Assim, o presente estudo buscou evidenciar a importância histórica do registro das macroalgas e a necessidade de mais estudos para ampliar o conhecimento sobre as macroalgas que compõem o Maranhão.ABSTRACTBiological collections stand out for being a source of data on different organisms, presenting a great and inestimated historical and cultural value. In addition, the present study aimed to record he historical importance of the existing macroalgae collection in the Herbarium of Maranhão (MAR) due to the need to preserve this collection. The ficological collection was organized by the professor Maria Marlúcia, and started with the collection of seaweed Catenella caespitosa (Florideophyceae) in 1985. From that period, it started the survey of marine benthic macroalgae in the state of Maranhão, being donated to Herbarium MAR in 2013. Although the coast of the state of Maranhão is the second largest coast in Brazil, the algae studies are not proportional to the coastal extension of Maranhão state. Thus, the present study sought to highlight the historical importance from the record of macroalgae and the need for further studies to expand knowledge about the macro algae that compound Maranhão state.

This paper exhibites species composition and distribution of marine seaweed at 10 sites of Co To and Thanh Lan islands in May 2019. The studies record 76 species of marine algae in the area, belonging to four divisions: Cyanophytes, Rhodophytes, Ochrophytes and Chlorophytes. Among them, five species are classified into Cyanophytes (comprising 6.6% of total species); thirty-four species into Rhodophytes (44.7%); twenty-one species into Ochrophytes/Phaeophytes (27.6%) and sixteen species into Chlorophytes (21.1%). The species composition of marine seaweeds in Co To and Thanh Lan shows significant differences as follows: 22 species (sites number 4 and 10) to 58 species (site number 2) and the average value is 38.7 species per site. Sørensen similarity coefficient fluctuates from 0.33 (sites number 5 and 10) to 0.84 (sites number 1 and 3) and the average value is 0.53. The current investigations show that four species of twenty-one species are collected in the littoral zone and forty-two species in the sub-littoral zone (in which there are thirteen species distributed in both littoral zone and sub-littoral zone). The algal flora in Co To and Thanh Lan is characterized by subtropics.

Chapter 2 brings new information to Florida’s sparse historical record of the Sheppard-Towner Maternity and Infancy Protection Act, initiated from 1922 to 1929. To provide expert administration of the program, public health nurse Laurie Jean Reid arrived, armed with a reformer’s vision augmented by a large dose of cultural chauvinism. Reid soon declared bringing federal initiatives into the state would be an uphill climb when the intertwining problems of race and poverty mired the state in its backwardness. The task of establishing authority over the predominantly black midwives and bringing health improvements to mothers rested with Reid’s team of public health nurses. They found innovative ways to bridge the communities they served with policies that addressed the threats of infection and the high infant and maternal mortality levels. Meeting these cultural and environmental challenges became not only a test of Reid’s judgment, but also a trial of how well the nurses operating under the Sheppard-Towner Act effectively imposed rules and regulations to a mostly rural population without creating racial and class tension.

Prussian Conservatism was not an ideology comparable to those which have breathed into every crevice of twentieth century totalitarian states. It was not really an ideology at all, if that term is understood to mean a system of thought enforced by the state so as to give every human act a political meaning. The Prussian conservatives, conditioned by an aristocratic disdain for a political rationale, were unable to agree on a uniform principle of political conduct. Shades of meaning, based largely on the balance struck between religion and political realism, persisted in coloring the conservative temperament. Yet by the fourth decade of the nineteenth century, Prussian conservatism had become a coherent body of thought distinct from liberalism, democracy, or socialism. Its historical importance became assured, when, at Bismarck's hands, Prussian conservatism entered wholeheartedly into the making of what the liberal historian, Erich Eyck, has called “German constitutionalism,” that is a system of politics respectful of authority, but equally disdainful of democracy and absolutism, in which the practical conduct of government may be guided by moral principles in an irrational world.

US involvement in Palestine, which has been long and complex, has generated a massive historical record that needs to be understood in order to locate not only some of the origins of today’s tragic situation but also to chart possible paths to change. The power of AIPAC, the pro-Israel lobby, on US Middle East policy is well known; its background and relationship to the US fundamentalist Christian Right, less so. Starting from the nineteenth century, this article traces key elements and interests involved in the making of US policy, including AIPAC, the oil industry and the ‘Arabists’ of the State Department.

This article focuses on the process of monument listing, done by conservators of Vilnius in interwar Poland and which provided the monuments state protection. Between 1931 and 1939, monument conservators made 202 decisions confirming monumental value to various objects of architecture, urbanistics, archeology and nature. In the text the listing and evaluation process is described by analyzing the register of monuments and the decisions it was based on. The documents from the archive of the Art Department of Vilnius voivodeship are used in the article. The analysis of the register of monuments is based on statistical methods. Interpretation and evaluation are based on analytical and comparative methods. The research leads to findings that monument listing was dominated by architecture. Objects of nature were announced monuments based on their cultural value. Officially the status of a monument was given on the grounds of its aesthetics, age or documental value. However, the inner motive was Polishness. Thus, the most frequent monuments were baroque Catholic churches. The patriotic context is also seen in nature protection. The process of monument listing was led by only one expert – a conservator of monuments. The monument status and state protection depended on their interests, expertise and power. The conservator cooperated only with a small group of Polish authority and intelligentsia, leaving the majority of society out of this heritage process. The decision confirming monumental value was a way to control and have an impact directly on the monument’s existence, indirectly – on the discourse of memory. The monument listing reveals values and identities of a Polish art historian working for the state. Consequently, these values and identities were projected for the whole society as universal. This type of discourse on heritage, conception and practice was common in Western countries in the 20th c.

The article analyzes some paradigmatic cases concerning the religious or cultural value of food which have been brought to the attention of the monitoring bodies instituted by the European Convention on Human Rights. Problems may arise in particular when individuals (e.g. prisoners, hospitalized people, military personnel, children at school) have to rely upon the State to provide sustenance. However, the Convention contains no reference to cultural or religious aspects of food nor to cultural rights in general. From this analysis it emerges that a right to "cultural" food could be framed in "wider" rights (e.g. freedom of thought, conscience and religion, right to respect for private and family life, protection of property, prohibition of torture) as it is an aspect of them. While it is clear that not all dietary choices deserve protection and abuses should be avoided, the different interests of the State should be balanced against the interests of individuals who need special food for religious, conscience or cultural reasons. The balance has to be fair and this includes the possibility for States to offer valid dietary alternatives, although in some cases, as for many other human rights, States will continue to be able to restrict the rights of individuals on different grounds.

The Amos Spafford farmstead (33Wo50) of Port Miami in northwest Ohio disappeared from the historical record after the War of 1812. Port Miami, a Franco-American village, was the first U.S. federal customs facility established in Ohio in 1805. It was destroyed in 1812 by a British and Native American detachment led by Captain Peter Latouche Chambers (British 41st Regiment of Foot), the Shawnee leader Tecumseh, and the Wyandot leader Roundhead. Port Miami’s destruction became lost over the years to the historical memory and consciousness of Ohio. Salvage excavations of the Spafford farmstead (1810–1823) in 1977 and its history provide an archaeological window within which to view Port Miami’s obliteration and its recovery to the community heritage of the state.

Abstract:Background and Aims: Due to the lack of knowledge about macroalgae in Tabasco’s coastal lagoons, this work determined the macroalgae diversityassociated to the El Carmen lagoon, municipality Cardenas, and contributes to the biological and ecological knowledge of the state of Tabasco, Mexico. Methods: Three samplings were carried out in an annual cycle from 2015 to 2016, during the rainy, northern wind and dry seasons. The organismswere collected manually, fixated with seawater and 4% formalin, identified, and deposited in the UJAT and FCME (UNAM) herbaria.Key results: Twenty-one species of marine macroalgae were recorded, of which three are new records for the state of Tabasco. The Rhodophyta divisionwith the families Gracilariaceae and Rhodomelaceae had the highest species richness and Gracilaria blodgetti was the most abundant species. The greatest diversity and abundance appeared in the northern winds season. Conclusions: There is an increase to 125 species in the number of records of Rhodophyta species and 28 in the Ochrophyta for Tabasco. Hence, it issuggested to extend the sampling time and perform systematic work in an annual cycle, in order to have a better representation of the diversity andseasonality of the macroalgae in the El Carmen lagoon.Key words: coastal lagoon, diversity, marine algae, seasonality.
