Information is requested for the publication of an article on the relationship of alcohol use to violence and criminal behavior. The article, employing a cross-cultural anthropological perspective, is to appear in the book Alcohol and Aggression edited by Paul F. Brain of the University of Swansea, to be published in England. In the Autumn of 2002, I Gave a Lecture on Mourning the Dead to Final-Year Undergraduates at the University of Cambridge studying the compulsory course on tragedy. The lecture covered the care devoted to the dead body in Sophocles's Antigone and Hamlet's reflections, over Ophelia's grave, on the “fine revolution” of the material corpse (5.1.82-83). But it also extended its range to include the then very recent excavation, for eight and a half months, at Ground Zero in search of the remains of the dead victims of the attack on the World Trade Center, and the simultaneous daily publication in the New York Times of “Portraits of Grief.” These portraits, I maintained, fulfilled a similar function to tragic drama by refocusing attention on the individual life and by finding a narrative arc to each victim's story, like Aristotle's tragic plots, which must have “a beginning, a middle, and an end” (26). While the firefighters' digging equipment at Ground Zero searched in vain for the missing remains of about 1800 people and eventually hit bedrock, the newspaper reinvested each lost person with significance, finding a value and a pattern in the person's life.

The decade after the attacks of 9/11 and the fall of the World Trade Center saw a proliferation of New York-themed literary anthologies from a wide range of publishers. With titles like Poetry After 9/11, Manhattan Sonnet, Poems of New York, Writing New York, and I Speak of the City, these texts variously reflect upon their own post-9/11 plurivocality as preservative, regenerative, and reconstructive. However, the work of such anthologies is more complex than filling with plurivocality the physical and emotional hole of Ground Zero. These regional collections operate on the dilemma of all anthologies: that between collecting and editing. Every anthology, and every anthologist, negotiates the relationship between what is present and what is missing. In light of some of the emerging and established scholarship on the history of the English-language anthology, this article reads closely the declarative paratexts and the silent but equally powerful canonical choices of several different post-9/11 poetry anthologies. In so doing, the article comes to suggest the ways the anthology’s necessary formal incorporation of absence and presence, rather than its plurivocality alone, connects collections of New York’s literature to the fraught discourse of memorialization and rebuilding at the site of the World Trade Center.

The change in educational paradigms has led to the need to define new methodological regulations that allow to consider the objects of pedagogical reality from a different angle. This led to the need to study traditional issues of pedagogy in an innovative context. The issue of forming students’ independent learning activities is not new for pedagogy. However, we present it from the perspective of an integrative-reflexive approach, which allowed us to identify its internal potential for personal development. The theoretical methods of pedagogical research used in the study: analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization, method of causal relationships research, etc., which allowed to mentally penetrate into the essence of the studied pedagogical phenomenon and rethink it in a new educational reality. It is established that the educational independent activity accumulates the reflexive and didactic potential for professional and personal formation and development in the process of studying at the university. The possibilities of reflexive discourse as a way of realizing the reflexive-didactic potential of educational independent activity in the learning process are determined. According to the structure of the process of reflection in educational independent activity we distinguish the stages of reflexive discourse: reflexive-indicative, reflexive-presentative and reflexive-realizational. We consider the relationship of these stages of the discourse with various types of reflection and features of self-assessment, self-analysis, self-design and self-realization as structural components of educational independent activity.

This paper aims at investigating the relationship between the application of innovation and entrepreneurship system and the university competitive advantage in the Jordanian higher education sector.     To collect the required data, the number of some concerned individuals was surveyed through a carefully designed questionnaire that has become the main instrument to obtain the required data.A random sample of university managerial staff was withdrawn from five private Jordanian universities. The collected data was audited, reviewed and statically analyzed using the most relevant statistical test. The results of the statistical analysis have clearly pointed out that university adoption of innovation and entrepreneurship system has a significant effect on its competitive advantage.

The subjects of the two texts analysed in this article are two highly significant recent historical events: the death of Lady Diana in a car crash after being chased by paparazzi on 31 August 1997 and the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on 11 September 2001, which are addressed by the Italian writer Beppe Sebaste and the French writer Frédéric Beigbeder, respectively. An analysis of each text shows that they not only examine the events in question through reportage, but they are also strongly personal and subjective. Both texts also put forward literary writers to help ‘read’ extensively mediated events, provoking reflection on how news travels and is mediated in increasingly immediate ways in today’s world, while also harking back to New Journalism. They could be called ‘unidentified narrative objects’, a label I borrow from the Italian writer Roberto Bui, alias Wu Ming 1, who has applied it to a corpus of recent Italian texts (including that of Sebaste), that combine modes of writing – such as journalism, history, detective fiction and life-writing – often blurring the boundaries between fiction and nonfiction, in order to more effectively draw their readers’ attention to the national and global issues they address. Here, I extend the term unidentified narrative objects beyond Italy’s borders to the work of Beigbeder and others, suggesting that such hybridity is connected to how we process the world around us today and a new iteration of literary journalism.
