For an advanced trisonic wind tunnel of a straight-flow type with a test section size of 1.2 × 1.2, intended for ground tests of rocket-space and aviation aircraft models, we implemented a gas-dynamic design of the circuit and did numerical simulation of the flow for the main supersonic regimes (M = 2, M = 4). The gas-dynamic design of the wind tunnel circuit was carried out on the basis of techniques developed at TsAGI and operating experience of existing facilities. The study considers both traditional configurations of the duct with the bending of the walls of all elements, i.e., nozzle, test section and diffuser in the XY plane, and alternative design developments with the bending of the diffuser walls in the XZ plane. When carrying out numerical studies in all areas of the wind tunnel, the ANSYS Fluent software package was used to solve the Navier --- Stokes equations for viscous and heat-conducting air using the turbulence model, i.e., Spalart --- Allmaras, SST. The paper investigates the effect of the wall opening angle, compensating the increasing thickness of boundary-layer longwise displacement, on the flow characteristics; shows the possibilities of obtaining a sufficiently uniform flow with the Mach number accuracy ΔM = ± 0.005 in the area of the model, and analyzes the influence of geometric parameters and boundary conditions on the efficiency of the supersonic diffuser

The rectangular parallelepiped explicit difference schemes for the numerical solution of the complete built system of Navier-Stokes equations. These solutions describe the three-dimensional flow of a compressible viscous heat-conducting gas in a rising swirling flows, provided the forces of gravity and Coriolis. This assumes constancy of the coefficient of viscosity and thermal conductivity. The initial conditions are the features that are the exact analytical solution of the complete Navier-Stokes equations. Propose specific boundary conditions under which the upward flow of gas is modeled by blowing through the square hole in the upper surface of the computational domain. A variant of parallelization algorithm for calculating gas dynamic and energy characteristics. The results of calculations of gasdynamic parameters dependency on the speed of the vertical blowing by the time the flow of a steady state flow.

Bottom hinged Oscillating Wave Surge Converters (OWSCs) are efficient devices for extracting power from ocean waves. There is limited knowledge about wave slamming on such devices. This paper deals with numerical studies of wave slamming on an oscillating flap to investigate the mechanism of slamming events. In our model, the Navier–Stokes equations are discretized using the Finite Volume method with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) approach for interface capturing. Waves are generated by a flap-type wave maker in the numerical wave tank, and the dynamic mesh method is applied to model the motion of the oscillating flap. Basic mesh and time step refinement studies are performed. The flow characteristics in a slamming event are analysed based on numerical results. Various simulations with different flap densities, water depths and wave amplitudes are performed for a better understanding of the slamming.

Abstract The results are presented for a cycle of experimental investigations of flow field characteristics (static pressure distribution, static pressure fluctuations, upwash, boundary-layer parameters) in the perforated test section of the transonic TsAGI T-128 Wind Tunnel. The investigations concern the effect of nozzle shape, wall open-area ratio, Mach and Reynolds numbers on the above-outlined flow characteristics. During the tests, the main Wind-tunnel drive power is measured. Optimal parameters of the nozzle shape and test section perforation are obtained to minimise acoustic perturbations in the test section and their non-uniformity in frequency, static pressure field non-uniformity, nozzle and test section drag and, accordingly, required main Wind-tunnel drive power.

The Francis turbine is a kind of reaction turbines, which means that the potential energy of water converted to rotational kinetic energy. In this study, the flow characteristics have been investigated numerically in a Francis turbine on the 15 MW hydropower generation with various blade profiles (NACA 65 and NACA 16 series) and discharge angles (14°, 15°, 17°, and 18°), using the commercial code, ANSYS CFX. The k-ω SST turbulence model is employed in the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The computing domain includes the spiral casing, guide vanes, and draft tube, which are discretized with a full three-dimensional mesh system of unstructured tetrahedral shapes. The results showed that the change of blade profiles and discharge angles significantly influenced the performance of the Francis turbine.

A numerical study is conducted to examine the flow characteristics of the inkjet print-head with special attentions on the refilling process. By solving the full set of three-dimensional transient Navier-Stokes equations and considering the process of bubble growth and collapse as a movable membrane, it is found that the double refilling channels can reduce the flow surge phenomenon considerably due to the imposed friction. However, for the additional cylinder obstacle placed at the filling channel, the flow surge phenomenon is still present. This is because of the jet-like flow along the cylinder leading to a collision and eruption of fluid angled towards the plane boundary with the presence of cylinder. The calculated results also indicated the flow surge can be moderately suppressed for fluid having larger dynamic viscosity.

Computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel test are two main technical means to examine the aerodynamic performance of airfoil and two-dimensional(2-D) configuration. Two dimensional wind tunnel tests use commonly wake flow field measurement to integrate for drag of airfoil or two-dimensional configuration, but the integral formulas are based on certain assumptions and of certain bounds of application. In this paper, based on Navier-Stokes equations numerical simulation and two dimensional wind tunnel testing, the drag measuring technique for high lift configuration in low speed wind tunnel is researched. Navier-Stokes equations is solved for the flow around a multi-element airfoil, the wake flow characteristics behind the multi-element airfoil and the assumptions for conventional drag measuring method are analyzed, then a new more precise drag formula for two dimensional wind tunnel test is put forward; Based on the simulation results of multi-element airfoil flow, it’s aerodynamic performance is obtained respectively by integrating the surface pressure and friction drag, and computing with the information of wake flow according to conventional and newly proposed drag calculation formulas, and the three results are compared to verify the accuracy of the new drag formula; The wind tunnel test is carried out to ascertain the accuracy of the new drag formula. It is shown from the results that in the high-lift case the conventional drag formula with the wake information is of many limitations and must be improved, and the new drag formula presented in this paper is more accurate because of consideration of the wake flow characteristics of airfoil or two-dimensional configuration.

A 3D numerical model named NEWTANK is employed to investigate the flow motion and sediment transport in grouped spur dikes system. This model is based on the Navier-Stokes equations, adopting the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method to track the free surface motion, while the solid is described by using the Porous Media Method (PMM). The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is applied to capture turbulence. In sediment calculation parts, the suspended load and bedload are treated separately but combined together to update bed variation eventually. The finite difference form and Two-step Projection Method are employed in the process of discretizing the governing equation. Several carefully selected flume experiments are introduced to verify this model's reliability before its application on the simulation of grouped spur dike case, and detailed flow characteristics and sediment properties are analyzed afterwards.

Experimental studies were carried out in the 0.6 m×0.6 m continuous transonic wind tunnel of CARDC in order to investigate the flow characteristics of the slotted test section. Experimental results show that the root-mean-square deviation of axial Mach number in the model area is above 0.01 when the test section Mach number is above 1.0.Numerical simulation under the same conditions to investigate the flow characteristics of the slotted section, together with the experimental studies indicate tow phenomena may directly cause the Mach number fluctuation. Firstly, a straight section was installed to connect the nozzle and the test section in the wind tunnel. Weak shock waves due to the curvature discontinuity at the joint of the test section and the straight section contribute to Mach number fluctuation. Secondly, the open-area ratio of both the upper and lower wall of test section, each with 8 slots, is of 10%. The larger porosity leads to stronger expansion waves in the acceleration zone located at the inlet of the test section. The flow was over accelerated because of the stronger expansion wave and thus fluctuate the flow field severely. Two measures were taken to improve the flow quality of the slotted test section based on the above-mentioned analysis: ①Flexible plate instead of solid straight plate was installed to bridge nozzle and test section to eliminate the curvature discontinuity; ②Decreasing the open-area ratio of the upper and lower test section wall to 6% and the number of slots to 6. Numerical and experimental results show that the Mach number fluctuation in the model area was suppressed to a satisfactory degree.

This paper presents the results of a numerical study on flow characteristics over circular, square, and diamond cross-sectional cylinders. Investigations are performed in a two-dimensional domain using the finite volume discretization method solver for Reynolds number, Re = 20 000. Unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations with Spalart–Allmaras turbulence model have been used as a turbulence closure. After the validation of the simulations with the available experimental data from the open literature, global characteristics of the flow field around different shaped cylinders near the wall have been presented. Effects of wall proximity on cylinders are investigated for four different gap width (G) to cylinder width (D) ratios.
