The main aim of using thermal ablation strategies is to eliminate the targeted malignant cells within a specific volume. However, it should be noted that some researchers have reported the potential limitations of some of these techniques. On the other hand, more updated investigations indicated that these limitations could be overcome by the adjuvant use of other management modalities as chemotherapy. Many limitations have been reported with the modality, including the prolonged therapeutic time. Therefore, cryoablation and microwave ablation techniques were introduced in the literature as safe and efficacious modalities that overcame the limitations of the radiofrequency technique. Overall, percutaneous thermal ablation is associated with favorable outcomes and should be used in clinical settings due to the various advantages that have been reported for the modality, in addition to being less invasive.

AbstractLung ablation is ever more recognized since its initial report and use almost two decades ago. With technological advancements in thermal modalities, particularly microwave ablation and cryoablation, better identification of the cohort of patients who best benefit from ablation, and understanding the role of imaging after ablation, image-guided thermal ablation for primary and secondary pulmonary malignancies is increasingly recognized and accepted as a cogent form of local therapy.

AbstractRenal cell carcinoma is a relatively common tumor, with an estimated 63,000 new cases being diagnosed in the United States in 2016. Surgery, be it with partial or total nephrectomy, is considered the mainstay of treatment for many patients. However, those patients with small renal masses, typically less than 3 to 4 cm in size who are deemed unsuitable for surgery, may be suitable for percutaneous thermal ablation. We review the various treatment modalities, including radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, and cryoablation; discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method; and review the latest data concerning the performance of the various ablative modalities compared with each other, and compared with surgery.

The present qualitative study aims at investigating the role of socio-relational variables in the construction of threats to self-esteem, grandiosity, and relaxation in a non-clinical sample of 35 young university students. The work provides fresh experimental evidence of the structural analogy observed in clinical settings between constructions of threat to self-esteem and grandiose fantasies. We hypothesize that the relational dimension would be more strongly present than either biological or psychological dimensions.The results show that descriptions of relaxation differ significantly from their characterizations of the other two domains. Specifically we found greater continuity and narrative connection between the aspects of threat and grandiosity, while the domain of relaxation showed a more “isolated” pattern.

This chapter describes techniques that may be utilized to protect soft tissue structures and vessels that lie less than 1 cm from the planned ablation zone from thermal injury. Hydrodissection with dextrose 5% in water combined with non-ionic contrast material may be used as a means of providing mechanical displacement. Alternatively, an angioplasty balloon inflated with air may be used to provide both physical displacement and thermal insulation. This chapter provides an overview of the percutaneous image-guided thermal ablation technique as well as clinical examples, including microwave ablation of a renal cell carcinoma and radiofrequency ablation of a hepatocellular carcinoma, utilizing hydrodissection and balloon displacement techniques.

Abstract The prognosis of patients with cancer has improved due to an early diagnosis of cancer and advances in cancer treatment. There are emerging reports on cardiotoxicity in cancer treatment and on cardiovascular disease in cancer patients, from which cardiovascular disease has been recognized as a common cause of death among cancer survivors. This situation has led to the need for a medical system in which oncologists and cardiologists work together to treat patients. With the growing importance of onco-cardiology, the role of echocardiography in cancer care is rapidly expanding, but at present, the practice of echocardiography in clinical settings varies from institution to institution, and is empirical with no established systematic guidance. In view of these circumstances, we thought that brief guidance for clinical application was necessary and have therefore developed this guidance, although evidence in this field is still insufficient.

AbstractHeat-based percutaneous thermal ablation techniques have emerged as popular and effective treatments for liver cancer. As the technology continues to evolve, there is a need for optimized methods for experimentation to identify advantageous modifications and developments. Given that assessing and comparing resulting ablation zones in animal models are costly and resource-intensive, in vitro gel phantom models can serve an important role for early-stage experimentation. There exist several gel phantom recipes that have been reported in the literature. In this review, we will review the various recipes, the pros and cons to the existing models, and future potential directions.

Microwave ablation is a safe and effective interventional approach, widely used in the treatment of unresectable primary or metastatic hepatic lesions. Thoracobiliary fistula is a rare postablation complication that can be treated with a conservative or surgical approach. We reviewed aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical picture, diagnostic possibilities, and therapeutic options for biliothoracic fistula developed after microwave ablation of liver metastasis. Furthermore, we reported our experience of successful conservative management of a nonhealing thoracobiliary fistula occurred after percutaneous thermal ablation of colorectal cancer liver metastasis. Our case supports a conservative approach based on percutaneous biliary system decompression and synthetic glue embolization for the treatment of combined biliopleural and biliobronchial fistula.
