Aim. Prediction of primary, general morbidity and mortality of persons with alcohol use disorders, registered at a dispensary in the Kostroma region of Russian Federation. Methods. Statistical data for 24 districts of the Kostroma region, 1999-2012 was analyzed. In addition to graphical method and mapping the least-squares method, ranking, estimation of absolute increase/decrease and the average annual growth/loss rate were used. Information was obtained from the statistical reports of regional addictions dispensary (statistical form number 37), Statistical yearbook of National Research Center of Addictions, Ministry of Health of Russian Federation. Results. Structure of patients treated for alcohol disorders in the Kostroma region almost virtually unchanged over the past 10 years, the proportion of persons with chronic alcoholism was 46.5%, drinkers with harmful consequences - 32.4%, alcoholic psychosis - 21.1%. In 2012 the number of primary identified alcohol consumers with harmful impact on the health was 72.8% less compared to the average index for Russian Federation and 27.5% compared to Central Federal District. We have revealed mild, prone to stabilization trend of increase in the incidence of chronic alcoholism and psychosis for 14 years studied, average annual growth rate was 0.64%. Based on the primary incidence of alcoholism and psychosis the top three districts were: Sudislavsky, Susaninsky and Mezhevskoy, indicators in these areas were almost 2-3 times higher than the average regional index. In 2012 in 12 districts of Kostroma region no cases of alcoholic psychosis were registered. The latter fact is in doubt, as in 7 of 12 districts the positions of addiction psychiatrists were vacant. Over the past 3 years only 38% of patients who required to be treated for alcoholism were admitted for hospital care and 16.7% - for ambulatory care. Conclusion. Analysis of epidemiological data on alcohol situation in the Kostroma region testifies to its stabilization with the trend to improve; established territorial features show the necessity of purposeful planning of preventive measures.

Approximately 64,000,000 people in the United States report binge drinking at least once in the past month. Unlike overeating and oversleeping, “overdrinking”—defined as drinking more than a person intends to drink—does not exist in the literature. Terms such as binge and problem drinking do not consider the intent of the drinker. The results of this pilot study suggest that most people drink more than they intend to drink. Moreover, they also report often being surprised that they overdrank. Smartphones may help overdrinkers be less often surprised by overdrinking and may prevent drinkers from developing an alcohol use disorder.

Electronic cigarettes are at the center of a public health policy debate which leverages scientific publications. This study characterizes e-cigarette publication trends over the past 15 years via a bibliometric analysis. Scopus was searched for “electronic cigarette”, “e-cig”, “e-cigarette”, “vape”, “vaping”, “juul”, or “electronic nicotine delivery system” between 2003–2018. Data included Hirsch index, document type and frequency, and publications by institution, journal, and country. VOSviewer was used to visualize authorship network maps. A total of 4490 e-cigarette publications were identified, most (62.8%) being articles. After 2009, the annual growth rate for e-cigarette publications was the largest in 2014. The annual growth rate was nearly flat in 2017 but increased in 2018. The U.S. produced 51.6% of publications. Annual National Institutes of Health NIH funding for tobacco research mapped closely with the annual volume of e-cigarette publications. Author network analyses illustrated investigator collaborative patterns. The frequency of e-cigarette publications increased significantly in the past decade. A strong relationship of NIH funding for tobacco research and e-cigarette publications demonstrates the importance of e-cigarettes in tobacco research.

Objective The aim of the present study was to determine the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with sepsis admitted to hospitals in Victoria, Australia, during the period 2004–14. The data include incidence, severity and mortality. Methods In all, 44 222 sepsis hospitalisations were identified between 2004–05 and 2013–14 from the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset. The dataset contains clinical and demographic information on all admissions to acute public and private hospitals. Using the International Classification of Diseases (10th Revision) Australian Modification codes, incidence rates, severity of disease and mortality were calculated. Results Sepsis hospitalisation rates per 10 000 population increased significantly (P < 0.01) over the period, from 6.9 (95% confidence interval (CI) 5.6–7.8) to 10.0 (95% CI 9.1–11.1), an annual growth rate of 3.8%. The age-standardised in-hospital death rates per 100 000 population grew significantly (P < 0.01) from 9.2 (95% CI 7.8–10.4) in 2004–05 to 13.0 (95% CI 11.7–14.6) in 2013–14, an annual growth rate of 3.1%. Among people under 45 years of age, the 0–4 years age group had the highest hospitalisation rate (3.0 per 10 000 population; 95% CI 2.7–3.4). Nearly half (46.2%) of all sepsis hospitalisations were among patients born overseas, with a rate of 14.5 per 10 000 population (95% CI 12.4–16.2) in that group compared with a rate of 5.9 per 10 000 population (95% CI 5.3–6.7) for patients born in Australia. The age-standardised sepsis hospitalisation rate was 2.6-fold greater in the lowest compared with highest socioeconomic areas (12.7 per 10 000 population (95% CI 11.2–13.8) vs 4.8 per 10 000 population (95% CI 4.1–5.7), respectively). Conclusion This paper shows a significant upward trend in both sepsis separation rates and in-hospital death rates over the period; unlike sepsis, in-hospital death rates from all diagnoses fell over the same period. The results can be used to stimulate review of clinical practice. Greater understanding of the epidemiology of sepsis could improve care quality and outcomes. What is known about the topic? Sepsis is associated with high mortality rates and severe sepsis is the most common cause of death in intensive care units (ICU). The last published study of sepsis in Victoria (in 2005) showed a gradual rise in rates; since then, there is little information as to whether there has been any significant improvement in treatment outcomes. What does this paper add? This paper provides new information by analysing trends and variations in sepsis hospitalisations in Victoria by several demographic groups from 2004–05 to 2013–14. What are the implications for practitioners? Patients with severe sepsis consume approximately half the ICU resources. Reliable and recent data on the growth of this disease are important for prevention, allocation of resources and to track the effectiveness of care. A key area for intervention is promoting greater adherence to clinical guidelines.

We provide information on prevalence rates of alcohol use and alcohol use disorders, as well as service utilization among persons that present with alcohol abuse or dependence in Mexico. The data were collected in 2001 and 2002 in the Mexican National Comorbidity Survey. The sample design was stratified, using a computerized version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. The response rate was 76.6%, for a total of 5,826 interviews; 86.2% of the population had ever tried alcohol and 43.5% drank in the past 12 months. Lifetime abuse or dependence was reported by 7.6% of the population, and in the past 12 months by 2.0%. Only 30.9% of all respondents with an alcohol use disorder had ever used any treatment service, and then after several years' delay. The low prevalence of service use is a matter of great concern in Mexico. Extension of services, increasing the number of health professionals in this area and more diverse and appropriate treatment programs are urgently needed.

The study has been taken up with the objective of investigating the trends, pattern of growth and the extent of instability in area, production and productivity of rice crop in Andhra Pradesh state over a period of five and half decades from 1959-60 to 2013-14. Compound Growth Rate and Coefficient of Variation were used to calculate the annual growth rate and instability. The area, production and productivity of rice in this period has increased by 25, 201 and 138 per cent respectively. In this period, the districts were categorised and grouped under different groups based on average productivity of rice. During the study period many of the districts moved from very low productivity to high productivity group. During 1960s, 17 districts are under very low productivity group (<1500 kg/ha) and in 2010s 13 districts are under high productivity group (>3000 kg/ha). During the period 2014-19 in the divided Andhra Pradesh contribution of different productivity groups to the states paddy production was calculated and concluded that 3 districts under high productivity group (>6000kg/ha) contributed 52 per cent of the production. During 2010s annual growth rates for area, production and productivity are 4.08, 4.02 and 1.21 respectively. In all the periods in the past five and half decades, production and productivity growth rates are higher than growth rate in area except in 2010s. Instability was higher in production and area than in productivity.  The annual growth rate and the instability of production and area are higher in 2010s. Suitable crop planning is to be initiated, adoption of sustainable management practices are to be intensified to maintain the growth rate and reduce the instability in area and production.

IntroductionThe determining of the actual number of people with mental disorders and their spreading by nosology still remains actual, especially according to different regions.ObjectivesThe determining of the psychiatric services effectiveness in Saratov region on the basis of comprehensive analysis of its’ clinical, statistical and epidemiological characteristics.MethodsThe analysis of mental state indicators based on the example of adults’ schizophrenia Saratov region in dynamics for 10 years (2005–2015) in comparison with Russian Federation.ResultsOver the past 10 years the number of clinically supervised patients with schizophrenia decreased at 0.9% in the city and 2.2% in region population. This is consistent with the tendency of schizophrenia morbidity in Russian Federation over the same period. The number of supervised adult patients with primary diagnosed schizophrenia in Russia remained at the same level and amounted to 10.8 per 100 thousand population. At the same time the noticeable fluctuations in the number of this patients’ category were observed in Saratov and Saratov region. Over the past 10 years, the proportion of patients with primary diagnosed schizophrenia disability in the class structure of mental disorders is quite high, averaging of 41.1% in Saratov region. Analyzing the number of patients with re-confirmed disabilities the gradual decline from 1846 to 755 people (at 59.1%) was found.ConclusionsThe mental health analysis of Saratov region population allows to suggest the long-term forecast of mental disorders’ morbidity, to analyze the level of disability due to schizophrenia, to develop recommendations for the optimal regional model of psychiatric services.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a viewpoint on aligning strategy and execution to produce superior business results. Design/methodology/approach The paper examines the long-term financials of the top ten growers to reveal companies that have continued to grow in good economic times and bad, including the Great Recession. While some companies dug deeper into their core businesses during the financial crisis, others continued to innovate. Findings Where companies continued to focus on strategy execution, they were rewarded, for example, Amazon’s compound annual growth rate for the ten-year period that included the financial crisis was 36.45 per cent; in the past three years, Amazon’s compound annual growth rate (CAGR) has been 56.76 per cent. Most of the top ten long-term growers are headed by the same founder/entrepreneur. Research limitations/implications Look beyond the past three years for models of successful strategy execution. Practical implications For long-term company leaders, entrepreneurs, or turnaround experts, strategic execution is no oxymoron, but a requirement for growth and, ultimately, their unique responsibility. Social implications The paper identifies three major focus areas for strategy teams and company leadership: 1. customer centricity and strategy execution; 2. learning from survivors; and 3. rethinking capabilities and talent. Originality/value As a professor of strategic management and as a consultant to organizations on strategy and marketing transformation, we have focused on the activities that are necessary for leaders to create effective strategy and to execute successfully. We have also been responsible for equipping the larger teams of strategy professionals (and future strategy professionals) who support these leaders with the approaches, the methods, and the tools necessary to plan effectively, to assess effectiveness, and to correct problems in strategy and execution. We bring that perspective to this viewpoint paper.
