Higher education students use mobile phones, equipped for Internet access. Mobile technologies can offer effective, satisfying and accessible m-learning experiences. A contribution has been made to knowledge on evaluating m-learning environments and to mobile human-computer interaction (MHCI), with the innovative synthesis of the MUUX-E Framework, which fills a gap in the domain of m-learning. MUUX-E is a single comprehensive, multi-faceted instrument for evaluating m-learning environments, emphasising usability and user experience in mobile educational contexts. It was developed by extensive literature studies on each aspect, and has five categories, 31 criteria and numerous sub-criteria. Using a design-based research paradigm, MUUX-E was applied iteratively to evaluate and enhance successive versions of m-LR, a mobile application created for a Software Engineering module. Participants were students and expert evaluators. MUUX-E served well to identify problems and strengths. The students were more positive than the experts regarding the benefits of m-LR, yet insightfully reported more system problems.

This chapter discusses the rapid proliferation of mobile devices. Consumer adoption of 3G and 4G technologies has outpaced all other technologies, with the Earth becoming home to 3 billion connections in the first 15 years, and projected to grow to 8 billion smartphone users by 2020. Technological advancements have reduced adoption costs and enhanced user experience. The global average cost of mobile subscriptions relative to maximum data speed has decreased 99 percent, decreasing about 40 percent per year between 2005 and 2013. However, the main reason behind the widespread adoption of mobile devices is the tremendous social and economic value generated by the mobile ecosystem. A report by the Boston Consulting Group showed that mobile technologies are a critical driver of the world economy, generating global revenue of almost $3.3 trillion and 11 million new jobs. Mobile phones have also fundamentally altered consumer behavior. Whether it is for entertainment or information gathering purposes, people are spending less time on traditional channels such as print, radio, and television, and more time on mobile devices.

A concern with E-Learning environments is whether students achieve superior or equivalent learning outcomes to those obtained through traditional methods. In this chapter the authors present the results of a research study comparing students’ learning outcomes with four different delivery methods - printed study material, lecture format, computers and “smart” mobile phones. The results of our study show that learning outcomes are similar when students study by using a computer, mobile phone, or lecture format, while studying with print material yields slightly superior test results. These findings are discussed in the context of the type of learning used in the study and the factors that impact on the effectiveness of using mobile phones for learning purposes, such as learning styles and attitudes to computers. The authors conclude the chapter by briefly discussing developments in mobile technologies and the opportunities they present for mobile learning.

Implementing inquiry in the outdoors introduces many challenges for teachers, some of which can be dealt with using mobile technologies. For productive use of these technologies, teachers should be provided with the opportunity to develop relevant knowledge and practices. In a professional development (PD) program in this design-based research, 24 teachers were involved in adaptation of a learning environment supporting inquiry in the outdoors that included the use of mobile technologies. They first experienced the learning environment as learners, then adapted it for their own use, and finally, enacted the adapted environment with peers. We examined the scope and character of teacher involvement in adaptation, and the consequent professional growth, by analyzing observations, questionnaires, interviews and the adapted learning-environments. Findings indicate that all teachers demonstrated change processes, including changes in knowledge and practice, but the coherence of the learning environments decreased when substantial adaptations were made. Some teachers demonstrated professional growth, as reflected by their implementation of ideas learned in the PD program in their daily practice, long after the PD program had ended. This study demonstrates how the Teachers as Designers approach can support teacher learning and illustrates productive use of scaffolds for teacher growth and professional development.

Securing confidential information on mobile platforms has been, is, and will be a topical issue for specialists. In order to eliminate these vulnerabilities, specialized companies have made some patches, but these do not constitute a real guarantee that the same or any other applications will not be attacked and exploited without the users' will. Mitigating these attacks on smartphones can be achieved by securing mobile phones from both users and mobile providers. This article proposes the development of a chat application on the Android platform as a solution to ensure the security of digital data that is transferred through the available communication platforms. When designing this mobile application, the sudden increase in the number of users was taken into account so that the application is stable and creates a pleasant experience for them.

We present the implications of a novel approach to design-based research, Special Education Embodied Design (SpEED), for inclusive education. SpEED is a new way of thinking about how Special Education students can learn through whole-body participation (Tancredi et al., in press). The goal of SpEED is to update our thinking about special education and inclusion based on the latest developments in cognitive science. We illustrate the utility of embodied design to teaching and research on issues affecting learners in Special Education through examples centering different Special Education populations, including Deaf learners, learners on the autism spectrum, and sensory-seeking learners. Each project focuses on deepening the learning opportunities we offer students by using learners' existing embodied resources. We conclude with a commentary on considerations for implementing SpEED within the Italian educational system.

Modern electronic products are changing with each passing day, and the most prominent one is the smart phone. Screen is the key part for people to extract and exchange information through mobile phones, and its development is very rapid. This article summarize the development laws of screen size, screen occupation ratio, resolution and shape from the perspective of user experience, and analyze the reasons for its development law. According to the research, the optimal size of the mobile phone screen suitable for the users is summed up and verified through the questionnaire, which provides a reliable basis for the developer of mobile phone to design smart phone screen and improve the satisfaction of the user experience.

Abstract This work is an attempt to contribute to the knowledge and guidance of young people (lyceum graduates, higher education students and recent graduates) regarding important issues related to their career and vocational prospects. These issues are related to major relevant questions such as 'what' and 'where' to study, as well as the contents and the prospects of all provided specializations by the departments of Greek institutes of higher education. This article focuses on the analysis and the design of a mobile-based decision support system (DSS) to assist its users in getting thoroughly informed about HE studies in Greece, and eventually in choosing their vocational prospects. An extensive literature and applications review has revealed that there are no such DDS systems, giving to this work an innovative character. The article contains all main elements of system's architecture and design including the essential technical information, presents the main features and representative screenshots of the mobile-based application and comes to conclusions and future suggested work.
