The analysis results of the structural-functional organization of littoral zooplankton community of the upper Kremenchug Reservoir in the territory of Kaniv Nature Reserve during the summer of 2015 are presented. Diversity of zooplankton was presented with 34 species: Monogononta rotifers, cladocerans, copepods. The rotatoria-cladoceran zooplankton complex dominated in the taxonomic composition. Zhakkara dominant index for the comparison of the dominant species complexes was used, and it was the low number of similarities within the various biotopes of the six research stations (J = 7,1-28,6). This can be explained by the formation of higher aquatic plants.This led to the formation of specific zooplankton groups in overgrown biotopes.The ecological spectrum of the different groups of the upper Kremenchug Reservoir littoral zooplankton in the summer was characterized by the predominance of the phytophilic groups: phytophilic – 18 species (53 % of all zooplankton species). Depending on the feeding type the largest part was made by the peaceful group – 73,3 % (25 species). Summer littoral zooplankton in quantitative terms was characterized by very low development in both biotopes. Its density varied within 4077± 2098 ind./m³ and biomass 0,07 ± 0,04 g/m for overgrown biotopes, and 4123 ± 3929 ind./m³ and 0,054 ± 0,038 g/m³ for freshwater ones. Among the quantitative indicators, the species of Copepoda dominated, what was associated with the development of their larval stages (Nauplia, Сalanoida juv., Cyclopoida juv.) in the summer period.

Long-term studies had been held on the lakes of the Volga-Kama State Natural Reserve (Russia). The aim of our research was to study the biodiversity of planktonic rotifers and crustaceans, zooplankton community structure characteristics and also water quality assessment with bioindication methods. 137 species of zooplankton were identified in our research. In all lakes rotifers were presented by highest number of species. The lowest number ofspecies was found for copepods. In general, the species composition of zooplankton is typical for eutrophic lakes of Middle Volga region. The species most commonly found in lakes are indicators of eutrophic waters. We also analyzed and compared the structure of zooplankton communities and taxonomic composition in different types of nature reserve lakes. It was shown that changing the relationship between taxonomic groups of zooplankton and increase of rotifers in the community is also a sign of eutrophication. According to the abundance rotifers dominated in most lakes. Drastic changes in quantitative indicators of zooplankton during the growing season, due to an increase in the abundance of one of the species were typical of eutrophic lakes of the reserve. Studies have shown that in meso-eutrophic and eutrophic lakes the indicators that reflect the structure of the zooplankton community are the most informative for the assessment of the water quality. Lakes Raifskoe and Ilinskoe were the least polluted, and characterized by the structure of communities of mesotrophic type. The rest of the lakes are more prone to eutrophication processes and community structure of zooplankton corresponds to eutrophic lakes type.

The analysis results of spatio-temporal dynamics of zooplankton communities from littoral of the Oleksandrivka reservoir are presented. The features of the seasonal changes in species composition, faunal and ecological spectrums, quantitative indicators (density and biomass) and the dominant species complexes of littoral zooplankton was revealed. The analysis of seasonal dynamics of qualitative and quantitative development of zooplankton in the littoral zone within the upper, middle and lower parts of the Oleksandrivka reservoir was conducted.

In the present study, two small lakes on the margins of the River Cuiabá were analyzed regarding taxonomic composition and population densities of the zooplankton. Diversity was evaluated for two groups, Rotifera and Cladocera; sampling was carried out on two dates: 2 March 1999, in the rainy season, and 25 August 1999, in the dry season. Seventy-nine rotifer taxa, 30 cladoceran taxa, and 6 copepod taxa were found. Comparing the species identified in the present study with those recorded by other authors for several water bodies in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul states, it was found that 9 species of Cladocera, 2 of Copepoda, and 14 of Rotifera are new records for the region. The most abundant rotifer species were Keratella cochlearis, Brachionus angularis, Polyarthra vulgaris, and Keratella americana. Moina minuta and Bosminopsis deitersi were dominant among the cladocerans, and Notodiaptomus transitans and N. devoyorum among the copepods. Comparing both lakes, the greatest species richness of both Rotifera and Cladocera was observed in Lake Souza Lima, during the rainy season. This is probably linked to the fact that the littoral region of this lake is densely colonized by macrophytes. The lake also has better environmental conditions since it does not receive domestic sewage inputs, as does Lake Parque Atalaia. The diversity of the Rotifera was markedly low in Lake Parque Atalaia, during the dry season, again perhaps linked domestic sewage input found in this water body.

SUMMARYSince the first description of Marteilia refringens (Paramyxea) in flat oysters Ostrea edulis in 1968 in the Aber Wrach, Brittany (France), the life-cycle of this parasite has remained unknown. However, recent studies, conducted in the ‘claire’ system, have proposed the planktonic copepod Acartia grani as a potential intermediate host for the parasite. Nevertheless, experimental transmission of the parasite through the copepod has failed. Recent studies in this field have reported the presence of the parasite in zooplankton from the bays of the Delta de l'Ebre, a more complex and natural estuarine environment than that of the claire. As a result, 2 new Marteilia host species were proposed: the copepods Oithona sp. (Cyclopoida) and an indeterminate Harpaticoida. Consequently, the objective of the present work was to study the dynamics of Marteilia in the zooplankton community from one of the bays, Alfacs Bay, as well as the dynamics of the parasite in cultivated mussels during 1 complete year. Six different zooplankton taxa appeared to be parasitized by M. refringens, including copepods (3 Calanoida, Acartia discaudata, A. clausi and A. italica; 1 Cyclopoida, Oithona sp.; and 1 Harpacticoida, Euterpina acutifrons), and larval stages of decapod crustaceans (zoea larvae of Brachyura, probably Portumnus sp.). These taxa are thus proposed as new subjects for study, since they could be intermediate hosts in the infection process of mussels by Marteilia.

AbstractThe diversity and longitudinal variation of zooplankton in the lower Vistula River were analyzed. Samples were taken from 40 stations located along a 272-km long section of the lower river course. During the study the unique technique of taking samples from “the same water” was used. The zooplankton community was dominated by rotifers and nauplii — larval stages of copepods. The most abundant species were: Brachionus angularis, Brachionus calyciflorus and Brachionus budapestiensis. The zooplankton species diversity in the main channel of the lower Vistula River was similar to other large European rivers; however, its abundance was lower. The diversity, abundance and biomass of potamoplankton steadily decreased downstream. This could be related both to scarcity of storage zones for potamoplankton development in the river due to the extensive regulation processes, and changes in hydrological conditions of the main channel (by the straightening of riverbed) where the samples were collected.

Trophic diversity within guilds of terrestrial predators is explored in three modern and two ancient communities. The modern communities span a range of environments including savannah, rainforest, and temperate forest. The paleocommunities are North American, Orellan (31–29 Ma), and late Hemphillian (7–6 Ma), respectively. The predator guilds are compared in terms of: 1) species richness; 2) the array of feeding types; and 3) the extent of morphological divergence among sympatric species. Feeding type is determined from dental measurements that reflect the proportion of meat, bone, and non-vertebrate foods in the diet. Measurements include estimates of canine shape, tooth size, cutting blade length, and grinding molar area. Morphological divergence among sympatric predators is measured by calculating Euclidean distances among species in a six-dimensional morphospace. Results indicate that the number of predator and prey species are roughly correlated in both ancient and modern communities. Two of the predator guilds, the late Hemphillian and modern Yellowstone, contain relatively few species and appear to be the result of extinction without replacement. Despite differences in history, age, and environment, the extent of morphological divergence within guilds does not differ significantly for the sampled communities. It is clear that the basic pattern of adaptive diversity in dental morphology among coexisting carnivores was established at least 32 million years ago. It appears that interspecific competition for food has acted similarly to produce adaptive divergence among sympatric predators in communities that differ widely in time, space, and taxonomic composition.

For the first time, we present the materials of the spatial distribution of qualitative and quantitative indicators of zooplankton in the first year of top water level (TWL) in the Boguchany Reservoir. We indicate the dynamics of the formation of the zooplankton community in the Upper section of the reservoir during its filling (from 2013 to 2015). The Irkutsk, Bratsk, and Ust-Ilimsk reservoirs influence the composition and structure of zooplankton in the Boguchany Reservoir that closes the cascade of the Angara HPPs, and there is a great similarity of the crustacean and rotifer fauna with the upstream artificial reservoirs. During the study period (from 2013 to 2017), the plankton fauna included 84 species from 49 genera and 23 families. The horizontal distribution of quantitative indicators throughout the water area of the reservoir had a mosaic pattern. The relative and absolute proportion of rotifers in the composition of zooplankton decreased from the Upper section to the Lower one, and the dominance of crustaceans was opposite. Due to this, the maximum number (129±97.8 thou ind./m3) of zooplankton was recorded in the Upper section, and the biomass (2080±676 mg/m3) – in the Lower section. The obtained unique data on the composition, structure and quantitative development of zooplankton in the Boguchany Reservoir during its formation and filling are important for further monitoring of its state, including the assessment of the feeding of planktonophagous fish and juvenilefish.

Based on the data of integrated observations, the variability of phytoplankton, the amount of suspended organic matter and zooplankton of the pelagic zone of the Kerch Strait and the pre-strait zone of the Black Sea is considered. The algal flora of the entire Black Sea, the Kerch Strait and the pre-strait is characterized by the predominance of diatoms over pyridineas (pyrrophytes or dinoflagellates). The study of the species range, number and biomass of the phytoplankton community during several periods of the year showed that its dynamics is largely dependent on seasonal weather changes (climate). In the process of phytoplankton development, several phases of autogenic succession were revealed. It is expressed in a sequential change in phytoplankton forms, changes in its abundance and biomass typical of the eastern shelf of the Black Sea. The zooplankton community of the Kerch Strait is represented by micro-, meso- and macro- zooplankton typical of the Black Sea. Microzooplankton is represented by zooflagellates and protozoa, as well as by early larval stages of planktonic crustaceans, apendicularia and mollusks. Its total biomass averages about 80 mg/m3.The above analysis of the collected material allows us to conclude that the distribution of suspended matter and larvae is related primarily to the peculiarities of water circulation in the strait. In the case of low concentrations of larvae, the dynamic factor can be decisive in the process of sedimentation intensity. The amounts of suspended matter can reach 20 mg/m3, which is 2-3 times higher than on average for the Black Sea. It further demonstrates the high productivity of waters and the prospects of the latter to be the area for commercial growing of mussels.

Based on the materials of hydro-biological studies in the Volga part of the Kuibyshev reservoir in 2018 and 2019, the authors evaluated changes in the quantitative indicators and taxonomic composition of phytoplankton and zooplankton. According to the results of the study, it was revealed that in 2019 the taxonomic diversity increased, but the abundance and biomass indices of phytoplankton decreased, while zooplankton decreased only in its abundance.
