Background: Transition from foetal to neonatal life is associated with major changes in hemogram due to homeostatic control. There are very wide ranges of hemogram levels that seem to be abnormally high or low in healthy term neonate at birth and during first week of life but these were actually normal for that neonatal period depending upon gestational and post-natal age.Method: Hemogram was studied in 100 normal term neonates born in RNT medical college during June 2009 to Dec 2009.Results: The ranges of various hemogram indices at birth, 24 hours, 48 hours and 7 days are as follows: Hemoglobin 12.2-23.2 gm/dl, 11.6-22.8 gm/dl, 11.5-21.3 gm/dl and 11.3-21.3 gm/dl respectively. Hematocrit 36.8-64.3%, 35.2-61.3%, 34.4-60.6% and 32.2-60.1% respectively. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) 82.2-126.5 fl, 82.5-126.1 fl, 82.1-126.3 fl and 80.5-126.4 fl respectively. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) 26.2-40.9 pg, 26.0-39.7 pg, 26-40.5 pg and 25.4-39.4 pg respectively. MCH concentration (MCHC) 29.6-38 g/dl, 28.5-37.7 g/dl, 28.4-38.6 g/dl and 28.4-38.5 g/dl respectively. Total red blood cell count (TRBC) 3.7-6.9×106/µl, 3.3-6.9×106/µl, 3.3-6.7×106/µl and 3.3-6.3×106/µl respectively.Conclusions: Hemoglobin level falls in early life in healthy term neonate. Also, there is wide range of RBC parameters in healthy term neonates. The normal values of hemogram in neonates are different from other age groups and it varies with postnatal age and gestational age. A reference range derived from large neonatal datasets of varied gestational and postnatal age should be used such as those presented here for healthy term neonates.

Sialolithiasis is a chronic disease in which a sialolith (salivary stone) causes recurrent inflammation of the affected salivary gland. Anemia of inflammation is a well-described pathology in which a chronic inflammatory disease leads to a reduction in the red blood cell count, hemoglobin and hematocrit values. In this retrospective cohort study, we aim to find whether removal of the sialolith and alleviation of the inflammation affect the complete blood count results. We examined data regarding forty-nine patients who underwent surgery for the removal of a submandibular gland sialolith using the duct-stretching technique. Complete blood counts two years before and after the surgical procedure were collected. The average pre-procedure and post-procedure values were calculated for each patient to establish the average blood profile. The pre- and post-procedure values were compared to evaluate the effect of the surgical treatment on the blood profile. We found that the average blood count values for patients with sialolithiasis were towards the lower end of the normal range. Post-surgery, a significant increase in hematocrit, hemoglobin and red blood cell count was observed, which was more pronounced in the older age group and in patients with co-morbidities. We conclude that sialolith removal surgery is associated with significant improvement in the complete blood count values, especially in the elderly and in patients and with co-morbidities. The speculated pathogenesis is relative anemia of inflammation.

AbstractThe effects of platelet donation by apheresis on different parameters of the erythrogram are still unclear. The objective was to meta-analyze the effect of plateletpheresis on hematocrit, hemoglobin, and erythrocyte count, with a systematic review with random effects meta-analysis of the mean difference. The PRISMA guidelines were considered, as well as 133 search strategies on four different databases. Reproducibility was guaranteed and methodological quality was evaluated. Heterogeneity was evaluated with Galbraith and DerSimonian-Laird’s, publication bias with a funnel plot and a Begg’s test, sensitivity analysis and a cumulative meta-analysis were also conducted. Eighteen (18) articles were included, 17 evaluated the effects on hematocrit in 2,564 donors; 13 on hemoglobin in 1,640 donors; and 4 on red blood cell count in 243 donors. A decrease of 2.26% (CI95% = 2.11–2.41) was observed in hematocrit, of 0.80 g/dL (CI95% = 0.75–0.86) in hemoglobin and −0.21 × 1012/L (CI95% = −0.13; −0.29) in red blood cell count. Plateletpheresis has a negative effect on the erythrogram parameters, explained by blood loss in the kits used for the procedure and cell lysis. Such evidence is relevant to secure the efficiency and safety of the procedure, improve selection processes or determine the number of donations that can be performed without affecting donors’ health.

Background: Clinical laboratory reference intervals are an important tool to identify abnormal laboratory test results. The generating of hematological parameters reference intervals for local population is very crucial to improve quality of health care, which otherwise may lead to unnecessary expenditure or denying care for the needy. There are no well-established reference intervals for hematological parameters in southwest Ethiopia. Objective: To generate hematological parameters reference intervals for apparently healthy individuals in southwest Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted involving 883 individuals from March to May 2017. Four milliliter of blood sample was collected and transported to Jimma University Medical Center Laboratory for hematological analysis and screening tests. A hematological parameters were measured by Sysmex XS-500i hematology analyzer (Sysmex Corporation Kobe, Japan). The data were analyzed by SPSS version 20 statistical software. The non-parametric independent Kruskal–Wallis test and Wilcoxon rank-sum test (Mann–Whitney U test) were used to compare the parameters between age groups and genders. The 97.5 percentile and 2.5 percentile were the upper and lower reference limit for the population. Results: The reference interval of red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet count in children were 4.99 × 1012/L (4.26–5.99 × 1012/L), 7.04 × 109/L (4.00–11.67 × 109/L), and 324.00 × 109/L (188.00–463.50 × 109/L), respectively. The reference interval of red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet count in adults was 5.19 × 1012/L (4.08–6.33 × 1012/L), 6.35 × 109/L (3.28–11.22 × 109/L), and 282.00 × 109/L (172.50–415.25 × 109/L), respectively. The reference interval of red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet count in geriatrics were 5.02 × 1012/L (4.21–5.87 × 1012/L), 6.21 × 109/L (3.33–10.03 × 109/L), and 265.50 × 109/L (165.53–418.80 × 109/L), respectively. Most of the hematological parameters showed significant differences across all age groups. Conclusion: Most of the hematological parameters in this study showed differences from similar studies done in the country. This study provided population-specific hematological reference interval for southwest Ethiopians. Reference intervals should also be established in the other regions of the country.

     This study was carried out to examine the effect of Fructooligosaccharide as a source of prebiotic, and commercial dry yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as a source of probiotic and their combination in different level as a source of synbiotic. The experiment was conducted in the fish laboratory of Animal Production Department, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of Sulaimani University. The trials lasted for three months after 21 days of adapting period 120 common carp fingerlings with an average weight of 20 ±2 gm, were used  to test the effect of different levels of the Fructooligosaccharide, yeast and their combination. In T1 fish were fed a diet with 2.5 gm/kg Fructooligosaccharide, in T2, fish were fed a diet 2.5 gm/kg yeast, T3 represents the third treatment, in which fish were fed on a diet 5 gm/kg Fructooligosaccharide. While, in T4 fish were fed a diet 5 gm/kg yeast, and T5 2.5 Fructooligosaccharide: 2.5 Yeast (gm/kg), T6 was 5 Fructooligosaccharide: 5 yeast (gm/kg), T7 2.5 Fructooligosaccharide: 5 Yeast gm/kg), while T8 5 Fructooligosaccharide, 2.5 (gm/kg) Yeast. Each treatment in three replicates in which five fingerlings common carp were stocked in plastic tanks, which fed the experimental diets twice daily. Blood parameters of tested fish showed significant differences in Red blood cell count (1012 cells/l) in T5 and T7 by 1.235 and 1.260, respectively. Hemoglobin (g/dl) data were 117.000 in the fifth treatment. The mean corpuscular hemoglobin (pg/cell) was 121.400 in T2, 137.850 in T3, 121.050 in T4, and 135.300 in T6; mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (g/l) was 924.000, in the seventh treatment, mean corpuscular volume were (fL) 232.500 and 233.050 in T4 and T8 respectively. There were different effects of the treatment in the studied blood parameters in which the level of 2.5 g/kg in both Fructooligosaccharide and dry yeast affect significantly the Red blood cell, White blood cell and Hemoglobin.
