AbstractEconomically solvent fresh-market potato production is predominantly dependent on the ability to efficiently produce consistent tuber quality and high yield, and the ability to meet first-to-market demand with early-season potatoes. Unfortunately, these two qualifiers often work against each other in terms of production management. In response, we studied integrated potato vine management programs that support timely early-season potato harvest. Vine management with a flail chopper, roller, and flame burner used alone or followed by diquat was evaluated when initiated 21 or 14 d prior to harvest in 2015 and 2016. Potato varieties included ‘Yukon Gold’ and ‘Dark Red Norland’. Potato leaf and stem management, as well as tuber skinning, stolon separation, grade, and yield were quantified. Among mechanical methods, potato leaf and stem management were poor when vines were rolled or mowed but better when flail chopped. In general, vine management and tuber skin set was better when treatments were initiated 21 d prior to harvest as opposed to 14 d. Vine management, tuber skin set, and yield were comparable when potato vines were flail chopped followed by flame burning and where diquat was applied twice, offering a viable program for smaller scale or organic production.

Tomato crops (Solanum lycopersicum) under conventional production system are constantly treated against pest and diseases, with organic synthetic pesticides that are used may cause serious disturbance to environment and human health. This research was carried out in order to study the effect of homeopathic and high dilution preparations on pests and diseases management of tomato crop under organic production system. Two experiments were conducted under field conditions and one in greenhouse. All of them in randomized block design with the cultivar Santa Cruz Kada. The treatments consisted of homeopathic preparations Staphysagria, Arsenicum album, Sulphur, Arnica montana, high dilution preparations of Solanum lycopersicum and Solanum aculeatissimum, at the decimal (DH) or centesimal (CH) scale of hahnemanian high dilution. Bordeaux mixture, cupric preparation, and Bacillus thuringiensis were also included in weight doses. The preparation Arnica montana 12DH increased the tomato yield under field conditions. The damage incidence of small borer was efficiently reduced with applications of Sulphur 12CH that equalling to B. thuringiensis. The same treatment did not reduce the large borers. B. thuringiensis reduced also the septoria leaf spot incidence in the field. In greenhouse, the high dilution preparation of tomato at 12DH completely suppressed the septoria leaf spot and drastically reduced the same disease at 24DH. The homeopathic and high dilution preparations have the potential to be effective on replacing pesticides that are used on tomato, and could be suitable to fill legal requirement for organic production system.

In our study, vegetative characteristics of 39 apple cultivars were evaluated in environmentally friendly production systems. Numbers of the branches of the central leader in different high zones were shown. According to our results, number of the branches of the axis was probably larger in the integrated production system, compared to the organic one, which is related to the conditional status of the trees. Based on our experiences training and maintaining canopies in integrated system was easier, as relative more extensive canopies were needed in organic farming.

The use of water has generated some conflicts due to increasing water scarcity around the world, the largest consumer sectors are agriculture accounts for 70 %, the industrial sector 22% and 8% corresponds to the household. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects caused by nitrogen and phosphorus and irrigation with reclaimed water post- treated domestic sand filter with intermittent flow during the initial growth of eggplant in Paraíba semi-arid region. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in the Science and Technology Center Agrifood (CCTA / UFCG), Campus de Pombal - PB, and the treatments resulted in the combination of two factors: four doses of nitrogen (N1 - 3.55; N2 - 6.2; N3 - 8.9; N4 - 11.55 g N / pot) and four doses of phosphorus fertilization (P1 - 15.28; P2 - 26.74; P3 - 38.2; P4 - 49 66 g P / pot) corresponding respectively to 40; 70; 100; 130% as fertilizer indication for eggplants when grown in pots irrigated with treated wastewater post-intermittent sand filter (AR). The experimental design was a completely randomized design, with treatments arranged in a factorial 4 x 4, with four replications. We conclude it the practice of irrigation with reclaimed water emerges as a water and nutrient source for the eggplant crop, soil and weather conditions in the semiarid; Doses of 3,55 g of N and 15,28 g P per plant when using reclaimed water in irrigation eggplants are sufficient to meet the nutritional needs of the crop. The fresh weight of eggplants sheet decreased linearly with increasing N rates. The production shoot fresh and dry mass of eggplant plants irrigated with reclaimed water to 40% of fertilization with N and P did not differ from plants that received 100 % of N and P indication.</p><p><span><br /></span></p>

Background: The intensive rearing systems of goats needs dietary formulations that will meet animal requirements, mainly the protein and energy to allow optimum growth rate. Alternative systems to attain 15-20 kg body weight by three months of age with better meat quality is need of the hour. Broiler goat production system is most suitable system of rearing for meat goat production. The current study was conducted to examine the impact of broiler goat production system on the carcass traits and meat quality characteristics of Malabari male kids. Methods: Fourteen pre-weaned kids were randomly allotted to two treatments. Treatment-I (T1) kids were allowed to suckle thrice a day during four weeks and twice in a day during consequent weeks. Whereas in Treatment-II (T2), kids were reared intensively by providing finely ground concentrate feed mixed with equal quantity of rice gruel from a feeding bottle after 7 days of colostrum feeding from the mother. The animals were slaughtered at an age of three months and the final body weight, carcass traits like dressing percentage, weight of different body parts and meat quality parameters like pH, color, cooking loss and shear force were analysed. The proximate composition and sensory evaluation was performed. Result: Broiler goat production system could produce significantly (P less than 0.01) higher final average body weight compared to natural system. All the carcass traits were significantly (P less than 0.01) higher in T2. The broiler goat production system could double the net live weight during the same period compared to natural suckling system with higher dressing % and the chevon produced was tender with less cooking loss. Hence, this system can be recommended for chevon production in shorter period with higher dressing % and lesser cooking loss in Malabari male kids.
