Project management tools have been widely used in construction project life cycles to monitor progress, evaluate payments/claims, and manage construction works worldwide. Despite their capability in helping project managers to achieve specific objectives within time, budget, and standards, not every construction organization in Malaysia would fully utilize these tools due to several challenges. As numerous studies substantiate the importance and of project management tools, lackluster adoption rates have led to productivity problems, project delays, and maturity problems at both project and enterprise levels in the construction industry. This study investigates the level of implementation and addresses the significant barriers that impede the utilization of project management tools. A survey was administered to well-known construction companies in Malaysia. This study revealed that the implementation level was discouragingly low, and the top 5 barriers were: (1) financial considerations, (2) restrictions on human capital, (3) high annual turnover, (4) lack of technology awareness, and (5) organizational culture. These findings suggest that the Malaysian construction industry should: overhaul financial and human resource limitations, increase assistance for users, and boost the partial implementation of basic techniques of project management to the maximum extent possible. The practitioners can understand the dynamics and causes of predicaments to the full implementation of project management tools in their respective companies. As for academicians, these findings help theoretical development and literature arguments on our current construction industry as a whole and optimistically help finds ways to make the Malaysian construction industry more efficient.

Earned Value Management (EVM) is one of the fundamental approaches acting as a comprehensive project management and controlling technique for tracking the costs and examining project expenditures relative to the physical progress of work. Majority of the previous literature reviews and findings indicates the positive contributions of EVM in monitoring the project time-cost performance progressively and forecasting its future trends. However, EVM was not widely used as practically, the traditional cost and schedule monitoring tool is still very common in the construction industry. Thus, this research was conducted using quantitative method to the identified quantity surveying, project management and construction firms in Klang Valley area to achieve the objectives of; (1) to identify the implementation level of EVM in construction projects, (2) to recognize the EVM contribution as cost monitoring tool compared to the other mehods, and (3) to ascertain the challenges in using EVM. Based on the result, majority has reaffirmed that EVM is positively contribute to project cost monitoring and provide an overall effective cost management tools in their projects. Despite the major challenges identified in using EVM are due to the lack of EVM knowledge, expertise and experience by the user in the industry, the results also indicating that more construction players have come to realize that integration of cost and time management in EVM is beneficial to the construction industry.

The tasks performed by a project manager are of special importance to the well being and economic prosperity of construction companies. This paper is aiming at defining the Greek project managers' dominant cognitive abilities, personality characteristics, skills and knowledge. An effort is made to identify available attributes associated with successful management performance and career development. The survey was conducted based on a structured questionnaire. The effort led to 102 responses, originating from engineers and construction professionals, throughout the Greek Construction Industry, including Public-Work Authorities. The questionnaire was based on international management literature and interviews. The study discusses the results of the survey and provides a comparison with those attributes identified in the international literature and correlates the participants' profile with their responses.

With the fast development of the construction industry, traditional project management cannot deal with some complex construction projects. This paper reviewed the development of the project portfolio management and the current situation of the Chinese construction industry. We suggest that project portfolio management is applicable and should be adopted in Chinese construction companies.

The importance of evaluating behaviors as an underpinning component of the project management body of knowledge is widely recognized. This paper reports on research that evaluated the behaviors of two functionally disparate sets of project managers operating within the construction industry. The first comprised those with overall responsibility for the on-site production function (the management contractor), while the second comprised client project managers overseeing project activities on behalf of the procuring organization (client's project managers). The behavioral competencies of both groups were evaluated using the established McBer methodology (cf. Spencer & Spencer, 1993), in which managerial characteristics are measured using behavioral event interviews. A total of 40 superior performing project managers were behaviorally profiled. The findings reveal 11 behaviors that are generic in nature and underpin effectiveness in the project management role, with one additional competency apparently determined by the particular job role context of the project manager. Comparisons are also drawn with the generic management competency profile, which suggests the existence of a range of behaviors specific to the project management discipline. The identification of both generic and job-specific competencies for the project management role has potentially far-reaching implications for the way in which project managers are developed in the future.

Projects are complex works subjected to significant time, budget and quality constraints. One or the greatest challenges in project management still remaining unsolved is determining what is necessary to do in order to achieve success or failure. According to the specialized literature, both concepts of success factors and failure causes in projects are largely subjective and therefore difficult to quantify, depending on the point of view of the stakeholders involved. This paper compares which are the most frequent failure causes and the most important success factors among three different scenarios: for any type of project, for ICT projects and for ICT projects carried out in Spain only, by means of a worldwide empirical survey carried out among project managers intended to gather their personal perceptions on the matter. The survey is based on a questionnaire anonymously distributed through a professional internet network.

The full capabilities of well-structured project management are rarely realized outside of the scope of the respective profession. The tools and skills in which project managers specialize are furthermore often considered in high-level business contexts, but are far less remembered as crucial components to many other endeavors. This project portfolio serves as an insight into the structure and process of managing a short-term social awareness project and an exploration and application of various project management tools. It also provides a review of the success of implementing sound project management toward humanitarian work on a community level. Public Equity, the team of university students behind this project and report, ultimately hopes to inspire others to learn how they may increase the impact of their community work through strong planning and goal setting.

In this article practical aspects of using project management in popular restaurants of different countries are considered. Within the framework of this study, the experience of using the Hard Rock Cafe project management tools is highlighted. It is noted that the management of the project in Hard Rock Cafe includes three phases: planning, setting goals, defining the project and organizing the team; drawing up of a calendar schedule of works; control. Considered the project of opening a new restaurant from Pizza Duono (Italy). It stands out that in this restaurant project managers are in sight, they are responsible for: all necessary activities have been completed in the right sequence and on time; the project did not go beyond the budget; the project would meet the quality standards, etc. The study also examined an example of project caching to change the project completion time from the restaurant Pizza Duono (Italy, Rome). According to the methodology of this restaurant, on each of the critical paths the restaurant must identify one type of activity that can be subjected to crashing.
