Background: Seizures are the most common pediatric neurological disorder. The objectives were to know the prevalence and types of intracranial structural lesions diagnosed by Computed Tomography in children with unprovoked seizures.Methods: It is hospital based cross-sectional study done in Patna Medical College, India from August 2005- July 2007. All patients aged 6 months to 12 years admitted in pediatrics department with at least 2 episodes of unprovoked seizures were undergone Computed Tomography brain.Results: Out of total 112 patients admitted, 66.1% had abnormal CT scan. Prevalence of abnormal CT scan increased with advancing age and significant, with maximum percentage found in age group 10-12 years (43.2%). Males had more seizures and intracranial lesion than females but this association was statistically non-significant. 65.2% had generalized seizure and 34.8% had partial seizure. Among patients with abnormal CT scan, generalized seizure (70.3%) and partial seizure (29.7%).The commonest  probable diagnosis was tuberculoma (47.3%) followed by neurocysticercosis (25.7%) and brain abscess (4%). Other were atrophy, gliosis and hydrocephalus, 2.5% each; arachnoid cyst, extradural hematoma, sturge weber syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, infarct, hemiatrophy, caudate lobe hemorrhage, basal ganglia calcification, corpous callosum agenesis, 1.35% each.Conclusions: Inflammatory granuloma is the leading cause of unprovoked seizure in this part of the country. Every seizure case should undergo a CT scan examination. Preventive measures can be applied for tuberculoma and NCC so as to lower down the burden of seizure disorder.

Background: About 5-10% of the population get at least one seizure in their lifetime. Treatment is started in patients with first unprovoked seizure if the risk of seizure recurrence is predicted to be high. If patients with first seizure are not treated 40-50% of patients develop recurrence within 2 years of the initial seizure. Starting treatment may cause reduction in the risk of recurrence by almost one half. The aim of the study was to identify the factors causing recurrence in patients with first unprovoked seizure. Materials and Methods: It is a prospective cross-sectional study conducted at Nobel Medical College from March 2015 to March 2019. Patients who presented to Nobel Medical College with first unprovoked seizure were enrolled in the study with follow up during the hospital visit. Results: Eighty six patients participated in our study. Recurrence of seizure occurred in 21(24.4%) patients within the study period of 4 years. Abnormal Electroencephalography was significantly associated with recurrence of seizure in patients with first seizure. (P value<0.001) Neuro imaging abnormality was also associated with increased risk of seizure recurrence (Pvalue<0.001) .Starting an antiepileptic after first seizure reduced the risk of further seizure. Conclusion: Recurrence of seizure was observed in almost a quarter of patients within the study period of four years. Recurrence risk was higher in those patients with abnormal Electro encephalography and in those patients with identified cause than those patients whose seizure was assumed to be idiopathic.

Background: CT-scan is useful for the detection of hepatic mass. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to see the predictive values of CT scan in the diagnosis of malignant hepatic mass. Methodology: This cross sectional study was carried out in the Department of Radiology and Imaging at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), Mymensingh, Banghabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka and Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Dhaka during the period of 1st January 2006 to 31st December 2007. Patients admitted in the Department of Medicine and Department of Hepatobiliary of MMCH, BSMMU, and DMCH with the clinical diagnosis of fever, abdominal pain, anorexia, nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, jaundice, weight loss and ascites were selected as study population. CT scan and histopathology were performed to all the patients. Result: A total number of 50 patients were recruited for this study.. The sensitivity for multiplicity was 71.4%, specificity was 63.6%, accuracy was 68%, PPV was 71.4% and NPV was 63.6%. The sensitivity for hypodensity as a sign of malignancy was 60.7%, specificity was 18.2%, accuracy was 42.0%, PPV was 48.6% and NPV was 26.7%. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy of contrast enhancement were 100.0%, 22.7%, 62.2%, 100.0% and 66.0% respectively. Again the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy of detection of pressure effect on biliary apparatus by CT-scan were 100.0%, 22.7%, 62.2%, 100.0% and 66.0% respectively. Again the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy of detection of Lymphadenopathy by CT-scan were 35.7%, 95.5%, 90.9%, 53.8% and 62.0% respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy of detection of Portal vein invasion by CT-scan were 14.3%, 100.0%, 100.0%, 47.8% and 52.0% respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy of detection of hepatic vein invasion by CT-scan were 10.7%, 100.0%, 100.0%, 46.8% and 50.0% respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy of detection of inferior vena cava (IVC) invasion by CT-scan were 7.1%, 100.0%, 100.0%, 45.8% and 48.0% respectively. Lung cancer is an important & widespread disease that contributes a major health problem worldwide. Lung cancer kills over 1 million people per year. Cigarette smoking is the major cause of lung cancer. CT scan is the principal radiological examination adjunct to X-Ray chest examination in diagnosis & management of lung cancer. The main Objective of the study was to assess the diagnostic usefulness of CT scan in evaluating & characterize the different types of lung tumors and to correlate CT findings of lung tumors with that of cytopathology. This study was carried out in the department of Radiology & Imaging, Dhaka medical college hospital, Dhaka during the period from 1st January 2007 to March 2008. It was a cross sectional study. Total 51 patients were selected conveniently, detailed history particularly symptoms related to lung tumors was carefully elicited to obtain maximum possible information regarding the illness. Possible diagnosis was established by the combination of history, physical examination, laboratory & radiological investigations. Then patients were underwent CT examination of lung. Cytopathological sample were obtained from the lesion by guided aspiration. Collected FNAC samples were send for cytopathology & collected reports were compared with CT scan reports. Sensitivity of CT to diagnose lung tumor was 97.4%, specificity 76.9% & accuracy 92.2 %.Faridpur Med. Coll. J. 2014;9(1): 37-41

In partial seizure the epileptic discharge begins in one area of the brain and may or may not spread to other areas of the brain.When the discharge spreads to both the hemisphere it may lead to partial seizure with secondary generalization.It is a descreptive cross sectional study carried out at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital between April 2012 to April 2013. A total of 70 patients with partial seizure attended medical opd and admitted to medical ward. There were 40 males and 30 females. Age distribution of patient’s presentation with partial seizure was as follows. Less then 20 years of age: 27 patients. 20-40:24 Patients. 41-60: 21 Patients. 60-80: 8 patients. 20 patients had simple partial seizure. 20 patients had complex partial seizure: 30 patients had partial seizure with secondary generalization. Age at onset of partial seizure: Less than 20 years:45 Patients. 21-40 years:12 patients 41-60 years:20 patients. More than 60 years: 3 patients. Duration before starting treatment: Less than 6 months:33 Patients. 6 month – 1year: 6 patients. More than 1 year: 31 Patients.Status epilepticus: 3 patients.Drug history: carbamazepine, Phenytoin. EEG : Normal in 36 patients.Abnormal in 34 patients.Neuroimaging: Tuberculoma: 6 patients, Calcifed granuloma:39 patients,Tuberous sclerosis:2 patients,mesial temporal sclerosis:3 Patients,Cerebral infarction:12 Patients.Normal :18 patients.Family history of seizure was present in 10 patients. Abstract Background: What has received special attention in recent months is the use of a combination of clinical findings, laboratory markers, and, in addition, the findings of lung Computed Tomography (CT) scan in the design and delivery of risk scoring systems for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID -19) patients. The present study aimed to determine main lung CT-related correlates of disease severity (Intensive Care Units (ICU) requiring) as well as death in COVID -19 patients.Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 515 consecutive patients with definitive diagnosis of COVID-19 admitted to one of the COVID -19 referral hospitals in Tehran. All patients' information was collected through a review of their archives. All patients were evaluated by CT scan of the lungs.Results: The mean follow-up of patients from the time of admission was 10.85±6.11 days between 1 and 30 days. During this period, a total of 29.1% were admitted to the ICU. Also, the mortality rate of patients was equal to 28.2%. According to multivariable logistic regression model with the presence of death-related correlates, crazy paving pattern, diffuse distribution of lesions, CT Severity Score (CTSS) score >12, the presence of plural effusion or emphysema were the main determinants of COVID -19 related death and should be considered for presenting new scoring system for predicting death following COVID -19 disease. In similar model, CTSS score >12 along with the presence of plural effusion, emphysema, or pulmonary hypertension were the main determinants of requiring ICU admission. Conclusion: The CT score higher than 12 along with observing the pattern of diffuse distribution of lesions especially accompanied with emphysema, pleural effusion or pulmonary hypertension can predict patient mortality or will determine the need for hospitalization in the ICU.

Objective: To establish CT scan as a sensitive modality in the diagnosis of sinonasal mass by correlating with the findings of histopathological examination Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) from 01/07/2013 to 30/06/2014. A total of 32 cases were studied. Results: In this study male and female ratio was 1.4:1. So, the incidence of sinonasal mass slightly higher in male (59.3%) compared to the female (40.6%). Incidence of malignant tumour was found more in age group above 60 years. Out of 32 patients, 6 patients (18.7%) were diagnosed histopathologically as infective, 7 patients (21.8%) were benign and 19 patients (59%) had malignant sinonasal mass. Conclusion: Computed tomography (CT) scan examination of the sinonasal mass correlate well in most of the cases with histopathological results. It is therefore can be concluded that CT examination of nose and paranasal sinuses is a useful modality in the evaluation of sinonasal mass.  Bangladesh J of Otorhinolaryngology; October 2018; 24(2): 149-155

The use of x-ray and computed tomography scan is critical in the management of traumatic conditions, particularly head injuries. This study was carried out to assess the level of awareness and attitude of Emergency physicians towards the use of CT in cases of head injury. A cross-sectional study was done among emergency physicians working in five different government hospitals in Anambra State. Among the respondents were 29% males and 4% females: mean age was 35.7 years while their modal age was 31-40 years. All the respondents, 33 (100%) stated they find CT scan as a useful diagnostic medical imaging modality. However less than half of them, 15 (45.5%) stated they refer patients for CT scan for those patients that need it. Whereas most of them, 20 (64.5%) stated that head injury patients should undergo both X-Ray and CT scan virtually all of them 32 (97%), responded that computed tomography, (CT) is better than skull x-ray in the examination of head injury. Though majority of the respondents 31 (93%), stated that CT scan subject the patient to some risks. All those who responded and thought that CT scan should continue to be used as medical diagnostic imaging modality were 33 (100%). The result of the study showed that most of the emergency physicians are aware of the usefulness of CT in the examination of patients presenting with head injury, but the non- availability and cost of services of the CT imaging equipment greatly affected the rate of request for the examination and has affected their attitude towards the use of this imaging modality in the examination of this category of patients in need of it.

The study aims to assess the level of patients’ awareness and knowledge regarding radiation and dosage along with the associated risks from computed tomography (CT) scan. This cross-sectional study used questionnaires, which were distributed to the diagnostic imaging departments of six large local hospitals in Jordan between September 2014 and March 2015. A total of 600 patients completed the questionnaire, out of which, 52.33% of respondents were female and 47.6% male. The findings show insignificant effects of gender on patient’s knowledge ( P = .596) and significant effect of employment and profession on positive scores ( P = .000). Similarly, no statistical differences were found between gender and correct answers ( P = .707). This cohort of patients demonstrated a lack of awareness and knowledge about the use of ionizing radiation for diagnostic imaging. Thus, there may exist a similar lack of information that will require imaging professionals to raise patients’ awareness and offer them the appropriate information.

Background: CT imaging of nose and paranasal sinuses is to confirm the diagnosis, localize the disease, characterize the extent of pathology and describe any anatomical variations. A careful histopathological examination (HPE) is nesessary to decide the nature of a specific lesion. Objective: To observe performance of CT scan as a sensitive modality in the diagnosis of sinonasal mass by comparing with the findings of histopathological examination. Methods: This cross sectional study in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). From 01/ 07/2013 to 30/06/2014 (One year), 42 patients were selected. Resuls: Here male and female ratio was found 1.4:1 So, the incidence of sinonasal growth slightly higher in male (59.3%) compared to the female (40.6%).Incidence of malignant tumour was found more in age group above 60 years. Out of 32 patients, 6 patients (18.7%) were diagnosed histopathologically as infective, 7 patients (21.8%) were benign and 19 patients (59%) had malignant sinonasal mass.
