<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Despite the high prevalence of allergic rhinitis, there are only few studies on application of ARIA (allergic rhinitis and its impact on asthma) guidelines.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> It was a prospective study of 164 patients. Based on ARIA guidelines; patients were graded for severity, risk factors studied, co morbidities documented and quality of life assessed using rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ).  </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> A total of 164 cases were studied between the age group 10-72 years of which 56.1% were males. Most common trigger observed was dust (56.1%). Allergic conjunctivitis was most common co-morbidity associated. Using RQLQ it was observed that ARIA.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> ARIA guidelines appropriately classify allergic rhinitis, determines risk factors and associated co-morbidities. RQLQ can be used to determine quality of life in allergic rhinitis.</p>

Objective Examine outcomes of septoplasty with turbinate reductions in patients with allergic rhinitis as compared to patients without allergic rhinitis using validated outcome and quality-of-life (QOL) instruments. Study Design Prospective observational cohort study. Setting Single surgeon, university hospital. Subjects and Methods Consecutive study-eligible patients with a symptomatic nasal septal deviation, with (n = 30) or without (n = 30) documented allergic rhinitis, were enrolled from March 2014 to February 2017. All patients subsequently underwent nasal septoplasty and inferior turbinate reductions. Outcomes were studied using the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scale, mini–Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (mini-RQLQ), and Ease-of-Breathing (EOB) Likert scores completed preoperatively and, together with a patient satisfaction Likert, at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Results NOSE scores, EOB scores, and mini-RQLQ scores improved significantly in both groups at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Results were sustained from 3 to 6 months. Although mini-RQLQ scores in allergic patients were higher at all intervals, the magnitude of change in scores in both groups was comparable. Conclusion Although patients with allergic rhinitis report greater allergy-related QOL impairment (mini-RQLQ) on a day-to-day basis than nonallergic patients, this does not appear to attenuate the benefit they might experience from septoplasty and turbinate reductions when indicated for nasal obstruction. Furthermore, the symptomatic relief of their structural nasal obstruction appears to significantly improve their overall allergy-related quality of life. If appropriate expectations are set pre-operatively, allergic rhinitis is neither a contraindication nor a deterrent to septoplasty and turbinate reductions and these patients can reasonably expect a high degree of satisfaction post-operatively.

INTRODUCTION: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a global health problem with gradually increasing prevalence. No large-scale, systematic, and comprehensive study on AR among civil aviation aircrew of China has been reported. We aimed to demonstrate the prevalence of and risk factors for self-reported AR among Chinese civil aviation aircrew.METHODS: This study randomly surveyed 4059 civil aviation aircrew members from 12 cities in mainland China. A structured questionnaire was tailored, designed, and electronically delivered to all participants. Based on self-reported results, prevalence of and risk factors for AR were calculated/analyzed.RESULTS: The prevalence of self-reported AR was 23.38%. Among aircrew members, 10.37% presented with ear barotraumas, whereas 9.95% reported symptom aggravation during flight. Of aircrew members, 10.32% had symptoms related to flight duration, whereas 4.43% of symptoms related to flight altitude. Significant differences between rhinorrhea and sneezing, as well as between nasal itching and sneezing, were observed in the Total Nasal Symptoms Scores (TNSS). The Rhino-conjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) showed significant correlation between each section. TNSS was significantly related to RQLQ. Both TNSS and RQLQ significantly correlated with flight time.CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of self-reported AR among civil aviation aircrew is higher than the general population in China. Attempted to evaluate and compare the impact on quality of life of occupational and non-occupational ACD and to identify the most frequently involved allergens. A quality of life questionnaire was applied. We noted moderate impact on the quality of life of both groups, without a statistical difference. Our study corroborates previous general data on the prevalence of nickel sulphate and paraphenylenediamine as the most common allergens. Potassium bichromate was shown to be one of the main occupational allergens and thimerosal as the main non-occupational allergen in our sample.

Shorter and easier methods of conducting community health surveys would be useful. We conducted a study to demonstrate the responsiveness of the 10-item Mokichi Okada Association quality of life questionnaire (MQL-10) in a follow-up survey and to determine the minimally important difference (MID) for this measure. In 2007, Japanese adults participated in a survey on health prac- tices. We analyzed the MQL-10 scores (n=6365) together with the following factors: gender, age group, disease, reason for participation, and complementary health practices, such as food and eating. The mean baseline MQL-10 score was 26.4±5.83 [standard deviation (SD)] and the mean follow-up score was 27.6±5.45 SD with a mean change of 1.20±4.41 SD. The effect size for change was 0.21 and the standardized response mean was 0.27. The MQL-10 scores in the baseline condition were associated with gender, age group, disease, reason for participation and complementary health practices. Furthermore, the changes in the MQL-10 during the 12 weeks of study were associated with age group, disease, reason for participa- tion and complementary health practices. The increase in frequency of health practices was significantly associated with improvements in the participants’ quality of life (QOL). These results suggest that the MQL-10 is use- ful for assessing the effects of complementary health practices on QOL. The estimate of 3 points for the range of this measure (0-40) was higher than half of the SD of scores; therefore, it was considered reasonable for the MID.

<p><strong>Background:</strong> Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the nasal mucosa. There is negative impact of AR on several aspects of day to day living and quality of life (QoL), which include: daily functioning, sleep, absenteeism, school productivity and academic performance. Almost 40% of children are being affected by AR.</p><p><strong>Method:</strong> An observational study was conducted on randomly selected 100 parents of school going children aging 2 to 15 years, attending OPD in community health center, Chenani, district Udhampur, J and K, for a period of one year from June 2018 to Nov 2018. Children having frequent episodes of allergic rhinitis were enquired about their history of sneezing, runner itchy nose and eyes, thick mucus, nasal blockage or breathless with associated symptoms were selected.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> 81% of subjects had a worse problem during specific months of the year; and 67% had itchy-watery eyes. In 15% of subjects, AR impacted daily activities. A prevalence of 28% for nasal symptoms and 14% for allergic rhino-conjunctivitis was found. Study also showed significantly higher proportion of blockers (61%) than sneeze runners (39%). 56% children had one or more co morbidity, whereas 44% had ‘nil’ co-morbidities. The most common allergens were: pollens (grass, trees and weeds), house dust mites, pets, molds, fungi and food.</p><p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> AR adversely affects quality of life of patients and furthermore studies should be conducted for more clarity on the subject, besides a timely medical intervention and treatment could possibly avoid the rising morbidity associated with the disease.</p>

IntroductionSeveral studies suggest that gut microbiota may play an important role in allergic diseases. The present trial aims to examine effects of the probioticEnterococcus faecalison symptoms of allergic rhinitis in patients. Effects of this probiotic on the immune system have been reported by several studies, but the majority of the previous trials were animal studies. In addition, it is well known that symptoms in allergic rhinitis are prone to exhibit high placebo responses. Moreover, recent studies report that even placebos without deception (open-label placebos) are highly effective in reducing symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Our study design combines both new approaches to assess effects on allergic symptoms in patients. The objective of this study is to compare the effects of a probiotic treatment (E. faecalis) with effects seen by open-label placebo, concealed placebo treatment and no treatment control.Methods and analysisA total of 120 patients with allergic rhinitis will be randomly assigned to one of four different groups: a double-blind probiotic/placebo group (groups 1 and 2), an open-label placebo group (group 3) and a no-treatment group (group 4) to control for spontaneous variation of symptoms. The primary outcome is the evaluation of allergic symptoms using the Combined Symptoms Medication Score. Furthermore, health-related quality of life is examined (Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire). Secondary outcomes include a visual analogue scale on allergic burden and a second quality of life questionnaire. This report describes the study design of the randomised controlled trial.Ethics and disseminationThe study design was approved by the ethical committee of the UKT Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy, Tübingen, Germany. The trial is registered at the German Clinical Trials Register (www.drks.de, DRKS00015804). Hyeonggaeyeongyo-tang (HYT) is an ancient formula of oriental medicine traditionally used to treat rhinitis; however, clinical evidence has not yet been established. The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term and long-term efficacy and safety of HYT for chronic rhinitis. Adult subjects with chronic rhinitis symptoms were recruited. The subjects received HYT for 4 weeks and had follow-up period of 8 weeks. Any medicines used to treat nasal symptoms were not permitted during the study. The skin prick test was performed to distinguish the subjects with allergic rhinitis from those with nonallergic rhinitis. After treatment, the total nasal symptoms score and the Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire score significantly improved in the whole subject group, in the allergic rhinitis group, and in the nonallergic rhinitis group, with no adverse events. This improvement lasted during a follow-up period of 8 weeks. Total IgE and eosinophil levels showed no significant difference after treatment in the allergic rhinitis group. HYT improved nasal symptoms and quality of life in patients with allergic rhinitis and nonallergic rhinitis. This is the first clinical study to evaluate the use of HYT to treat patients with rhinitis. This trial has been registered with the ClinicalTrials.gov IdentifierNCT02477293.

Background.Allergic rhinitis (AR) significantly impairs the quality of life of the patients; however, a questionnaire alone is an insufficient and subjective measure of this condition. Obtaining an objective clinical assessment of the level of impairment will be valuable for its treatment.β-Endorphin is one of the most important mediators of both mental state and specific immunity. Thus, we investigated the possibility of usingβ-endorphin as a biomarker for evaluating the impairment level in AR.Methods.This study included 48 patients with AR and 32 healthy volunteers. The serumβ-endorphin level was determined by enzyme immunoassay, and the serum-specific IgE and total IgE levels were determined by immunoblot assay. The Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) was used to assess the impairment level in the symptom duration.Results.Theβ-endorphin concentration was significantly decreased in AR patients compared to the healthy controls (p=0.000,p<0.05). There was significant negative correlation between the impairment level and serumβ-endorphin level (correlation coefficient:-0.468;p=0.001;p<0.05), but there was no association between the serumβ-endorphin and total IgE levels (p=0.947,p>0.05).Conclusion.β-Endorphin is a systemic biomarker that has the potential to assess the impairment level in AR and may therefore be a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of AR.
