A study of northeastern North American spectral moments, magnitudes, and intensities

abstract Thirty-two earthquakes in northeastern North America ranging in seismic moments of 1.5E19 to 6.0E26 (dyne-cm) are used to develop relationships between spectral moment, magnitudes (mbLg and MS), and intensity. It is shown that northeastern North American events are readily characterized by a well-behaved, steadily increasing stress drop relative to increasing magnitude. As a result, the relationship between the regional mbLg and MS as implied by the spectral results is m b L g = M s + 1.2 ( 1.8 ≦ m b L g ≦ 4.4 ) and m b L g = 0 . 6 1 M s + 2.33 ( 4.4 ≦ m b L g ≦ 6.8 ) . Published relationships between the mbLg magnitude, the log10 of the area within the intensity IV isoseismal contour, and the falloff of the intensity technique described by Nuttli (1973b) are checked for suitability. The results are as follows m b L g = 1.13 log 10 ( A I V ) − 0.32 A I V ≧ 10 , 000 k m 2 and m b L g = 0.97 m b ( b a s e d o n f a l l o f f ) + 0.22 , with regression coefficients of 0.94 and 0.99 respectively.

Summary Noam Chomsky’s frequent references to the work of Wilhelm von Humboldt during the 1960s produced a considerable revival of interest in this 19th-century scholar in North America. This paper demonstrates that there has been a long-standing influence of Humboldt’s ideas on American linguistics and that no ‘rediscovery’ was required. Although Humboldt’s first contacts with North-American scholars goes back to 1803, the present paper is confined to the posthumous phase of his influence which begins with the work of Heymann Steinthal (1823–1899) from about 1850 onwards. This was also a time when many young Americans went to Germany to complete their education; for instance William Dwight Whitney (1827–1894) spent several years at the universities of Tübingen and Berlin (1850–1854), and in his writings on general linguistics one can trace Humboldtian ideas. In 1885 Daniel G. Brinton (1837–1899) published an English translation of a manuscript by Humboldt on the structure of the verb in Amerindian languages. A year later Franz Boas (1858–1942) arrived from Berlin soon to establish himself as the foremost anthropologist with a strong interest in native language and culture. From then on we encounter Humboldtian ideas in the work of a number of North American anthropological linguists, most notably in the work of Edward Sapir (1884–1939). This is not only true with regard to matters of language classification and typology but also with regard to the philosophy of language, specifically, the relationship between a particular language structure and the kind of thinking it reflects or determines on the part of its speakers. Humboldtian ideas of ‘linguistic relativity’, enunciated in the writings of Whitney, Brinton, Boas, and others, were subsequently developed further by Sapir’s student Benjamin Lee Whorf (1897–1941). The transmission of the so-called Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis – which still today is attracting interest among cultural anthropologists and social psychologists, not only in North America – is the focus of the remainder of the paper. A general Humboldtian approach to language and culture, it is argued, is still present in the work of Dell Hymes and several of his students.

AbstractThe oribatid family Eremaeidae is represented in North America by two genera, Eremaeus and Eueremaeus, both widely distributed throughout the Palaearctic and Nearctic regions. In North America species in both genera are found in moist to arid habitats from New Mexico to the High Arctic. Reproduction is sexual, and both immatures and adults feed mainly on fungi.Revised diagnoses are presented for the Eremaeidae and genera Eremaeus and Eueremaeus. Eighteen species of Eremaeus, of which 14 are newly proposed, and 24 species of Eueremaeus, of which 15 are newly proposed, are recognized. Identification keys are provided for the world genera of Eremaeidae, and for adults of Eremaeus and Eueremaeus of North America. All but one North American species of these genera are described, and their geographical distributions mapped.North American Eremaeus species include E. appalachicus sp. no v., E. boreomontanus sp. nov., E. brevitarsus (Ewing), E. californiensis sp. nov., E. gracilis sp. nov., E. grandis Hammer, E. kananaskis sp. nov., E. kevani sp. nov., E. megistos sp. nov., E. monticolus sp. nov., E. nortoni sp. nov., E. occidentalis sp. nov., E. oresbios sp. nov., E. plumosus Woolley, E. porosus sp. nov., E. salish sp. nov., E. translamellatus Hammer, and E. walteri sp. nov. Kartoeremaeus reevesi Higgins and Eremaeus politus Banks are considered junior subjective synonyms of Eueremaeus columbianus (Berlese).A cladistic analysis of the genera comprising Eremaeidae: Eremaeus, Tricheremaeus, Eueremaeus (and included species groups), Proteremaeus, Carinabella, and Asperemaeus, indicates that Eremaeus is the sister taxon of Carinabella, and that Eueremaeus is the sister taxon of Proteremaeus. Tricheremaeus is the sister taxon of Eremaeus + Carinabella, and Asperemaeus is the sister taxon of Eueremaeus + Proteremaeus. The relationship of the Eremaeidae to the Megeremaeidae and Zetorchestidae is presented. Finally, I discuss the ecology and distribution of North American species of Eremaeidae.

Most of the genetic diversity of North American alfalfa cultivars has been accounted for by nine germplasm sources listed in descending order of winter hardiness as follows: Medicago sativa ssp. falcata, Ladak, M. sativa ssp. xvaria, Turkistan, Flemish, Chilean, Peruvian, Indian and African. In most instances, the breeder assigns a fall dormancy score and the relative proportions of each of the nine germplasm source for each cultivar at registration. The fall dormancy score (1 = dormant to 9 = non-dormant), determined by measuring plant height in October after harvest in early September, is used to indicate cultivar adaptation for different regions. This study examines the relationship between germplasm composition and plant height, the equivalence of fall dormancy. The signs on the partial regression coefficients of a multiple regression analysis of plant height on the proportional content of the nine sources of germplasm showed that the fall dormancy fell essentially into two classes, namely, a dormant category, comprising cultivars containing a large contribution of Falcata and Ladak, and a non-dormant category, in which Indian and African germplasm predominate. This does not necessarily preclude the influence of any of the other germplasm sources on fall dormancy, since they represent a rich source of diversity. However, nine distinct classes were not recognisable, perhaps because of the lack of an exact equivalence between fall dormancy class and plant height of the fall regrowth. Since these observations have not been derived in a common nursery, the latitude and latitude × cultivar effects have been disregarded. These limitations should be recognized when using the currently assigned fall dormancy ratings to predict cultivar adaptation. Key words: Alfalfa, fall dormancy, sources of germplasm

AbstractMustela macrodon (extinct sea mink) is known only from prehistoric and historic Native American shell middens dating less than 5100 years old along coastal islands of the Gulf of Maine, northeastern North America. The species is distinct from all known extant subspecies of M. vison (American mink) but still belongs to the North American subgenus Vison. Metric comparisons between M. macrodon and five subspecies of M. vison, using skull, mandible, humerus, radius, femur, and tibia skeletal elements, show that M. macrodon is larger in overall size and robustness and is proportionately larger in the dental region. Many habitat-related parallels exist between coastal island mink of the Gulf of Maine and those of the Alexander Archipelago, southeastern Alaska, where the overall largest living subspecies of mink is found (M. v. nesolestes).

Since the 1970s, an apomictic tetraploid beech fern (genus Phegopteris (C. Presl) Fée) has been known in northeastern North America. Previously published isozyme data suggest that this lineage is of allopolyploid origin involving long beech fern (P. connectilis (Michx.) Watt.) but not broad beech fern (P. hexagonoptera (Michx.) Fée), as originally hypothesized. Its second progenitor remains unknown. We performed a principal components analysis of the apomict and its North American congeners to elucidate morphological differences between them. We recognize the apomictic tetraploid at specific rank as P. excelsior N. R. Patel & A. V. Gilman and provide an illustration, a range map, a list of exsiccatae, and a key to Phegopteris species of North America.

The taxonomic status of diploid Salicornia europaea L. (s.l.) in northeastern North America has been evaluated based on morphological and electrophoretic variation within and between populations. Populations of two European diploid micro-species, S. ramosissima J. Woods and S. europaea (s.s.), and populations of the midwestern diploid, S. rubra A. Nels., were also examined, affording a comparison between North American S. europaea (s.l.) and recognized species. Anther length, width of the scarious border of the fertile segment, and floral perianth shape were used to subdivide North American diploid populations into two groups. These groups were morphologically distinct from S. rubra and the European microspecies. The electrophoretic profile was unique in each morphologically distinct group of populations of S. europaea (s.l.) in northeastern North America. Based on morphological, geographical, and electrophoretic differences, diploid populations of S. europaea (s.l.) from this region are assigned to one of the following two new species: S. maritima Wolff & Jefferies, sp.nov., and S. borealis Wolff & Jefferies, sp.nov. The tetraploids are retained in S. europaea (s.l.).

SynopsisSpecies of Isoetes in northeastern North America may have evolved through hybridisation and allopolyploidy. Evidence for natural hybridisation was obtained from overlapping distribution patterns, abortive and polymorphic spore formation, chromosome numbers ranging from diploid to decaploid, and additive enzyme electrophoresis profiles. The ease with which hybrids form in culture supports the hypothesis that natural hybrids occur and that hybridisation could be involved in the evolution of new species.

Most of the published references to Newfoundland caddisflies are derived from one early paper by Nathan Ranks in 1908. Several collections received recently, however, have considerably extended knowledge of the Newfoundland caddisfly fauna. As might be expected, many of the species occurring in Newfoundland also extend across the whole of northern North America, and to some extent southward along the montane areas in both east and west. Some of these also occur throughout the holarctic area. Some of the species are, however, confined to northeastern North America. There are no species of caddisflies now known which are confined to the island of Newfoundland.

This concluding chapter offers a comparative perspective on the key components of contemporary cultural heritage law in North America. The region’s collective tangible and intangible cultural heritage has an array of legal and policy tools to safeguard it for future generations, though coordination between the three nations involved would benefit from increased cohesiveness. The primary legal mechanisms to prevent illicit movement are restrictions on removing archaeological materials; declarations of ownership for some or all of this material; export restrictions; and the ultimate enforcement of these protections both domestically and abroad. All three countries in North America have made this body of law a priority. The chapter then looks at the law enforcement efforts, international outreach, and treatment of specific objects of cultural heritage in Mexico, Canada, and the USA. It also describes the relationship of these North American States with the World Heritage Convention and UNESCO’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Convention.

This exploratory study attempted to replicate previous North American research on workaholism and the relationship of workaholism components proposed by Spence and Robbins to potential antecedents and consequences. Data were obtained from 60 managers and professionals in Istanbul using anonymous questionnaires. These questionnaires contained measures previously used in North America translated into Turkish. Most measures had acceptable internal consistency reliability, and the pattern of findings were generally consistent with previous North American results. However, two of the three measures of workaholism components did not produce acceptable reliabilities, which suggests reconsideration of these specific measures and their items.
