Introduction. Preserving and restoring the health of children in difficult situations is one of the priority tasks of modern Pediatrics. Therefore, taking into account the characteristics of the health status of children in a prolonged stressful situation associated with a military conflict is extremely important for the full and timely assistance to this contingent. Purpose of the study To conduct a comprehensive assessment of the health status of 7-9 years old children living in the military conflict zone in the Donbas region. Materials and methods. We examined 234 children (of 7-9 years), of which 123 people living in the war zone in the Donbas region. A year after the outbreak of military conflict there was carried out an assessment of the health status of children, including an assessment of psycho-emotional status (methods adapted to primary school age), an analysis of medical documentation (forms 025/U-04 and No. 112/U) with an assessment of the incidence rate, physical development, as well as the study of the autonomic nervous system (methods A.M. Wayne, cardiointervalography). Results All children in the territory of the military conflict were established to have violations of the psycho-emotional and cognitive spheres, expressed in signs of post-stress disorder and maladaptation. There were revealed alterations in the vegetative status, an increase in the frequency of registration of somatic pathology, as well as a change in anthropometric and physiometric indices of physical development were revealed. Conclusion Identified violations in the state of health of children living in the zone of military conflict dictate the need for dynamic monitoring and rehabilitation measures with the integrated participation of medical, psychological, pedagogical and social specialists

Background: The innovative form of organizing schooling in the mode of dynamic postures providing for alternation of standing and sitting postures at each lesson is implemented in order to prevent detrimental health effects of the long-term stationary sitting posture, reduce static and educational fatigue, preserve and strengthen health in educational institutions. Our objective was to assess the health status of primary school children studying in dynamic postures. Materials and methods: We assessed the health status of 174 pupils aged 7–10 in the first to third grades of primary school studying in the mode of dynamic postures. The health data was obtained from their personal medical records. The assessment was carried out in accordance with the comprehensive methodology for assessing health of children and adolescents based on the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. Physical development was measured using regression scales. Results: We established that visual impairment (137.9‰) and musculoskeletal disorders (109.2‰) ranked highest in the structure of functional disorders (FD) among the first to third graders. The prevalence of functional disorders of the circulatory and respiratory system was 86.2‰ and 80.5‰, respectively. Musculoskeletal conditions dominated in the structure of chronic diseases (63.0%), the prevalence being 293.1‰. These were followed by diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue and gastrointestinal diseases with the prevalence rate of 46.0‰ each. The total prevalence of functional abnormalities among the primary school first to third graders was 500.0‰ while the prevalence rate of chronic diseases was 465.5‰. Normal physical development was observed in 82.9% of the subjects. Overweight and obesity were detected in 11% and 0.6% of the children, respectively, while underweight, small and big height were measured in 3.1%, 1.8%, and 0.6% of the children, respectively. Conclusions: The comparative data analysis helped establish lower disease prevalence rates among the children studying in dynamic postures compared to those studying in the seated position. Our findings may serve as a scientific substantiation of efficiency of using the dynamic posture regime in order to maintain and improve health of schoolchildren.

This article examines the role played by the social worlds of primary school children in producing and reproducing a range of masculine identities. It describes the relatively gender-segregated nature of the culture of middle-childhood, arguing that the specific institutional context reinforces this segregation. The article outlines the range of masculinities documented in the primary school playground and examines the ways in which both the school institution and the peer-group define and police the boundaries of masculinity. The school negatively labels dominant, assertive males through certain institutional practices and attitudes. Certain boys with more androgynous styles are of higher status with peers in this context. The impact of other identities on the relative status of boys is examined. It is shown how those boys who are differently abled are of lower status. Peers perceive them as less socially mature. Their relative invisibility and stigmatisation is partly a consequence of institutional practices.

AbstractThis study focuses on the impact of a prevention program regarding dog bites in children. As a consequence of our previous investigation in 2005, we have initiated a child safety program for primary school children starting January 2008 until present to teach children how to avoid dog attacks and how to behave in case of an attack. In our retrospective study, we analyzed all patients younger than 15 years presenting with dog-related injuries between 2014 and 2018. As the main indicator for success of the prevention measures taken, we have defined the severity of injury in comparison to our previous study. Out of 296 children with dog-related injuries, 212 (71.6%) had sustained a dog bite. In the vast majority (n = 195; 92%), these patients presented with minor injuries; the extremities were most commonly affected (n = 100; 47%). Injuries to the head (n = 95; 45%) and trunk (n = 18; 8%) were less frequent. The proportion of severe injuries (8%) was significantly lower compared to our previous study, where 26% of children presented with severe injuries necessitating surgical intervention, while the number of patients requiring in-hospital treatment declined from 27.5% in the period 1994–2003 to 9.0% in the period between 2014 and 2018 (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Teaching of primary school children may effectively reduce the injury severity of dog bites. What is Known:• Dog bites are a substantial healthcare problem especially in children. What is New:• This study shows that a broad-based prevention program for primary school children can effectively decrease the severity but not the frequency of dog bite injuries in children.

Parameters of physical development are known to be informative indicators of health status and adaptation processes, as well as markers of social, hygienic and environmental well-being both in healthy children and those with various pathological conditions. The purpose of this article was to study the characteristics of the physical status of children with intellectual disabilities. Materials and methods. We examined 168 children of primary school age (7–11 years) studying in secondary schools of Krasnoyarsk. The subjects were divided into two groups: the first group included 54 children with intellectual disability (F70, F71 according to ICD-10), the second group included 114 children without intellectual disability. Anthropometric characteristics and level of physical development were studied taking into account regional centile tables. The harmony of physical development was assessed using the Quetelet index. Results. The physical development of children with intellectual disability is characterized by a lag in anthropometric characteristics compared with intellectually healthy children: body length was 133.0 and 137.3 cm (p = 0.048), head circumference 51.0 and 52.5 cm (p = 0.002) respectively. The first group also had a statistically significantly lower percentage of children with harmonious physical development (37 %, p = 0.045) against the background of pronounced disharmony (underweight in 31.5 %, excess body weight in 31.5 % of children) compared to their healthy peers (harmonious development in 55 %, underweight in 16 %, overweight in 29 % of children). Further research into the constitution of children with intellectual disability can form the basis for the development of corrective measures, taking into account the specific typological characteristics of children in this group. The conflict in the Eastern part of Ukraine and the growing geopolitical tensions have had a significant impact on the economy and society of the country. As a result, it deepened the recession and diverged from the planned development indicators. In particular, this concerns international reserves of the National Bank of Ukraine and the country's budget deficit. Multilateral economic changes, exacerbated by the impact of hostilities in the Eastern part of the country have transformed the structure of socio-demographic processes in Ukraine. Armed confrontation causes a continuous deterioration of demographic and economic indicators of development not only of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, but also has an impact on the whole country. This confrontation is also accompanied by the loss (destruction, theft, etc.) of public assets. The estimated cost of destroyed components of industrial, communal, social, transport, energy and other infrastructure are indicative due to the inability to inspect objects located within the territory controlled by terrorist groups. The conflict has also affected the investment attractiveness of the country, which accelerates the creation of a depressed nature of country’s development. Therefore, in the context of hostility in the Eastern Ukraine, it is important to understand and study its destabilizing impact, not only on domestic economic and demographic indicators, but also on the volume of foreign investment, which will allow us to understand the level of country’s involvement in the global investment space and the real impact of military action on the population and on international economic affairs of Ukraine. As a result of this scientific research, the population and GDP forecast have been conducted. It is worth noting that the forecast itself based on regression mathematical modelling which includes past data and can be accurate if current conditions are stable in the future.

This paper describes an interactive storytelling system, accessible through the SoftBank robotic platforms NAO and Pepper. The main contribution consists of the interpretation of the story characters by humanoid robots, obtained through the definition of appropriate cognitive models, relying on the ACT-R cognitive architecture. The reasoning processes leading to the story evolution are based on the represented knowledge and the suggestions of the listener in critical points of the story. They are disclosed during the narration, to make clear the dynamics of the story and the feelings of the characters. We analyzed the impact of such externalization of the internal status of the characters to set the basis for future experimentation with primary school children.

AbstractA degree of controversy and debate exists about the best educational experiences to fulfil the potential of gifted students. Special class placement can give good educational experiences and opportunities for gifted students. However, Marsh and Parker (1984) described the big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLPE) where equally able students have lower academic self-concepts in high-ability schools than in low-ability schools. Self-concept is an important factor in determining academic achievement. The place of motivation in academic achievement is well documented (Ames, 1992; Ames & Archer, 1988; Blumenfeld, 1992; Dweck, 1986) and determined by mastery or performance-goal orientation (Dweck, 1986). The motivation will ultimately have a bearing on both achievement and self-concept. The purpose of this research was to determine the interrelationship of self-concept, motivation and achievement in gifted primary school children in a variety of groupings from a parent's perspective.
