Abstract: The use of technology in language learning has improved the development of educational products. Related to reading, it makes reading materials is not limited to printed-text only. The Mobile-assisted Language Learning (MALL) makes smartphones have big impact on education since it can be used as a device to access variety of technology-based learning materials. In such a way, the development of learning materials that can be accessed from a smartphone is highly needed. Thus, the need for accessible learning materials from a smartphone is crucial to students, especially during the situation where online learning must be carried out. Since students must do distance learning with teachers, smartphone application can be an additional material that can accommodate students to learn independently. The current study is conducted to develop a smartphone application prototype to support the benefit of technology to the practice of English Language Teaching in Indonesia. The R&D model of Borg & Gall (2003) was used to develop this digital supplementary reading material in the form of a smartphone application prototype. The first final product of this study is a smartphone application named ‘Seeds’ that has implemented the three-phase reading technique. Besides, it consists of three different titles of descriptive text added with different forms of reading activities. The product is also supported with additional features like pop-up glossary, re-reading, show-score, and share-score. The second product is the e-manual book in the form of .pdf where it is written in English and Indonesian. Keywords: Mobile-assisted Language Learning (MALL), supplementary reading materials, Research & Development Abstrak: Penerapan teknologi pada pembelajaran bahasa telah menciptakan perubahan pada pengembangan bahan ajar.

With the advancement in technological tools and devices, language teachers can foster learning of communication skills through mobile devices. There is a growing interest among students to use the latest gadgets for getting connected with their peers. It must be admitted that the usage of these devices would bring in a real revolution in the teaching and learning process. It has been widely accepted that mobile learning promotes students' active participation. Teachers also now understand that one of their responsibilities is to create more opportunities to make their students practice language skills. Although numerous researches has been done in the field of English Language Teaching in India, research on mobile assisted language learning is still in an infancy stage. In this chapter, the author discusses the possibility of offering training through mobile apps, based on research she conducted recently.

Technology-assisted facilities have taken English Language Teaching (ELT) to a different level where Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has become an indispensable feature of leaning a language. Recently, in the current day context of ELT, both learners and teachers are experiencing a positive shift from CALL to another more efficient platform called Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). This paper explores the fundamentals of MALL and its application in ELT. Moreover, it sheds light on the various advantages and limitations in implementing MALL devices like mobile phones, smartphones, kindles and so on in the regular as well as virtual classroom context. It discusses theories on technology-enabled learning and MALL. The primary focus of this paper is to shed light on the perspective of employing MALL in the language classes at the tertiary level.

This article reports key findings of a study which investigated the use of technology by 569 ‘digital natives' students for English Language learning and recreational purposes. Their views on the applicability of technological tools such as facebook, blogging and skype for English Language teaching and learning were also investigated. The findings showed that although the students expressed positive views with regard to the use of technologies for language learning, they seemed to use less technological tools for academic learning than for recreational purposes. Discipline differences were not a determining factor. In addition, they appeared to use similar well-established technologies rather than new and emerging technologies for both learning and recreation. Finally, they also appeared satisfied with their English instructors' teaching approaches.

Technology has been widely used in the education field, especially for teaching language. Many teachers and students believe in the advantages of technology to enhance language learning. There have been many studies investigating the use of technology in secondary language classrooms. Some studies approve that technology can be applied to increase students' language competence. This paper comprehensively analysed the use of technology for English language teaching in the secondary level based on empirical studies. It reviews 57 articles from reputable journals and publishers. The existing literature shows that studying and reviewing the use of technology in ELT leads to a deeper understanding of its potential benefits. Many technology tools have been utilized to support the teaching of English skills. Kinds of learning activities that require technological tools and applications, such as presentation, discussion, assessment are also discussed. Additionally, problems and solutions encountered in the implementation of technology in secondary ELT levels are scrutinized in this study. HIGHLIGTS: Scholars need to set the content and pedagogy first before the technology to obtain meaningful and contextual experiments and discussion in academic circumstances. The finding unveils a fact that technology use in the ELT context contributes more to students' learning strategies, such as learning motivation, engagement, collaborative work, rather than the improvement of students' learning outcomes. This finding can be a rationale to rectify the common logical fallacy encountered among studies that claimed that technology can improve particular language skill.

The study concerns the attitudes towards Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) of the participants in a university. Using the mixed-method research design with survey questionnaire as the main data collection tool, the research gained some significant findings and successfully met the aims of the study. The findings from both qualitative and quantitative data reveal that the participants basically held positive attitudes towards the use of MALL inside classroom and towards MALL in general. It is suggested that MALL be adopted as a new approach in English language teaching and learning. Moreover, some measures should be taken to develop the digital literacy of both instructors and learners.
