The purpose of this paper is to begin an exploration into high-skills lifelong learning in the field of business and management, referred to as executive and professional education (EPE).  Several additional undertakings were necessary, including: discovering methods of valuing knowledge to a region, state or country, and establishing why participants in EPE programs enroll in them. To support this inquiry two research questions were developed, as follows:  1. What are the components of relevant EPE? 2. What motivates participants to take part in EPE? An exploratory case study was written exploring the intricacies of developing a successful EPE department.  This exploratory case study served as a basis for developing a survey, administered to participants in EPE to determine reasons for their participation.  This final survey was conducted in the classroom. The researchers believe that the findings and conclusions will be of value to practitioners involved in EPE, as well as to academics studying this area of business education.  This research exercise has assisted the researchers in being more effective in managing and developing EPE within their own university.  As professions and skills are made obsolete in the knowledge economy the need for continued high level lifelong learning becomes increasing important to the sustainability and viability of local, regional, state and national economies.

This chapter explores the connection between liberal and professional education. It suggests ways to infuse broader learning objectives into business curricula as a foundation for lifelong learning and practice. Drawing on the liberal art of rhetoric, the chapter shows the use of Plato’s dialogue, the Gorgias, in an MBA class as a case study on ethical leadership. Rhetoric teaches leaders to listen and adjust to various constituencies and to develop pragmatic and persuasive policies that benefit both the organization and the community. Through such pedagogical methods and content, business schools can raise larger issues and provide students with ways to think critically, assisting the next generation of business executives to develop their moral characters and align their behaviors and decisions with justice rather than personal advantage.

An exploratory case study approach was used to describe remote tutoring in biochemistry and general chemistry with students who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH). Data collected for analysis were based on the observations of the participant tutor. The research questions guiding this study included (1) How is active learning accomplished in synchronous, remote tutoring for chemistry and biochemistry with students who are D/HH? and (2) Why might active learning be important to include in synchronous, remote tutoring for this student population? Findings included that (a) students approached remote tutoring with the same questions and materials they brought to in-person tutoring and (b) the degree to which tutoring materials could be imbedded into a remote session influenced the session’s efficiency and the ability of students to actively participate in remote tutoring.

The importance of the concept of “identity” in the context of language learning is unassailable. Stemming from this premise, the current study is intended to explore the identity conflicts of a group of Yemeni learners who were studying English, as well as the techniques and strategies used to mitigate and/or lessen the conflicts between their actual identity and the identity associated with the target language, i.e., English. This research project used a qualitative exploratory case study research design with a sample of 20 students who were requested to write their journal diaries. Following that, semi-structured interviews were conducted using the double-sampling technique to select 10 of the previously sampled students who were proven to have written the most stimulating and intriguing journal entries. From the results of the study, tangible identity conflicts between the Yemeni culture and society at large and the implied behaviors and conventions accompanying the intensive study of the English language became apparent. The students exhibit a high level of motivation and they also exert their efforts using different techniques and strategies to excel at the learning and/or acquisition of the speaking skill of the English language. These conflicts may be consciously or subconsciously realized by the language learners, but what has been proven is that their attitudes, motivation and general inclinations towards the goal of speaking with a native or a native-like accent are unquestionably genuine. Lastly, the study suggested or recommended a revamp of the current textbooks giving teachers more training sessions in order to improve their individual repertoire, as well as a higher degree of awareness upon the part of the Yemeni society at large that these conflicts can interfere with the strong motivations, both aspirational and actual, to achieve the learning outcomes of the nation’s most promising future leaders and pioneers.

Empregabilidade. Profissionalizante.   Analysis of the professional feature of the technical courses of IFMG - Campus Avançado Itabirito Abstract This paper aims to present results of a field research carried out with former students of technical courses offered by the IFMG - Campus Avançado Itabirito regarding the professional feature of courses. The motivation for this research is due to the authors' perception, developed by teaching in technical courses, with regard to the low demand for technical level internships and the immediate entry into higher education courses. Thus, the research aimed to show the numbers and the main reasons pointed out by the former students in their choice. The analysis of the results shows that although most alumni disagree with the mandatory supervised internship to conclude the secondary education, many of them understand that the internship is a very important activity in their professional qualification and employability. They point out justifications for not search for internship during the course or after its conclusion, since the supervised internship component is optional in the curriculum. The research also showed a high level of interest in continuing academic and professional education, as well as the diversity of interest areas, classified into three groups: technology, humanities and health. Despite this diversity, there was a trend towards to the higher education in areas related to the technical course. Finally, this paper presents reflective analyzes of results and proposals are given in order to provide the expansion of interest and conditions for conducting an internship. In this way, there is an expectation of contributing to the improvement of the technical and professional qualification of the technical high school students. Keywords: Supervised Internship. Employability. Professionalizing.

Being knowledge management crucial to companies, it seems reasonable to understand an organisation intellectual capital. The three leading components of intellectual capital (human capital, structural capital and relational capital), are intrinsically bounded to the organisational ICT system, organisational structure, and to workers personal mastery. Nonetheless, in order to evolve organisational intellectual capital it is required a high level of personal mastery, which is clearly bounded to human resources. Therefore, this chapter aims to promote a theoretical and empirical discussion in order to understand the diverse dimensions between renewal, personal mastery, and employee wellbeing within a knowledge-based organisation (Finnish ICT-company). For that, the chapter is divided into six major sections: the research questions; theoretical framework and main concepts; the case study organisation and research methods applied; findings; discussion; and future research.

In this work the WIHIC (What is Happening In this Classroom) instrument was used to assess the types of interactions, from students' perspectives, that occur in two science classrooms in Trinidad & Tobago. It was the first attempt to use the WIHIC instrument in the research context. An exploratory case study research design in the quantitative paradigm was employed in the assessment. The findings reveal that classroom interactions were dominated by student-centered interactions that mapped onto the student cohesiveness and cooperation scales of the WIHIC instrument. A high level of interaction in the investigation and involvement scales was also determined. What was surprising however, was the low level of teacher supportive interactions and interactions which demonstrated teacher impartiality as reported from students' perspective.

This case study aims to identify the demand for professional education courses in the city of Itaporã, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the year 2020, offering a cross-cutting diagnosis of this educational panorama; for this purpose, the technique of guided interview in loco was implemented with the action coordinating agents designated by the municipal administration. All those involved were aware of their free and voluntary collaboration. During the entire collection phase, the information was recorded through a free association chart which, later revised, gave basis to the identification that in the disclosure phase there is no time to contact the possible students taking into account that, besides the districts, the municipality aggregates a vast rural region. In addition, the fact that the course is offered only at night, ends up discouraging the participation of some potential students who, despite showing interest, need to pay attention to their labor routines. It is concluded that a greater concern is needed to create a database of course graduates in order to establish a periodic sense capable of identifying professional life after the course, in addition to profiling the demand for skilled labor in order to detect which training is important at the moment.
