Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the community service learning initiative among Taiwanese communication students by examining the link between the value of work-based learning and learning outcomes from the applied classroom projects. Design/methodology/approach This study involves the applied classroom projects. Data are captured in both quantitative (i.e. survey) and qualitative methods (i.e. reflective papers). The survey is designed to measure general attitudes and perceptions of service learning students. The reflective papers focus on the participants’ expectations of the service learning outcome. Findings The findings suggest that work-based and service learning projects are beneficial for the students, faculty, university and community partners. As an extension of experiential learning, students acquire a deeper understanding of the course material, gain practical expertise in the real world, develop interpersonal communication skills and engage in civic responsibility. Practical implications This study supports the notion that service learning engagements help students develop problem-solving skills. It is suggested that since the content of traditional learning in the discipline of communication has changed extensively over the past decades (i.e. from traditional media to new digital media), service learning can be a complimentary tool to not only broaden students’ learning, but to also expand their professional horizons and opportunities. Originality/value The current study expands existing theory and advances our understanding of service learning in the discipline of communication in a Taiwanese context. With practical roots embedded in Western educational initiatives linking service learning to higher education, this paper reveals that service learning does work across cultures as well.

The concept of Service-Learning has been presented in the article. The essence and features of Service-learning have been determined. The difference between Service-Learning, volunteering and practice have been indicated. Service- Learning at the university is aimed at solving community problems, but does not involve the acquisition of professional skills and is not a part of the course in the structure of the curriculum. Practice involves the acquisition of professional skills, but is not always aimed at solving community problems. Service-Learning is defined as an educational approach that unionizes the content of academic learning with the solution of real problems of the community. Service-Learning is the delivery of a service to the community within the context of an educational program of study. Typical features of Service - Learning are: Service - meeting of real needs of the community by working together with that community; Learning - implementing in the curriculum of students (students using their academic knowledge in fieldwork for meeting real needs and real problem solving in the community). The article has presented possibilities of introduction of Service-Learning in educational process of university. The stages and cross-cutting processes of development and implementation of a Service-Learning project have been characterized. The content of project activity in the context of Service-Learning have been idefined and detailed: motivation; diagnosis; design and planning; project implementation; closure. The content of cross-cutting processes in the system of Service-Learning has been revealed: reflection; ongoing record, systematization and communication; process evaluation or monitoring. Foreign and domestic practices of Service-Learning in the conditions of universities and non-formal education have been analyzed. The advantages of Service-Learning are determined not only for specialties with a certain social component (social work, educational, pedagogical sciences), but also for other specialties. Opportunities of extrapolation of experience of Service-Learning in universities of Italy, Slovakia, and Malaysia in Ukraine have been identified. Prospects for the transformation of forms and methods of Service-Learning in Ukraine Universities have been determined experimentally. The author investigates feasibility of implementation of Service-Learning in Ukrainian Universities. The feasibility has been defined by means of questionnaires. Survey analysis shows that the vast majority of students are willing to participate in projects or initiatives that address problems and meet community needs. Also, the vast majority of students think that such projects should be implemented in the curriculum.

Service-learning (SL) provides an opportunity for students to learn personal and professional skills while providing a useful service to the community. Many pharmacy education programs use SL within their curriculum because of the benefits to the community, the faculty, the learning institution and the student(s). While SL has been used in schools/colleges of pharmacy for many years, SL that also fulfills IPPE requirements is newer. This paper seeks to promote the use of combined SL/IPPE experiences. It provides an example where students volunteered at federally qualified health centers and also reviews the ACPE Standards related to SL. Schools/colleges of pharmacy are encouraged to design mechanisms for students to participate in combined SL/IPPE experiences as part of their IPPE requirements.   Type: Idea Paper

Digital media can support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) businesses to increase brand awareness of their products, so they can gain competitive advantages and reach a broader market. Unfortunately, not all MSME businesses have the capabilities to utilize digital media to support their businesses. The MSMEs in Buah Batu district face problems that can not be resolved by conventional marketing methods, such as lack of brand awareness and drop in sales which results in the decrease of their revenues and profits. This Community Service aims to improve the MSME's knowledge and skills on creative digital marketing strategy and their understanding of the marketplace so they can create online stores for their businesses. Online stores make it feasible for those MSMEs to broaden their market reach. For the problems related to the IT area, the team will provide network training. The method applied was the service-learning approach. The results of this community service are that the MSMEs in Buah Batu District are capable to create their online shops, promote their products through the marketplace and social media and finally increase their revenues. The output of these community service activities is the design of MSME product packaging and website.

Promoting cultural competence in serving diverse clients has become critically important across disciplines. Yet, progress has been limited in raising awareness and sensitivity. Tervalon and Murray-Garcia (1998) believed that cultural competence can only be truly achieved through critical self-assessment, recognition of limits, and ongoing acquisition of knowledge (known as “cultural humility”). Teaching cultural humility, and the value associated with it remains a challenging task for many educators. Challenges inherent in such instruction stem from lack of resources/known strategies as well as learner and instructor readiness. Kirk (2007) further indicates that providing feedback on one's integrity could be threatening. In current study, both traditional classroom-based teaching pedagogy and hands-on community engagement were reviewed. To bridge a gap between academic teaching/learning and real world situations, the author proposed service learning as a means to teach cultural humility and empower students with confidence in serving clients from culturally/linguistically diverse backgrounds. To provide a class of 51 students with multicultural and multilingual community service experience, the author partnered with the Tzu-Chi Foundation (an international nonprofit organization). In this article, the results, strengths, and limitations of this service learning project are discussed.
