Development of Muruntau–Myutenbai joint open pit mine

Muruntau open pit mine has been in operation since 1967 and is one of the largest open pit mines in the world. As per the project of mining phase V effective since 2020, it is among the world’s three largest open pit mines. The distribution of ore reserves per horizons is analyzed with regard to nature-and-process zones delineated in Muruntau–Myutenbai joint open pit mine. The project parameters of the pit and the scope of mining operations were determined from the geological and mathematical modeling including the detailed survey data and borehole assay results. The open pit mining scenarios within the project limits of mining phase V up to 2030 are considered. The open pit mining scheduling is performed with regard to operational specifics of the deposit, number of nature-and-process zones and duration of the scheduling period. It is concluded that maintenance of the required gold content of ore to be processed needs stimulation of the annual mining output up to 50–60 Mm3 in the easterly direction of the pit at the preserved production output in all nature-and-process zones. To this effect, it is required to formulate a sustainable action plan, with the assigned performance indicators, with regard to the Extra Activity Progr am to Improve Production of Precious Metals at Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat over the period to 2026 and further on to 2040. This research article presents a software module for the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of open pit mines. The EIA software module has been developed based on the comprehensive examination of both country-specific (namely, Kazakhstan) and current international regulatory frameworks, legislation and EIA methodologies. EIA frameworks and methods have been critically evaluated, and mathematical models have been developed and implemented in the GIS software module ‘3D Quarry’. The proposed methodology and software module allows for optimised EIA calculations of open pit mines, aiming to minimise the negative impacts on the environment. The study presents an original methodology laid out as a basis for a software module for environmental impact assessment on atmosphere, water basins, soil and subsoil, tailored to the context of mining operations in Kazakhstan. The proposed software module offers an alternative to commercial off-the-shelf software packages currently used in the mining industry and is suitable for small mining operators in post-Soviet countries. It is anticipated that applications of the proposed software module will enable the transition to sustainable development in the Kazakh mining industry.

Instability of pit wall slopes is the most critical accident in open pit mining. The risk of damages to pit walls is proportional to the height of exposed surfaces and to the time of exposure. Among many factors governing pit wall stability, the major factor is geological structure and weakening zones in rock mass. Deformation processes are initiated in host rock mass of coal seams mostly because of undercutting of weak interlayers. Alongside with local undercutting, another cause of landslides is transition of coal mining from down-dip extraction to up-dip extraction. The sequence of mining and morphology of weak interlayers also have influence on initiation and evolution of deformations. The basic component of engineering solutions on pit wall stability control is optimization of mining sequence and methods of accessing working horizons in open pit mines. Large-scale deformation of Western and Southeastern pit walls in Urtui mine could be avoided using the optimized sequence of mining operations. For example, mining advance mostly along the curve of the Urtui centroclinal fold, with early access and destress of the eastern and, first of all, western wings of the fold could make it possible to evade from up-dip mining of coal seams and, as a consequence, to solve the major geomechanical problems in the open pit mine.

A 3D model of optimal contours phased development of oval-shaped open pit mines is proposed in the article. It is assumed that with enough accuracy the volumetric contour of the open pit mine is interpolated by an elongated elliptic hyperboloid. The calculation formulas for mineral resources are derived and optimal volumes of overburden are determined depending on the mining phase. In this case, the total number of mining phases is set in advance. The stripping ratio is used as a quality criterion of the optimization task. The problem of optimal control is solved using the Bellman function in dynamic programming. All the necessary calculation formulas are obtained in the final form by solving the optimization problem. Their simplicity and substantiation of each conclusion ensure that the results of this study can be successfully applied in practical calculations of the design and planning of mining operations in open pit mining.

At a number of large open pit mines in Kuzbass, coal production costs have increased due to the deepening of mining operations. In order to reduce them, separate sections of coal mining at the upper horizons are operating or are being designed for mining at low current stripping ratio. For the same purpose, open-pit mining areas at the fields of existing quarries are operated and designed. Examples of such existing and projected areas are: the “Complex Synclinal” area at the Krasnobrodsky surface mine; the “Prirezka” area at the Chernigovsky surface mine; a number open-pit areas at the underground mines; etc. The main factors complicating the involvement in the development of new sites are: the presence of residential areas, industrial buildings and structures near the boundaries of the mining area; power supply lines, transport communications, which limits or excludes the production of mass explosions in the preparation of overburden for excavation; limited size or lack of areas for external dumps at a short distance from the site (in some cases, it is possible to close the mined-out space of the worked-out quarry field). When designing the development of areas characterized by such conditions, it is necessary to consider the application of new technical and technological solutions.

In open pit mining, the loading, unloading and hauling system can represent a high percentage of the operating cost. The objective of this document is to provide an overview of the different approaches in the application of simulation models as an alternative applied to open pit mining operations that can help in decision making to optimize resources. It talks about the different types of simulation models that can be applied in mining operations such as stochastic, deterministic and discrete events. The underlying idea of this text is to highlight that with the increase in competitiveness, mining companies are in need of using simulation techniques to reduce costs, time and risks when making decisions, since simulation allows the creation of scenarios that approximate reality. In the end, the document concludes that simulation models are a tool to help in decision-making, for the optimization of resources, increased improvement and efficiency of the processes of loading, transport and unloading in open pit mines.

The issue of wastewater treatment in open-pit mining of mineral deposits is associated with great difficulties. Due to the constant tightening of requirements for the quality of discharged wastewater, its treatment in the sedimentation reservoirs and clarification ponds does not ensure the achievement of MPC values; in addition, these treatment facilities occupy significant areas of land. It should also be noted that the open-pit mines, as a rule, have several water outlets remote from each other, besides changing their location as the development of mining operations proceeds. For example, OJSC "UK "Kuzbassrazrezugol" has more than 30 places of water use, taking into account that the company structure includes 7 open-pit mines. In the article some results of analyses of pit waste water before and after its treatment in artificial filtering massifs at the mining enterprises of Kuzbass are presented. Preliminary dependences of changes in pollutant impurities in quarry water on different composition of coal waste have been established.

The shovel-truck system is commonly used in open-pit mining operations. Truck haulage cost constitutes about 26% of open-pit mining costs as the trucks are mostly powered by diesel whose cost is escalating annually. Therefore, reducing fuel consumption could lead to a significant decrease in overall mining costs. Various methods have been proposed to improve fuel efficiency in open-pit mines. Case-based reasoning (CBR) can be used to estimate fuel consumption by haulage trucks. In this work, CBR methods namely case-based reasoning using forward sequential selection (CBR-FSS), traditional CBR, and Naïve techniques were used to predict fuel consumption by trucks operating at Orapa Mine. The results show that the CBR method can be used to predict fuel consumption by trucks in open-pit mines; the predicted values of fuel consumption using the CBR-FSS technique gave much lower absolute residual values, higher standardised accuracy values, and effect sizes than those of other prediction techniques on all the datasets used. The system will enable mine planners to know the fuel consumed per trip and allow them to take mitigation measures on trucks with high fuel consumption.

Open coal mining companies in Kuzbass (Western Siberia, Russia) constantly face challenges to increase the economic efficiency of mining operations, reduce coal losses and increase profitability. One of the ways to increase the efficiency of open pit mining is to improve the technology for the development of coal-bearing zones of quarry fields on complex structured inclined and steep deposits. At present, the projects for promising deposits have been completed, and a number of operating open pits conduct the development of coal-bearing zones along their entire width by horizontal layers. The excavating and loading equipment for overburden and mining operations in these zones is diverse: quarry rope shovels, hydraulic backhoes or their joint work. When they work together in the coal-bearing zone, the rope shovels extracts the interbeds, and the hydraulic backhoes extract the coal seams. However, such technical solutions are not sufficiently substantiated. The fact is that rope shovels and hydraulic backhoes have their advantages and disadvantages in operating.

Chernogosky open pit mine integrates truck-and-shovel system of mining with overburden rehandling to internal dump with a set of walking excavators for rehandling of overburden to mined-out area of the pit. It is possible to improve efficiency of stripping in the conditions of Chernogorsky OPM by reducing percentage of stripping with more expensive handling system. The relevant research and solutions to this effect are presented in this article. Comparative characterization of mining conditions and parameters of mining systems applied is given for open pit mines Chernogorsky, Turnui, Nazarovsky, Vostochno-Beisky and Izykh. The comparative analysis points at the need to account for difficulty of mining and process sites in comparison of equipment productivity. High concentration of mining machines, which is conditioned by narrow mining front and simultaneous operation of five faces, as well as blasting operation implemented every 1-2 days, are recognized as the main constraints of excavator capacity in mining with direct dumping in Chernogorsky open pit mine. The management and engineering solutions implemented in the mine and resulted in higher efficiency of draglines are described.
