Traffic congestion at junctions is a serious issue on a daily basis. The prevailing traffic light controllers are unable to manage the different traffic flows. Most of the current systems operate on a timing mechanism that changes the signal after a particular interval of time. This may cause frustration and result in motorist's time waste. Traffic congestion is a major problem in the currently existing systems. Delays, safety, parking, and environmental problems are the main issues of current traffic systems that emit smoke and contribute to increasing Global Warming. Sensor-based systems reduce the waiting time and maximize the total number of vehicles that can cross an intersection. Our proposed system can control the traffic lights based on image processing without the need for traffic police. This can reduce congestion, delay, road accidents, need for manpower. Under image processing, we use sub techniques like RGB to Gray conversion, Image resizing, Image Enhancement, Edge detection, Image matching, and Timing allocation. A real-time image is captured for every 1 second. After edge detection procedure for both reference and real-time images, these images are compared using SURF Algorithm. Then the amount of traffic is detected and the details are stored in the server. Arduino is used for a traffic signal in the hardware part. It consists of a Wi-Fi module. The micro-controller used in the system Arduino. Four cameras are placed on respective roads and these cameras are used to capture images to analyze traffic density. Then the traffic signals are decided according to the density of traffic. Our technique can be effective to combat traffic on Indian Roads. A lot of time can be saved by deploying this system and also it conserves a lot of resources as well as the economy

The studies and real situations shown that the traffic congestion is one of nowadays highest problems. This problem wassolved in the past using roundabouts and traffic signals. Taking in account the number of cars that is increasing continuously, we can see that past approaches using traffic lights with fixed-time controller for traffic signals timing is obsolete. The present and the future is the using of Intelligent Transportation Systems. Traffic lights systems should be aware about realtime traffic parameters and should adapt accordingly to them. The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach to control traffic signals using rate-monotonic scheduling. Obtained results will be compared with the results obtained by using others real-time scheduling algorithms.

Traffic congestion is now a big issue. Although it seems to penetrate throughout the world, urban towns are the ones which are most effected. And it is expanding in nature that it is necessary to understand the density of roads in real time to better regulate signals and efficient management of transport. Various traffic congestions, such as limited capacity, unrestricted demand, huge Red Light waits might occur. While insufficient capacity and unlimited demand are somehow interconnected, their delay in lighting is difficult to encode and not traffic dependant. The necessity to simulate and optimise traffic controls therefore arises in order to better meet this growing demand. The traffic management of information, ramp metering, and updates in real-time has been frequently used in recent years for image processing and monitoring systems. An image processing can also be used for the traffic density estimation. This research describes the approach for the computation of real-time traffic density by image processing for using live picture feed from cameras. It focuses also on the algorithm for the transmission of traffic signals on the road according to the density of vehicles and therefore aims to reduce road congestion, which reduces the number of accidents.

Traffic Light Optimization aims to find the solution for an increased amount of unnecessary waiting time on traffic signals. Traffic Signal Optimization is the process of changing the timing parameters relative to the length of the green light for each traffic movement and the timed relationship between signalized intersections using a computer software program. Our project aims to set the timer of green light based on real-time traffic congestion i.e. number of vehicles in a particular direction of the traffic light. To work in this project, we are using the OpenCV method to detect vehicles and then perform our calculation in the algorithm to predict the time for the green light to be in an active state.

The following research document seeks to show an alternative to vehicle control systems using existing technologies to develop a system that is efficient and reliable. The creation and operation of a traffic light network will be presented, which will be located in an area where there is traffic congestion. The following network will reorganize, optimize, and measure the vehicular flow in real time. In some countries, intelligent traffic lights have been implemented, with which they have obtained satisfactory benefits by improving the vehicular flow of the places where these systems are located; for this reason we consider it necessary to use smart traffic lights in our country.

Traffic light detection and back-light recognition are essential research topics in the area of intelligent vehicles because they avoid vehicle collision and provide driver safety. Improved detection and semantic clarity may aid in the prevention of traffic accidents by self-driving cars at crowded junctions, thus improving overall driving safety. Complex traffic situations, on the other hand, make it more difficult for algorithms to identify and recognize objects. The latest state-of-the-art algorithms based on Deep Learning and Computer Vision are successfully addressing the majority of real-time problems for autonomous driving, such as detecting traffic signals, traffic signs, and pedestrians. We propose a combination of deep learning and image processing methods while using the MobileNetSSD (deep neural network architecture) model with transfer learning for real-time detection and identification of traffic lights and back-light. This inference model is obtained from frameworks such as Tensor-Flow and Tensor-Flow Lite which is trained on the COCO data. This study investigates the feasibility of executing object detection on the Raspberry Pi 3B+, a widely used embedded computing board. The algorithm’s performance is measured in terms of frames per second (FPS), accuracy, and inference time.

Traffic Management is a big issue which impacts us almost daily. Use of technology such as IoT and image processing can lead to a smooth traffic management system. The common reason for traffic congestion is due to the lack of an efficient traffic prioritization system. The internet of things is a network of devices. The embedded systems includes sensors, actuators, and electronics. With software and connectivity locally or over internet  helps in  transfer of data. Each of these devices is uniquely identifiable in the network and are highly interoperable. Image processing using OpenCV is a technique that is used to process an input image and obtain the traffic densities along various lanes in a junction. Existing traffic management solutions include using RFID tags on vehicles to obtain a vehicle count. This can also be done using ultrasonic sensors. The problem with these methods is that when implemented in a large scale, the cost of the entire system can be exponentially higher than an image processing approach as each vehicle will have to be fitted with an RFID tag. Hence, implementing this model at a largescale level, for example in a metropolitan city will be time consuming and expensive. This has led to the development of our algorithm, which uses image processing and IoT along with CCTV cameras. This system is efficient, as it uses CCTV cameras that are already present in traffic signals of most major metropolitan cities. Hence implementing the system at a largescale level is feasible. This algorithm also takes care of corner cases like heavy utility vehicles and motorbikes. It can also be used at night and during unfavorable weather conditions. The algorithm used detects the density of traffic as opposed to the count of vehicles by taking input images from a CCTV camera, comparing it with a sample image of an empty road and obtaining a match percentage. The traffic density can be found easily using this since it has a disproportionate relation with the match percentage. The traffic signals can be altered accordingly using the traffic density. The output is then sent to the ThingSpeak cloud where it can be analyzed.

Abstract: Traffic signal control frameworks are generally used to monitor and control the progression of cars through the intersection of roads. Moreover, a portable controller device is designed to solve the issue of emergency vehicles stuck in overcrowded roads. The main objective of this paper is to design and implement a suitable algorithm and its simulation for an intelligent traffic signal simulator. The framework created can detect the presence or nonappearance of vehicles within a specific reach by setting appropriate duration for traffic signals to react accordingly. By employing mathematical functions and algorithms to ascertain the suitable timing for the green signal to illuminate, the framework can assist with tackling the issue of traffic congestion. The explanation relies on recent fixed programming time. Keywords: Smart Traffic Light System, Smart City, Traffic Monitoring.

Intelligent Transport System (ITS) is blooming worldwide. The Traditional Traffic management system is a tedious process and it requires huge man power, to overcome this we have proposed an automatic Traffic monitoring system that has effective fleet management. The current transportation system at intersections and junctions has Traffic Lights with Fixed durations which increase the unnecessary staying time which intern harms the environment. An Adaptive traffic light control is implemented using SUMO simulator, that changes the duration of Green and Red light according to the traffic flow. This is an effective and efficient way to reduce the Traffic congestion. The traffic congestion is determined by taking the object count using deep learning approach (Convolutional Neural Network).

Traffic management of intersections is an important factor that can determine traffic density at the intersection, as well as its surrounding. Long traffic queues we encounter in daily life, were often caused by ineffectiveness of traffic lights management of the cross sections. In this article, an analytic study of traffic light management of a four-leg intersection, based on the kinematic LWR model, was presented. Comparison was based on observing the end of queues over three cycles of red-green lights, under the assumption of a constant traffic flux. On every leg of the intersection, the end of the queues were obtained from characteristic lines of the shock waves. From these observations, the three phase regulation was preferred over the four-phase one. Finally, a case study of Taman Sari - Baltos intersection located in Bandung City, Indonesia, was discussed. Parameter values used in these simulations were obtained from direct observation.

Traffic lights play such important role in traffic management to control the traffic on the road. Situation at traffic light area is getting worse especially in the event of emergency cases. During traffic congestion, it is difficult for emergency vehicle to cross the road which involves many junctions. This situation leads to unsafe conditions which may cause accident. An Automatic Traffic Light Controller for Emergency Vehicle is designed and developed to help emergency vehicle crossing the road at traffic light junction during emergency situation. This project used Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) to program a priority-based traffic light controller for emergency vehicle. During emergency cases, emergency vehicle like ambulance can trigger the traffic light signal to change from red to green in order to make clearance for its path automatically. Using Radio Frequency (RF) the traffic light operation will turn back to normal when the ambulance finishes crossing the road. Result showed the design is capable to response within the range of 55 meters. This project was successfully designed, implemented and tested.
