Introduction: Today, quality of life and its influential factors are among the most important challenges of urban life. Knowing the factors affecting the quality of life and the effort to promote these indices is necessary. In this research, social ecological components have been attempted to address the quality of life of people in Malekan City, Iran. Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted using two questionnaires: the 26-item Quality of Life Questionnaire and the Social Ecological Components Questionnaire developed by the researcher. The multistage sampling method was conducted. In the first stage, the clusters were counted and in the next stage, stratified sampling was performed. Questionnaires were completed in three months. After completing the questionnaires, data were entered into SPSS and statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA. Results: The results showed that age and gender had no relationship with access to social ecological components. However, they were significantly correlated with occupation and education variables (P =0.0001). Regression analysis revealed that quality of life had a significant relationship between satisfaction with social components and access to these components (P = 0.0001). In other words, more access to social ecological components improved the individuals' quality of life. Conclusion: According to the findings, it can be concluded that higher levels of access to social ecological components enhanced the people's quality of life. The ability to improve socioeconomic components improved the individuals' quality of life.

The study aimed to identify and compare the factors affecting health-related quality of life (HRQoL) depending on the occupational status of cancer survivors. This study was a secondary data analysis from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2014 to 2018. Hierarchical multivariate linear regression was used to investigate the factors affecting the HRQoL of each group. Non-working cancer survivors had significantly lower HRQoL than working cancer survivors (p < 0.001). A hierarchical multiple regression model showed that demographic, health-related, and psychological characteristics explained 62.0% of non-working cancer survivors’ HRQoL (F = 4.29, p < 0.001). Among the input variables, health-related characteristics were the most influential factors (ΔR2 = 0.274, F = 9.84, p < 0.001). For working cancer survivors, health-related characteristics were the only variable that was statistically associated with HRQoL (F = 5.556, p < 0.001). It is important to enhance physical activities and manage the chronic disease to improve the HRQoL of working cancer survivors. Further, managing health-related characteristics, including depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation, is necessary for non-working cancer survivors. Regarding working survivors, psychological factors such as depressive symptoms and suicidal tendencies did not affect HRQoL. Therefore, an early and effective return to work program should be developed for the improvement of their HRQoL.

We assessed the functional impairment in Charcot-Marie-Tooth resulting from 17p11.2-p12 duplication (CMT1A) patients using the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), which is a quality of life questionnaire. Twenty-five patients of both genders aged ≥10 years with a positive molecular diagnosis of CMT1A were selected. Age- and gender-matched Control Group (without family history of neuropathy), and the sociodemographic and professional conditions similar to the patients' group were selected to compare the SF-36 results between them. The results showed that the majority quality of life impairments in CMT1A patients occurred in the social and emotional domains. Functional capacity also tended to be significantly affected; other indicators of physical impairment were preserved. In conclusion, social and emotional aspects are mostly neglected in the assistance provided to CMT1A Brazilian patients, and they should be better understood in order to offer global health assistance with adequate quality of life as a result.

Relevance. In 2013, the Wisconsin Stone Quality of Life Questionnaire (WISQoL) was developed a specific tool for assessing the quality of life (QoL) in patients with urolithiasis. Aim. To determine the possibility of using the WISQoL and SF-36 questionnaires to study the treatment results of patients with kidney stones. Materials and methods. The study included 218 patients with nephrolithiasis. Patients were divided into 2 groups: the first the size of the stone up to 10 mm and the second from 11 to 20 mm. At the first stage, the efficacy of treatment patients by the extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and percutaneous nephrolitholapaxy (PNL) 1 week, 1 and 3 months after surgery was compared. Questionnaires were used to study factors affecting the QOL of patients, including: gender, age, number, density and size of stones, hydronephrosis, stone free rate (SFR), type of surgery. At the next stage, the dynamics of changes in scores for the domains of questionnaires at different stages of treatment was evaluated. Results. The efficacy of treating kidney stones up to 1 cm in size after 3 months with ESWL was 86,1% and PNL 94,4 %, while stones up to 20 mm using ESWL 73,4% and percutaneous techniques 90,6%. Gender, age, stone size, SFR affected the QoL of patients with nephrolithiasis, while the number and density of stones, the presence of hydronephrosis and the type of operation were not significant. Patients 1 week after PNL had lower QoL scores in the domains of social impact and impact on vitalyty of WISQoL and mental heals of SF-36. After 1 month, these changes were determined only in the social impact domain and completely regressed by the 3rd month. Conclusion. SFR after ESWL and PNL in the first group is comparable, in the second group, percutaneous operations were 17,2% more effective. Male gender, age up to 40 years, stone size more than 1 cm, and also not reached SFR negatively affects patients with nephrolithiasis. Compared with ESWL and PNL is accompanied by the worst dynamics of QOL scores only 1 week after the operation; upon further observation, negative changes are leveled.

The aim of the current study was to investigate differences in quality of life outcomes and depression of mothers in East-Asia and Central Europe. 170 women in Japan and 226 women in Austria with children between 3 and 5 answered the same cross-culturally validated questionnaires. The Quality of Life Questionnaire from the WHO (WHOQOL-Bref), the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2), the Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC-13), a Social Support Scale (MSPSS), and questions on gender orientation were used. In all dimensions of QOL (physical, psychological, social, and environmental) Japanese women had lower QOL scores compared to Austrian mothers (P<001). Seven percent of women in both countries experienced major depression. In both countries sense of coherence, experienced stress level, satisfaction with income, social support, and gender roles had an influence on QOL and depressive symptoms. Mothers in Japan consider life events less comprehensible, manageable, and meaningful and experience less support. Consequently, creating an environment where fathers could be more involved in child rearing and mothers have more opportunities to choose between life styles and working and social environments would improve QOL not only in Japanese mothers but also in other countries all over the world.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory impaired patients have decreased quality of life and may need to develop a coping ability for the olfactory loss. This study investigated how factors like olfactory function, disease duration, etiology, age, and gender affect patients` quality of life and emotional ability to cope. METHODS: Four hundred and thirteen consecutive patients with the chief complaint of olfactory dysfunction were evaluated. The Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders (QOD) included negative statements (QOD-NS) that indicated the impact on the quality of life, and positive statements (QOD-PS) reflecting the emotional coping ability. Relations between studied factors and QOD-NS or QOD-PS were analyzed. RESULTS: Poorer olfaction and younger age correlated with increased QOD-NS scores, whereas longer disease duration and older age correlated with increased QOD-PS scores. Females had poorer coping than males. QOD-PS scores were inversely related to QOD-NS scores. CONCLUSIONS: The impact of olfactory loss is more significantly felt by younger patients with poorer olfaction. Older patients or those with longer disease duration develop better emotional coping abilities so as to reduce the impact on quality of life. It may be helpful for the patients with olfactory loss to develop emotional coping as early as possible to decrease the olfactory impact.

AbstractObjective:To evaluate quality of life after surgery for benign neoplastic disease of the parotid gland.Patients and methods:A quality of life questionnaire, which was created from the Hebrew version of the University of Washington Quality of Life prototype, was applied to 55 patients who underwent surgery for benign neoplastic parotid disease. All patients were examined in Baskent University Adana Teaching and Medical Research Center, where all except 10 subjects (who responded by phone) completed the quality of life questionnaire. Results:The highest overall score was 96.3 indicating no salivary fistula. Only one patient complained of salivary secretion through the wound scar. The lowest overall score was 59.5 indicating loss of sensation. Although no post-surgical pain was reported by 32 (58 per cent) patients, 16 (29 per cent) patients reported a post-surgical change in their appearance. Scarring and surgical site depression were reported by 26 (47 per cent) and 17 patients (30 per cent), respectively. Facial nerve impairment was reported by seven patients (13 per cent) during the early post-operative period; these patients recovered from that impairment. The only significant statistical correlations were noted between general health and gender, and between post-surgical pain and gender. There was not any statistical correlation between all data and age, tumour type and education level. Conclusion:The general status of patients who have undergone surgery for a benign parotid neoplasm can be assessed with a quality of life questionnaire. Patients' post-surgical quality of life can be improved by the correct choice of surgical approach and reconstructive method.
