The recent development of education seems to be driven mainly by technology; assigning version numbers is an attempt to tame this development. But education is more complex than buzzwords like “Learning 4.0” may suggest. In this article, we argue for viewing education as a loosely coupled system of two interacting layers, technology and pedagogy: closely connected, but not glued together. Using several examples, we show that sometimes technological innovations trigger pedagogical innovations and sometimes pedagogical needs initiate the development of technological solutions. We intend the model of loosely coupled layers of technology and pedagogy as a starting point for opening an overdue discussion on how to make the best use of technology for teaching and learning. We argue that complementing technology with established and proven principles of situated contextualized pedagogy is a key element for the future development of education.

To inform the future development of a pan-Canadian Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) performance measurement framework, we undertook a review and comparison of current provincial/territorial MHA policies and performance measurement frameworks. Most did not have performance measurement approaches that were explicitly linked to policy actions but eleven acknowledged the importance of performance measurement. Among the provinces with a framework, there were few performance domains in common. The common policy priorities and areas of convergence in current performance measurement practices may provide a useful starting point for the development of a pan-Canadian MHA performance measurement framework.

This chapter addresses the future of online learning and online learning technologies in higher education. Our understanding of the use of future technologies can be aided by a better understanding of how we have addressed the use of technologies in our past and in our present. A brief history of the use of technology in teaching and learning serves as a catalyst for a discussion of the near term, mid-range and far term technologies and possible issues associated with them. The authors propose that keeping the focus on human learning instead of specific tools will help higher education take full advantage of online learning in the near and far term future.

This cross-sectional study examined primary and secondary teachers’ and students’ views regarding technology integration into teaching and learning in Muscat, Oman. The target group consisted of teachers (N=44) and students (N=219) from two bilingual and two international schools in Oman. Results showed that the majority of students use technology to do projects and research. Both teachers and students enjoy the use of technology in teaching and learning, they feel competent in using it and they similarly evaluate the effectiveness of available technologies. Although the majority of teachers agreed that teaching has become easier and faster with technology, only a small percentage integrates technology into teaching. Factors hindering technology integration concern curriculum design, network issues, time constraint and other. In theory, the study contributes to our understanding of the reasons why teachers’ and students’ find it challenging to use technological innovations in school. Methodologically, this study provides the basis for examining Technological Pedagogical Knowledge in certain socio-geographical contexts. In practice, the study provides educational authorities with suggestions on how technology can be used to support, enhance and extend the curriculum.

This article looks into the specifics of teaching in these challenging times, particularly after the outbreak of the Covid pandemics early in 2020 and the lockdown that followed, which forced the general migration of teaching into online. Teaching with the use of technology, already in high demand worldwide, has soared during this period, having its detractors as well as its committed followers. The article looks into recent research on how technology impacts the learning process and how this might develop in the future, influencing teachers, students, campus-based teaching and education in general in the following years. There are obviously minuses and pluses to online teaching and learning; this article will discuss some of them, with practical examples and information from the particular context of higher education teaching in Romania.

AbstractThe widespread use of technology in the digital age continually shapes how individuals consume knowledge and learn. In the digital age, ideas are shared and represented in multiple formats and through the integration of multiple modes. Technological advances, coupled with considerations of the changing needs of today’s learners, call for exploring new directions for multimodal teaching and learning. Yet, society’s increasing reliance on, and use of, technologies for communication and learning has introduced expanded forms of meaning-making. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the online networks that are facilitated by their use encourage educators to transform the way education is delivered. Learning environments are in need of becoming transformed so students are able to use immersive technologies to expand their learning opportunities. This chapter explores emerging trends and pedagogies in multimodal learning that seek to take advantage of the digital tools, texts, and learning approaches that are continually shaping the ways learning occurs inside and outside of higher education.This chapter is outlined to highlight what is found in the literature on multimodal instruction, what findings were realized at eXploring the Future of Innovative Learning Environments (X-FILEs) workshops, and lastly how multimodal instruction can be used to transform the classroom of the future. Throughout this chapter, readers will get to know a student of the future, Juan Delgado. He attends a 4-year university in Dallas, Texas, and is majoring in Mechanical Engineering taking his Introduction to the Fundamentals of Science course. Each aspect of the learning process as it relates to multimodal instruction in 2023 is outlined through the experiences of Juan to situate the impact to learners.

In 2016 the 3M National Teaching Fellowship reached a milestone in celebrating the 30th anniversary of the first fellowship in 1986. The fellowship is the premier award of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and each year up to 10 fellows are announced. Thus far, there has not been a systematic review or evaluation of the fellowship program. This study is a starting point to engage the various stakeholders and gather their perspectives regarding the fellowship program. This paper highlights the findings of a national questionnaire that targeted 3M National Teaching Fellows, administrators, educational developers, faculty, and students. The findings provide a snapshot of the awareness of the fellowship, the impact of fellows on their institutions and beyond, and recommendations for the future of the program.

This paper explores the development of a model for international collaborative writing groups (ICWGs) about teaching and learning in higher education, which began in geography in 1999 and was then transferred to the scholarship of teaching and learning community in 2012. It summarises some of the evidence which has emerged from research into the experience of participants in ICWGs. The paper ends with a few comments on the future development of the model. Dans cet article, l’auteur explore le développement d’un modèle de groupes internationaux de rédaction en collaboration portant sur l’enseignement et l’apprentissage dans l’enseignement supérieur, qui a vu le jour en géographie en 1999 et qui, plus tard, en 2012, a été transféré à la communauté de l’avancement des connaissances en enseignement et en apprentissage. L’auteur présente un résumé d’un certain nombre de preuves qui ont résulté de la recherche sur l’expérience vécue par les participants à ces groupes internationaux de rédaction. En conclusion, l’auteur présente quelques commentaires sur le développement futur de ce modèle.

The article examines the state of the Holocaust historiography in Ukraine for the period of 2010 – beginning of 2014. The review analyzes activities of major research and educational organizations in Ukraine which have significant part of projects devoted to the Holocaust; main publications and discussions on the Holocaust in Ukraine, including publications of Ukrainian authors in academic European and American journals. The article illustrates contemporary tendencies and conditions of the Holocaust Studies in Ukraine, defines major problems and shows perspectives of the future development of the Holocaust historiography in Ukraine.
