Performance appraisal forms an important practice in human resource management. In Kenya, the Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) has been used since 2012 as an appraisal approach to evaluate teachers’ performance. However, the effectiveness of performance appraisal in enhancing teacher productivity as reflected in students; academic achievement has not been documented in Kenya and remains questionable. In Migori County, student performance in KCSE examination has been comparatively low. The objective of this study was to analyse the influence of professional development appraisal on teacher performance among public secondary schools in Migori County. Specific objectives were to determine the level of teachers’ performance after evaluation, and to establish how appraisal of professional development influence performance of teachers. Descriptive survey design on a target population of 276 principals and 2961 teachers was employed in the study. Krejcie and Morgan (1970) table was adopted to derive a sample size of 342 teachers and 57 principals stratified based on school category population. Questionnaire and interview guide were used to collect data from teachers and principals respectively. The study found that there was a significant difference in the mean of teacher’s performance after appraisal and the category of teachers’ schools. The study also found that 64.1% changes in teachers’ performance is attributed to professional development appraisal (R2 =0.641), and that professional development appraisal (β=0.803) is a significant predictor of teacher performance {F (1, 278) =493.200, P<0.05}. The study concludes that professional development appraisal significantly contributes to performance of teachers in secondary schools.

The objective of the study was to determine the extent of ICT implementation and use in financial management of Secondary Schools in Kajiado County, Kenya. Descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. The target population for this study was the 61 public secondary schools’ principals, 1220 teachers, 610 students, 25 ICT teachers, 6 Sub-county Directors of Education in the 6 Sub-counties and 1 County Director of Education in Kajiado County. The study used 30% of the accessible population as sample size. The sample size for this study was 18 principals, 366 teachers, 8 ICT teachers,183 students, 2 Sub- county Directors of Education and 1 County Director of Education. This study used questionnaires, Observation schedules and interview schedule as tools for data collection. The questionnaires were administered to Principals, teachers and ICT coordinators while interview schedules were administered to the students, Sub-county Directors of Education and the County Director of Education. The pilot test was carried at the schools with similar characteristics to those sampled through random sampling. Instrument reliability was determined through test- retest method. Cronbach alpha was used to test the internal reliability of the measurement instrument. The study concluded that most of the public secondary schools in Kajiado County had not embraced ICT in various areas of administration. Based on the findings, the study recommends that proper technology should be put in place by purchasing of the required ICT facilities in schools to enhance management of schools using the current technology.

<p>The use of drama rehearsals as a tool for inculcating discipline among students had been investigated by a number of scholars and education practitioners on global, continental and regional levels. However notable that drama rehearsals as a tool for inculcating discipline could be overlooked as a result of its demands, such as time. Therefore, purpose of the study was to determine effectiveness of drama rehearsals as a strategy in the management of discipline in secondary schools in central region, Kenya. The study used descriptive survey design. The target population was 79 deputy principals, 79 drama teachers, and 1888 drama students and non-drama students in secondary school in Central Region, Kenya. Both the census technique and random sampling were used to get a representative sample size of 419 respondents. Data was collected from the respondents using pretested questionnaires and was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) and then interpreted. The study found that the relationship between drama rehearsals and management of discipline among secondary school students was significant. The study therefore recommended that there was need to for school administrators to facilitate more drama rehearsals in order to improve the levels of discipline among students. Student Council is a representative structure through which students in a secondary school become involved in school affairs. The study set out to investigate student council participation in the management of discipline in public secondary schools in Teso North Sub-County in Busia County, Kenya. The study sought to establish: the influence of student council participation in the formulation of rules and regulations on management of discipline, and the influence of student council involvement in formulating punishment on the management of discipline. The target population was 7379 students and 189 teachers and 27 principals from 27 schools. The research employed descriptive survey design using a random sample of 365 students, 18 teachers and 9 principals. This sample size was determined using Krejcie and Morgan’s table of sample determination and using coefficient variation of 30% and a standard error of 2% through stratified simple random sampling technique. The data was collected using a selfadministered questionnaire. The study established that schools involved students in designing punishment but students never took punishment positively and that common disciplinary problems experienced in schools was due to lack of students involvement. It was further established that students were haphazardly involved in the school management of students’ discipline. Thus the study recommends schools to empower students’ council in which students’ views and ideas are heard and discussed; Ministry of education to organize and offer seminars where school heads are well sensitized on involving students in school management.

Aim: This study examined pedagogy and subject content needs for Professional Development (PD) to improve teachers’ skills in teaching science in secondary schools in Mbeya, Tanzania. Study Design: The study employed a quantitative research approach and cross-sectional survey design. Methodology: The main instrument used for the study was questionnaire. In this study, schools were randomly selected, and 256 respondents, science teachers were selected through stratified sampling technique. The data collected were analyzed quantitatively. Results: Science teachers need Professional Development (PD) in Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), masterly of science subject contents and technological skills of modern teaching. There was no significant difference in the mean scores for components of pedagogy knowledge between teachers who teach math subject and those who teach physics, chemistry and biology at  using independent samples t-test. Teachers need of PD in subject content in topics were as follows: accounts (61.7%), genetics (46.2%), electromagnetism (44.2%), electronics (40.4%), circles and the Earth as a sphere (29.6%), statistics and probability (28.4%), inorganic chemistry (25%), and ionic theory and electrolysis (24.1%). Conclusion: Science and mathematics teachers in Secondary schools need PD intervention in the subject content of science subjects.

The provision of paid leave and time-offs are practices in human resource administration that aims at reducing burnout, stress as well as family-work conflict. Thus, provision of leave allows an employee to recuperate from the daily pressure of work. However, in the education sector in Kenya, information concerning administration of leave policies to teachers is not clear. In some counties such as Homa Bay in Kenya, secondary school teachers are faced with problems such lesson overload, inadequate time-offs for sick and lactating teachers, and inadequate bereavement leaves. The number of teachers seeking for transfer has also increased over the years. The purpose of this study was to analyse the influence of adherence to leave policies by school administration on performance of teachers in public secondary schools in Homa Bay County. Specific objectives were to determine the level of teachers’ performance and to establish the influence of provision of leave on performance of teachers. The study employed descriptive survey design. Target population comprised a total of 257 principals and 2,231 teachers. Yamane’s formula was used to calculate 292 teachers and 22 Principals from whom data was collected using questionnaire and interview schedule respectively. The study found that adherence to leave policies (F = 66.488 ; P = 0.0) as a significant predictor of teachers’ performance abeit with a low contribution (21.8% or  R2 =0.218) change in teacher performance. It is concluded that adherence to leave policies do not provide adequate satisfaction to elicit effort towards enhanced performance among secondary school teacher.

Drop and pick methodology was adopted for data collection. The findings showed that use and implementation ICT in school administration in Kajiado County was very low. The study concluded that most schools in Kajiado County had not embraced ICT in various areas of administration. Therefore, the study recommends that proper technology should be put in place by purchasing of the required ICT facilities in schools to enhance management of schools using the current technology.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the monitoring and evaluation of teacher effectiveness a case of Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development tool (TPAD) in public secondary schools in Nyandarua South Sub-county, Nyandarua County, Kenya. The study was set to achieve three objectives; To determine the influence of teacher clog in and clog out exercise on teacher performance in public secondary schools in Nyandarua South Sub-county, Nyandarua county Kenya, to examine the influence of teachers’ class registers on teacher performance in public secondary schools and to determine the influence of teachers adherence to school deadlines on their performance in public secondary schools. The study was guided by Performance Appraisal Model and benefited from descriptive survey research design. The target population was all 18 public secondary schools in Nyandarua south sub-county. The respondents were 18 Principals, 18 deputy Principals 20 H.O.D s and 90 teachers being a sample size of 30 percent of the entire public school population. Teachers were sampled using simple random sampling to obtain five teachers in every sampled school, totaling to 90 teachers. Questionnaires, interview guide and document analysis guide formed the instruments used for data collection. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze collected data. The study findings revealed that monitoring of teachers on their reporting on duty and leaving from duty improved the teachers stayed in school hence more contact time between teachers and learners in school, the monitoring of teacher class attendance improved teachers’ syllabus coverage. A majority of the schools are completing the syllabus coverage in time. The teachers are now able to do revision as they prepare students for examinations and promotion to the next grades. The meeting of deadlines has created a positive culture among the teachers in the schools. The teachers now look at meeting the deadlines set by the schools as a good thing that is making them more responsible. Lastly the strategies being used to monitor teachers attendance on their duties has resulted into impressive performance of teacher in their duties. Based on the findings and Conclusions of the study, it is recommended that TPAD tool for monitoring teachers on time management should be emphasized. The practice should be borrowed and applied to other areas of school operations.

This study was triggered by the Teachers Sercice Commission (TSC) coming up with teachers performance appraisal strategies to appraise teachers and administrators in its employment, but the program has not fully realized the objective of evaluating teachers performance and initiate professional development.  There has been a stiff resistance from teachers on the use of appraisal tool terming it as forced appraisal. The study, therefore, sought to establish whether there is a relationship between appraisal and reward/compensation, examine how setting of standards and targets influences teachers perfomance, determine how measuring and monitoring teachers work on regular basis affect their performance and find out the effect of quality of work on performance of teachers in public secondary schools in Kiambu County. The target population was 3,479 teachers in 277 public secondary schools in Kiambu County. The study was conducted in 22 secondary schools in 11 sub counties comprising TSC teachers and administrators with a population of 686.  58 teachers and 22 head teachers, totaling to 80 representing 12% were selected from the accessible population of 686 teachers using systematic random sampling. The study established that standards/targets, measuring and monitoring performance managing quality of work and reward/pay affects teacher performance positively and significantly. The study concludes that setting standards and target allows schools and the teaching staff to better measure their progress helping to keep them motivated and accountable. Measuring and monitoring teacher performance ensures that information is gathered so that judgments can be made and questions answered accordingly. Performance appraisal strategies are critical to satisfying the performance of teacher and retaining their future loyalty and teachers are satisfied with the extrinsic rewards provided from the organization like: pay, bonuses, allowances. The study recommends that for the management of schools to achieve goal alignment in the teaching staff, they must first clearly communicate their school’s strategic objectives across the entire school. The school should have a way of monitoring their teacher which must be developed in a systematic monitoring and evaluation of the class and the work of teachers. On managing the quality of work, the study recommends that schools match tasks to Skills, communicate effectively, keep goals clear & focused, give incentives, train and develop their teachers and the study recommends that the school management should take interest in the professional growth to increase the performance level of the teachers. The study focused on Critical analysis of Fulani herdsmen crisis and its impact on national development has perceived by literate citizens. A descriptive survey design was adopted which enabled the researchers to collect and analyze data from a sample of the entire population without any manipulations. The target population for this study was made up of Universities and College of Education Lecturers in Rivers State. A sample size of one hundred (100) Lecturers was used for the study, which was selected through purposive and random sampling techniques. The Instrument was validated and it was subjected to content reliability using test-reset method with Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The reliability coefficient obtained 0.87. Three null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were analyzed using t-test. Findings showed that there was a significant difference in the perception of University of College of Education lecturers on the causes, economics effects and impact of Fulani herdsmen and Farmers crisis on national development in Nigeria. It was recommended that Federal government should engage peace and conflict resolution experts in dealing with issues concerning Fulani herdsmen and Farmers crises and that ranching method of cattle rearing location across the country while the herdsmen should be given needed training for effective and efficient management of the ranching.

<p>The unrests witnessed in 2018 reminded Kenyans of past bloody episodes, which, though rare, caused pain, loss and destruction. Several  parents are likely to still be struggling to come to terms with the loss and destruction of those events. Unfortunately, despite several studies that have tried to investigate and recommend solutions for these menaces, this is still freshly being experienced in the country. This scenario informed the study with the purpose of investigating the role of school politics in management of unrests in public secondary schools in  Kenya. The study was guided by conflict theory and theory of symbolic interactionism, and a descriptive survey design with a target population of the 57 public secondary schools in Taita Taveta County, Kenya. The sample consisted of 194 headteachers, heads of departments and Board of Management members. Stratified random sampling was used to select respondents. The study used a questionnaire and interviews to collect data.
