AbstractLittle information is available about the optical behavior of glass ceramics and indirect resin composites. This study aimed to evaluate if an indirect resin composite can present similar behavior of color stability and translucency to a glass ceramic after polishing and aging in staining beverage. Specimens of a dental ceramic (IPS e.max Ceram) and an indirect resin composite (SR Adoro) were made. Half the specimens of each material were polished with disc-shaped tips. Groups were divided according to aging media: distilled water or immersion in red wine for 20 min/day during 30 days. CIE L*a*b* coordinates were measured with a spectrophotometer at baseline and after 30 days of aging. Color change was calculated by CIEDE2000 and translucency was calculated by contrast ratio (CR). Statistical analysis were performed with ANOVA and Tukey tests. Aging in red wine caused perceptible color change in both materials. Polishing only increased color change of indirect composite when aged in red wine. Ceramic groups showed greater opacity than the composite in all measurements. The indirect composite remained more translucent and results showed that it is capable of presenting color stability similar to a ceramic. Dental Polishing. ResumoPouca informação comparando o comportamento óptico de cerâmicas vítreas e resinas compostas indiretas estão disponíveis na literatura. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar se uma resina composta indireta pode apresentar comportamento semelhante a uma cerâmica vítrea em relação à estabilidade de cor e translucidez após polimento e envelhecimento em meio altamente pigmentante. Espécimes de uma cerâmica vítrea (IPS e.max Ceram) e uma resina composta indireta (SR Adoro) foram preparados. Metade dos espécimes de cada material foram polidas com pontas de polimento. Os grupos foram divididos conforme o meio de armazenamento: água destilada ou vinho tinto por 20 min/dia durante 30 dias. As coordenadas CIEL*a*b* foram medidas com espectrofotômetro previamente e após os 30 dias de armazenamento. A alteração de cor foi calculada pela equação CIEDE2000 e a translucidez foi calculada por razão de contraste. A análise estatística foi realizada pelos testes ANOVA e teste de Tukey. O armazenamento em vinho levou a uma alteração de cor perceptível nos dois materiais. O polimento apenas causou alteração de cor na resina composta indireta quando imersa em vinho tinto. A resina composta indireta manteve-se mais translúcida e os resultados mostraram que esse material é capaz de apresentar estabilidade de cor semelhante à cerâmica. <p><strong>Objective: </strong>To evaluate if alcoholic beverages can cause color change in composite resins, if the alcoholic concentration influences this variation besides analyzing within the composite resins tested, which would present greater color stability when subjected to the experiment. <strong>Material and Methods: </strong>90 specimens of three different composite resins (IPS Empress Direct, Grandio®So and Filtek Z350 XT) were immersed in distilled water (control group), red wine and vodka. The samples were 2 mm thick and 8 mm in diameter, photopolymerized for 20 s on each side, polished with sandpaper, silicon carbide tip and felt disc with prophylactic paste and immersed in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h prior to subgrouping. For the evaluation of the color variation, the formula prioritized by the CIEL *a *b* system was used. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey’s test at 95% significance. <strong>Results: </strong>The lowest variations occurred with the Grandio®So resin when exposed to wine, and Filtek Z350 XT when exposed to vodka. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in water (p &lt; 0.01) and in red wine (p &lt; 0.01), but not in vodka (p &gt; 0.05). The soaking medium that most caused staining was red wine. <strong>Conclusion: </strong>Red wine was the drink that generated the highest staining in all the resins tested, vodka did not change color stability significantly, the alcoholic concentrations tested did not directly influence the color change and the composite resin Grandio®So presented greater color stability when exposed to red wine.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Keywords</strong></p><p>Alcoholic beverage; Color; Composite resin.</p><p> </p><p>KEY WORDS: Alcoholic beverage, color, composite resin.</p>

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a bleaching agent on the color of extrinsically pigmented indirect composite resins. Samples of five resins (Adoro, Resilab, Cristobal, Sinfony, Epricord) were manufactured and divided into five groups: red wine, coffee, orange juice, Coca-Cola, and artificial saliva (control). The stained samples were immersed in a 38% hydrogen peroxide solution for 30 min per week, over three weeks. Color readings were performed at the initial state (L0), after 21 days of dye immersion (ΔE1, L1), and after 7 (ΔE2, L2), 14 (ΔE3, L3), and 21 days (ΔE4, L4) of bleach immersion. Data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) test (α = 0.05). The color alteration was greater in ΔE1, regardless of color solution, indicating extrinsic pigmentation. The Resilab group exhibited greater ΔE1 values than the other resins. The bleaching agent promoted bleaching action on the surfaces of the materials studied, removing the previously impregnated pigments.

ABSTRACT Background Consumption of certain beverages may affect the esthetic and physical properties of the resin composite, thereby undermining the quality of restorations. Aim To analyze the effect of three beverages (cola, coffee, tea) on color stability and surface roughness of three different types of resin composites at various time intervals in vitro. Materials and methods Nano, microhybrid and hybrid resin composites were used. Each material was randomly divided into four equal subgroups of 10 samples each according to the beverages used (cola, coffee, tea, distilled water). The samples were immersed in each beverage for 1, 15 and 30 days. Surface roughness and color changes measurements were noted at the baseline—the first, fifteenth and thirteenth day. Results It was found that nanoresin composite followed by microhybrid and hybrid showed least surface roughness and color change. The Coke beverage subgroup showed more surface roughness and the subgroup coffee has shown more color changes with respect to other subgroups. Conclusion All specimens showed discoloration after completion of the test period which was visually perceptible and clinically unacceptable. At the end of 30th day, among the materials, nanofilled composite resin showed comparatively less surface roughness and color change than microhybrid and hybrid composite resins. ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the effect of Arabic coffee, Turkish coffee and Nescafe on the color stability of four different composite resins after a period of aging time 1, 7 and 30 days. Materials and methods Twenty specimens from each type of tested composite resin material were prepared. Five specimens from each tested material (Z350 XT, Artist, GC and Z250) was evaluated after storage in Arabic coffee, Turkish coffee, Nescafe and distil water (control) at 37°C in a dark container for 1, 7 and 30 days. Color measurement was done using colorimeter based on the CIE L* a* b* color scale. Color differences ΔE*ab, Δb* and Δa* among specimens immersed in distil water and staining coffee beverages were evaluated overtime. Mean values were statistically analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey test with p < 0.05 as significance level. Results All tested composite resins showed increase color change after a period of 1, 7 and 30 days. The color change ΔE*ab, Δb* and Δa* exhibited by Arabic coffee, in Turkish coffee and Nescafe except Δa*. The highest total color difference ΔE*ab after 30 days was in group A Arabic coffee (ΔE > 1.5 perceivable) and not perceivable in group B Turkish coffee and group C Nescafe. For Δb* all materials discolored toward yellowness after 30 days except Arabic coffee group which shifted from yellowness toward blueness (Δb*> 1.5 perceivable). Conclusion The effect of staining beverages on the resin composite materials increases with time of aging toward yellowness and not perceivable in all groups except with Arabic coffee which had highest effect after 30 days and the discoloration shifted from yellowness to blueness perceivable. Abstract Objectives This study aimed to assess the effect of an optical whitening toothpaste on color stability of microhybrid, nanofilled, and microfilled composite resins and resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) cement in comparison of two other toothpastes. Materials and Methods In this experimental study, disc-shaped composite samples were fabricated. The samples were then polished using silicon carbide papers. Twenty-seven samples of each material were fabricated and subjected to colorimetry using a spectrophotometer. Each group of material was then divided into three subgroups for the application of conventional whitening and whitening containing blue covarine toothpastes. One operator brushed the samples with an electric soft toothbrush with circular motion twice a day, each time for 30 seconds. Colorimetry was performed at 0, 1, 7, 30, and 90 days. Statistical Analysis Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), one-way ANOVA, and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) test were used for statistical analysis. Results The interaction effect of type of restorative material and time on ∆E was not significant at baseline or 1 day (p > 0.05). The effect of type of toothpaste on ∆E was not significant at baseline or 1 day (p = 0.78) but the effect of type of material was significant (p < 0.05). The toothpastes had significantly different effects on ∆E of Z250 at all time points (p < 0.05) except for ∆E0–30 (p = 0.106). The toothpastes had significantly different effects on ∆E of Z350 and Gradia at all time points (p < 0.05). The same was true for RMGI except for ∆E0–7 (p = 0.43) and ∆E0–90 (p = 0.52). The majority of color changes caused by toothpastes were not clinically perceivable (∆E < 3.3), except for ∆E0–90 by the whitening toothpaste (∆E = 9), ∆E0–90 by the conventional toothpaste for Z350 (∆E = 3.9), and ∆E0–1 by the whitening toothpaste for RMGI (∆E = 3.7). Conclusion The color change of all composite samples was not clinically perceivable (<3.3) at all time points, which shows that the tested toothpastes do not cause a significant change in color of composite materials.

Objective: The aesthetics of dental materials is extremely important for the success of oral rehabilitation. Thus, in the present study we evaluated the color stability and the surface degradation of three micro hybrid composite resins after accelerated artificial aging process (AAA). Methods: Were prepared 24 specimens (n=8) for each material: Solidex, Artglass and Cesead, dimensions of Ø 15 mm by 2 mm in thickness. The samples were subjected to color analysis, before and after AAA, in a spectrophotometer according to the CIE L*a*b* parameters, and a sample of each material, was selected for morphological evaluation under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data were submitted to one-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α=0.05). Results: Artglass showed higher stability regarding the presence of red and yellow (p<0.05) when subjected to the AAA and fewer of these pigments (p<0.05) when compared to the Cesead and Solidex, which showed the highest luminance stability (p<0.05). ΔE Cesead was the most unstable (p<0.05). All resins analyzed by SEM showed superficial degradation when submitted to the AAA, mainly in resin Cesead. Conclusion: All materials analyzed demonstrate color change and surface degradation, Cesead resin showed the worse results.

Heat-cured denture base resin is an important component in removable partial dentures and complete dentures, and has been widely used in the clinic. However, during long-term use, its appearance may be affected by varying degrees of color change, affecting the appearance and longevity of the dentures. In this study we examined the color changes and water absorption and solubility of dental base resins to investigate the color stability of four types of resin materials: New Century, Heraeus, Nissin and BASIS-HI. They were soaked in artificial saliva (as control), red wine, cola, coffee and tea separately at 37°C for 1, 4 or 12 weeks. Results are presented on which the color changes of dental base resin materials were associated with different denture base resins, soak solutions and storage times. We found that most of the dental resins became darker at prolonged immersion time. Heraeus resins showed more significant changes after soaking in red wine for 12 weeks, and its water absorption and solubility values were also greater than those of the other three types of resins. The color changes of New Century, Nissin and BASIS-HI soaked in the four solutions were relatively stable. The information obtained here will help optimize maintenance of dentures and also inform choice of denture materials.

SUMMARY In this laboratory study, a composite resin was stained to a visibly discernible level using both coffee and red wine over 14 days (change was considered clinically noticeable and significant when ΔEab*≥2.7). Color change was measured at one, three, seven, and 14 days of staining. Although the nature of color change was different for the two staining solutions, the overall degree of staining (ΔEab*) rendered by either coffee or wine at each time interval was not significantly different (p≥0.05). Four whitening protocols were applied to stained composites. Treatment included applications of distilled water (control), Crest Pro-Health [HD] toothpaste, Crest Whitestrips, Opalescence PF bleach (15%), and application of a fine pumice polishing (Preppies). HD toothpaste and Whitestrips were applied daily for 21 days, Opalescence was applied daily for 10 days, and polishing was applied once. Each of the whitening products, applied in a manner simulating at-home or in-office treatment, was effective in producing color improvements (lightening) over controls (p&lt;0.05), but none of the four treatments produced lightening that was significantly different from the other treatments (p≥0.05). A comparison of final composite color with that measured at baseline showed that Opalescence returned composite color to an acceptable level following exposure to both staining solutions (ΔEab*&lt;2.7), Whitestrips returned color close to baseline for wine-stained composites, and HD paste and polishing permitted residual stain to remain (ΔEab*≥2.7).

Abstract: Dentifrice abrasiveness and brushing time may increase color change (∆E) and surface roughness (∆Ra) of resin composites. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mechanical brushing time of dentifrices with different abrasiveness on ∆E and ∆Ra of nanofilled (Z350, 3M ESPE) and nanohybrid (Tetric N-Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent) resin composites. Sixteen specimens (12 mm diameter x 2 mm thick) were fabricated using a white Teflon matrix of each resin composite and a ceramic (IPS e.max Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent), used as control. After initial color readouts on white backgrounds (Spectrophotometer PCB 6807, Byk Gardner), with D65 standard illuminant, and surface roughness (Rugosimeter Surfcorder SE 1700, Kosalab) with cut-off=0.8 mm and speed=0.25 mm/s, specimens were assigned (n=8) according to the abrasiveness of the dentifrices: RDA* 68 (Colgate) and RDA* 180 (Colgate Total Plus Whitening). Specimens were submitted to mechanical brushing (58,400 cycles) and after every 14,600 cycles (1 year of brushing by a healthy individual), new color and surface roughness readouts were taken. Color stability was calculated by CIEDE2000. Data were analyzed by 3-way repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni test (p<0.05), and demonstrated that the dentifrice abrasiveness (p=0.02) and brushing time (p<0.0001) affected the ∆E of nanofilled resin composite. There was no difference on surface roughness of materials (p=0.6752) or brushing time (p=0.7997). In conclusion, the longer the brushing time and dentifrice abrasiveness, the greater the color change of the nanofilled resin composite. The surface roughness was not influenced by dentifrice abrasiveness.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to evaluate the color stability and the surface roughness of different composites brushed with toothpastes presenting different levels of abrasivity. Thirty discs of each material were obtained using michohybrid composites (Brilliant NG and Charisma Diamond) and a nanocomposite (Filtek Z350XT). The initial color (CIELab) and surface roughness (confocal laser scanning microscopy) of resin discs were evaluated. Afterwards, 10 specimens per group were brushed with the following dentifrices: Maximum Cavity Protection, Sensodyne Repair & Protect and Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief. Brushing was performed with an electric toothbrush equipped with soft bristle head, with standard power and weight, for 30 minutes. Every 30 seconds, 1.0 ml of the slurry was injected between the bristles of the brush and the specimen. After abrasive challenge, the samples had their color and roughness reevaluated. Data were submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis test (color change) or the t-test (surface roughness). The level of significance was 5%. Results: Brushing did not significantly change the color of the composites tested in the study herein . On the other hand, the surface roughness of the composites was significantly affected by the abrasive challenge, regardless of the toothpaste used. The surface roughness change was similar for all the composites. The abrasive challenge with the toothpastes Maximum Cavity protection, Sensodyne Repair & Protect and Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief was not able to significantly change the color of the composite resins. Nevertheless, the abrasive challenges significantly altered the surface roughness of all the evaluated composites. However, the changes in surface roughness were statistically similar in the microhybrid and nanofilled composites. Keywords: Composites Resins. Dentifrices. Color. A cor inicial (CIELab) e a rugosidade superficial (microscopia confocal de varredura a laser) dos discos de resina foram avaliadas. Em seguida, 10 amostras por grupo foram escovadas com os dentifrícios Máxima Proteção Anticáries, Sensodyne Repair & Protect e Colgate Sensitive Pro-Alívio. A escovação foi realizada com uma escova elétrica com cabeça de cerdas macias, com potência e peso padronizados, durante 30 minutos. A cada 30 segundos, 1,0 ml da pasta era injetada entre as cerdas da escova e a amostra. Após o desafio abrasivo, as amostras tiveram sua cor e rugosidade reavaliadas. Os dados foram submetidos ao teste de Kruskal-Wallis (alteração de cor) ou ao teste t (rugosidade da superfície) (α=5%). A escovação não alterou significativamente a cor dos compósitos. Por outro lado, a rugosidade superficial dos compósitos foi significativamente afetada pelo desafio abrasivo, independentemente do dentifrício utilizado. A alteração da rugosidade superficial foi semelhante para todos os compósitos. O desafio abrasivo com a Máxima Proteção Anticáries, o Sensodyne Repair & Protect e o Colgate Sensitive Pro-Alívio não foi capaz de alterar significativamente a cor das resinas. Diferentemente, os desafios abrasivos alteraram significativamente a rugosidade superficial de todos os compósitos avaliados.
