First I explain the need for environmental ethics in general and in Malaysia in particular. We have been severely lagging ethically regarding the new capabilities and responsibilities we have in affecting the environment in many ways, last not least through our life styles. Therefore it is important to develop environmental ethics education based on both philosophical and religious ethics. A major challenge is to move between tradition and modernity and in an ethical spectrum ranging from theocentrism to enlightened anthropocentrism. Unsustainable patterns like overconsumption and overpopulation have to be addressed as well as the role of active citizenship. Recommended educational approaches include critical thinking, multiple perspectives learning and the learning of values.

Behavioral models are considered in the paper as the link between the description of the institutional structure of the economic system and the formation of macro-aggregates, reflecting the results of its operations. The degree of homogeneity of the private sector’s economic environment and complementary goals of private entities and government regulation are noted as basic characteristics of behavioral models. The author examines the differences in the estimates of these characteristics as one of the most important factors underpinning the architecture of modern macroeconomic models and their practical implications.

This chapter analyzes the growth of OTC derivatives before the global financial crisis of 2008 and the role of credit default swaps, in particular, in the near collapse of the global economy. It begins by exploring the basic characteristics of derivatives used as risk management instruments by investors to hedge against or exploit the volatility of asset prices. The analysis further reveals that the pre-crisis period was characterized by a broad-based consensus favoring deregulated markets and globally designed private rules. While not always unanimously supported, permissive public regulatory choices were often encouraged by interest group lobbying, the market-friendly views of many domestic authorities, and concerns about regulatory uncertainty and international competitiveness.

Abstract Background Management of heavily calcified coronary arteries is still a major challenge in interventional cardiology. Inadequate stent expansion in calcific lesions is the single most important predictor of stent thrombosis and in-stent restenosis. Rotational atherectomy (RA) is an important tool to modify the calcium burden but is associated with limitations and requires specific skills. Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) is a novel technique to treat calcified stenotic lesions and has been proposed as an alternative to RA with promising results. Case summary We report a case of a patient with severely calcified right coronary artery stenosis successfully treated with combination of RA and IVL. Discussion In this case, we demonstrate that the RA and IVL are complementary strategies, not sufficient on their own and not alternative to each other.

One of basic characteristics of the regular bipedal walk of humanoid robots is the maintenance of their dynamic balance during the walk, whereby a decisive role is played by the unpowered degrees of freedom arising at the foot–ground contact. Hence, the role of the Zero-Moment Point (ZMP) as an indicator of dynamic balance is indispensable. This paper gives a detailed discussion of some basic theoretical assumptions related to the ZMP in the light of imprecise, and even incorrect, interpretations that have recently appeared, and which have led to some erroneous conclusions. Examples are given to show some erroneous basic attitudes and the genesis of some of them is indicated. It is also pointed out that in the domain of bipedal walk there are still notions that are not clearly defined and their meanings differentiated in some related branches of science and engineering. One of the examples is dynamic balance and stability, which are often used interchangeably.
