they not only add the speech act, but also substitute the latter.

ABSTRACTA compliment is one of the speech acts that has been identified as being able to enhance communication fluency. However, if the compliment is uttered in the context of cross-cultural communication, it is not only different in its application, but also different in its way of delivery, frequency and function. This study examines the complimentary speech act used in the Japanese language of Japanese-speaking Malaysian tour guides when used towards Japanese tourists throughout their guided tour sessions. This study is a qualitative study and the data were collected through audio, visual and observational notes on the interaction of four Malay tour guides when using the Japanese language while interacting with 12 Japanese tourists during four sets of guided tours, as part of a Free Independence Travel (FIT) package. The findings show that the complimentary speech in terms of the function, strategy, and topic choice by the tour guides is accurate for the target culture. However, the response patterns by the Japanese tourists towards the complimentary speech in this cultural encounter were beyond and did not conform to the supposed norms and social rules of Japanese culture. Although the complimentary speech that was applied in this cross-cultural context was contradictory to or beyond the cultural norms, it nevertheless did not lead to conflicts. This study provides exposure on the utterance of complementary speech used by tour guides during the course of the tour visits because this will enhance the smoothness in the flow of cross-cultural communication using the medium of the Japanese language. This research is hoped to act as a reference in Japanese language education for tourism as a guide to enhance the cross-cultural communication skills of Japanese-speaking tour guides in Malaysia. Keywords: Compliments, compliment speech act, guided tour session, Japanese tourist, tour guide.Cite as: Abdul Rashid, R., Masutani, S., Mansor, N. The notion of speech act as words or utterances used to say and do things in communication has been an interesting subject in linguistics field, especially in the cross-cultural communication. Among many speech act labels, request is the one that is commonly found in Indonesia, and even certain communities particularly in the eastern part (Ambonese) have their own way of delivering a request. This paper provides some data relating to request speech act and discusses how a request can affect the face of both speaker and hearer. Simply put in Ambon, the act of requesting something from someone cannot be carelessly carried out since several aspects such as cultural norms, social status, and even age differences must be taken into account. Moreover, politeness also holds crucial part in performing a request, as in a broader sense, when a speaker appears to have an impolite manner towards his/her interlocutor, it might potentially threaten the face of the hearer. And the result of losing a face will lead to a rejection of the request itself. Therefore, it is important to have an insight regarding how to perform a request appropriately in order to save someone’s face.

In the article the phenomenon of translation is regarded as mental interpretation activity not only in linguistics, but also in literary criticism. The literary work and its translation are most vivid guides to mental and cultural life of people, an example of intercultural communication. An adequate perception of non-native culture depends on communicators’ general fund of knowledge. The essential part of such fund of knowledge is native language, and translation, being a mediator, is a means of cross-language and cross-cultural communication. Mastering another language through literature, a person is mastering new world and its culture. The process of literary texts’ translation requires language creativity of the translator, who becomes so-called “co-author” of the work. Translation activity is a result of the interpreter’s creativity and a sort of language activity: language units are being selected according to language units of the original text. This kind of approach actualizes linguistic researching of real translation facts: balance between language and speech units of the translated work (i.e. translationinterpretation, author’s made-up words, or revised language peculiarities of the characters). The process of literary translation by itself should be considered within the dimension of a dialogue between cultures. Such a dialogue takes place in the frame of different national stereotypes of thinking and communicational behavior, which influences mutual understanding between the communicators with the help of literary work being a mediator. So, modern linguistics actualizes the research of language activities during the process of literary work’s creating. This problem has to be studied furthermore, it can be considered as one of the central ones to be under consideration while dealing with cultural dimension of the translation process, including the process of solving the problems of cross-cultural communication.
