Background: Antimicrobials are used for prophylaxis and treatment of infections which occur following surgical procedures, to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with surgical site infections (SSIs). A surgical site infection is an infection that occurs after surgery in the part of the body where the surgery took place. These are infections of the tissues, organs, or spaces exposed by surgeons during performance of an invasive procedure.Methods: A prospective, non-interventional, observational study in tertiary care hospital for duration of 9 months. Sample size was 330.Results: The prescription pattern shows that nitroimidazoles were the most commonly prescribed group of antimicrobials in 72% of patients followed by penicillins (58%) and cephalosporins (42%). Metronidazole (72%), amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (51.21%) ceftriaxone (20.90%) were most commonly prescribed antimicrobials in these groups. Two antimicrobials were prescribed in 47% patients with nitroimidazole and penicillins being the most commonly prescribed combination of antimicrobial. Three antimicrobials were prescribed in 25% patients and four antimicrobials in 8% patients. This shows trend towards polypharmacy. About 82% of antimicrobials were prescribed by brand names and 64% of total antimicrobials prescribed from outside the hospital pharmacy source. About 12.42% of patients changed antimicrobial therapy after culture and sensitivity report.Conclusions: Total duration, number of anti-microbial used was more in clean-contaminated, contaminated, dirty wound surgeries as compare to clean wound surgeries. Our study provides a framework for continuous prescription audit of antimicrobials in a hospital setting and thus can help in rational use of antimicrobials in post-operative surgical patients.

Surgical site infection (SSI) is the third most common nosocomial infection. According to CDC’s National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance system 38% of all nosocomial infections in surgical patients are surgical site infections (SSI).1 They have been responsible for the increasing cost, morbidity and mortality related to surgical operations .Even in hospitals, with modern facilities and following standard protocols of pre operative preparation and antibiotic prophylaxis, SSI continues to be a major problem

Paederus dermatitis is a form of irritant contact dermatitis due to contact with certain insects of the genus Paederus presenting with mostly erythematous linear lesions of sudden onset on exposed parts of the body. To study the clinico epi Aim: demiological features in patients with Paederus dermatitis. A retrospective analysis of clinicoepidemiological Materials & Methods: features of patients affected with Paederus dermatitis who had attended the Dermatology OPD, in a tertiary care hospital between January 2018 to December 2019 was done. All the required data had been collected from the OPD records and details were tabulated and analysed. A total of 56 patients had been affected with Result: Paederus dermatitis during the study period, of which 32 were males and 24 were females. 41out of 56 (73.21%) of patients presented between the months of August and December. Most common age group affected were between 11 to 30 yrs, with front and back of neck being the most common affected sites. In 42 out of the 56 patients the lesions resolved with post inammatory hyperpigmentation. Conclusion: Paederus dermatitis is a common condition that is often misdiagnosed and hence awareness is required for the clinicians and the general public to prevent it.

Background: The gap in the knowledge of interns between brand names, generic name and indication of a drug can lead to unwanted clinical consequences. This study was conducted to assess the knowledge of interns at a tertiary care hospital regarding the generic name and indications of the routinely prescribed brand names of drugs.Methods: In this study, interns were required to write whether they prescribed the brand names mentioned in the questionnaire in the preceding six months, their generic name and the indication for their use. Results were expressed using descriptive statistics.Results: All brands except Zovobact SB was prescribed by more than 50% of interns in the preceding six months. The generic equivalents were correctly identified by good percentage of interns for Hicet (100%), Asthalin (95%), Cifran (90%) but the percentage of correct answers was low for other brands. For combination brands, correct generic names of all components were identified by more than 50% of interns for oflox TZ (93%), Septid D (68%) and Losar H (68%). The percentage of correct response for the indication of the brands was satisfactory for Hicet (100%), Asthalin (98%), Cifran (98%), Zerodol P (100%), Cyclopam (100%), oflox TZ (100%), Losar H (98%), Septid D (98%) but was inadequate for Taxim O (48%), Betaloc (33%), Valium (23%), Diamox (0%), Quadriderm (31%) and Zovobact SB (31%).Conclusions: This study identified lacunas in the knowledge of interns regarding generic equivalents and indications of brand names. Strategies to overcome the problem should be devised to ensure patient safety.

Background: The expanding and challenging eld of psychopharmacology is constantly seeking new and improved drugs to treat psychiatric disorders. Psychotropic drugs utilization in actual clinical practice, effectiveness and safety in the real-life situation needs continuous study. Therefore, the study was undertaken to analyze the prescription pattern of psychotropic drugs. Methods: A Cross sectional study was conducted in the psychiatry out-patient department of a tertiary care hospital for 4 months. Diagnosis was made according to ICD-10 criteria. Prescription pattern was analyzed using World Health Organization (WHO) drug indicators. Results: Psychotropic drugs constituted 74.85% of the prescribed medication. Average number of the psychotropic drugs per prescription was 2.53. Percentage of prescriptions with injectable drugs accounted for 5.13%. 59.28% of the drugs were prescribed by generic names, while the rest were branded. 28% of prescriptions contained psychotropic FDCs (Fixed dose th combination). 78.65% of the drugs were from the WHO's 18 List of Essential Medicines. Among the total psychotropic drugs prescribed, antipsychotics (43.87%) were the most commonly prescribed class of drugs followed by antidepressants (23.32%), anxiolytics (22.13%) and the mood stabilizers (9.88%) were the least. Conclusions: Prescription pattern of the psychotropic drugs were in accordance to the recommendations of various treatment guidelines. Antipsychotics were the most commonly prescribed psychotropic drugs.
