Previous studies on the relationship between bank restructuring and financial performance reveal conflicting results with few studies establishing the effect of financial services. Few studies have investigated the causality between bank restructuring and financial performance as intervened by deposits and customer loans. The positivism research philosophy and descriptive and inferential causal research design were used in this study. The hypothetical view of the study was that the relationship between bank restructuring and financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya is not intervened by deposits and customer loans. The 39 commercial banks that were consistently in business for the period 2002 to 2014 were included in the study. Bank restructuring was disaggregated into financial restructuring, capital restructuring, operational restructuring and asset restructuring. The empirical findings were as follows: There was a significant direct association between bank restructuring and financial performance which was intervened by deposits and customer loans as proxies for financial services. Deposits were found to be significant in intervening the relationship between bank restructuring and financial performance. Customer loans on the other had was not found to significantly intervene the relationship between bank restructuring and financial performance. A composite variable of financial services denoting the aggregate of the intervention of deposits and customer loans showed a significant intervening effect on the relationship between bank restructuring and financial performance. The study outcome therefore reveals that the hypothesis that the relationship between bank restructuring and financial performance is not intervened by financial services is rejected. The conclusion is that banks should focus more on deposits to caution against a decrease in financial performance. Additionally customer loans should not be ignored since the intervention though insignificant tends to negatively influence financial performance. The implication is that when banks focus more on the provision of financial services they are likely to compromise financial finance possibly because of the increased costs associated with providing financial services. Regulatory institutions such as the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and the Kenya Institute of Bankers can use the study results to enhance policy and prudential guidelines to increase profitability of the banks. The study recommends that there is need to increase financial services offered by banks to increase outreach other than improving profitability of banks.

PurposeThis study analyzed the moderating effect of bank size on the relationship between financial soundness and financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya.Design/methodology/approachThe study employed data from 39 commercial banks for ten years from 2009 to 2018. Panel data regression model was used to analyze data.FindingsThe study results established a negative moderating effect of bank size on the relationship between commercial banks' financial soundness and net interest margin (NIM) and return on assets (ROA) with the results indicating a correlation coefficient of −0.1699 and −0.218, respectively. However, an absence of moderating effect was established when return on equity (ROE) was used as a measure of financial performance.Practical implicationsThe paper finding recommends that banks' management and other policy makers should consider the effect of bank size while devising financial soundness policies to ensure optimal level of banks' financial soundness aimed at improving banks' financial performance. In addition, bankers associations should come up with policies to standardize asset quality management practices to ensure continuous positive performance of the banking sector.Originality/valueThe study shows the contribution and applicability of the theory of production in the banking sector.

The relationship between companies and society has been questioned for a long time. However, the effect of the motives behind CSR regarding the companies’ actual engagement with CSR has received little attention, especially in emerging markets. This paper tackles this issue for the first time using a sample of Jordanian companies. We explore the effect of two types of motives on the level of engagement in CSR: extrinsic motive (financial) and intrinsic motives (ethical and altruistic). The relationship between the company’s actual financial performance and CSR is also investigated. Primary data were collected using a questionnaire, distributed to Jordanian company’s managers in five sectors: pharmaceutical, technology and telecommunication, construction, farming, and financial services. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to depict the relationships. Results show that the intrinsic motives have a significant effect on CSR, while the extrinsic motive has none. When intrinsic motives were tested separately, results showed that the ethical motive had a significant effect, while the altruistic had no effect. In both cases, CSR was shown to be more significantly driven by the company’s financial performance. Different stakeholders such as policymakers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and investors may use the results of this study to increase companies’ involvement in CSR.

The accumulation of non performing financing in economic activities financed by banks can cause problems with the continuity of the bank's operations, if that exceeds certain limits will have potential to stop the bank's activities. This study aims to analyze the influence of bank’s internal variables like  FDR, CAR, BOPO and bank external variables like macroeconomic indicators consisting of exchange rates, inflation and GDP (GDP) against non-Performing Financing (NPF) of Islamic Commercial Banks in Indonesia. The data used are monthly industrial time series of Sharia Commercial Banks (BUS) for the period June 2014 to December 2018 sourced from the Islamic Banking Statistics of the Financial Services Authority, the Central Bureau of Statistics (Badan Pusat Statistik) and Bank Indonesia and analyzed using multiple regression methods. The research implications explain the relationship between the internal variables of the bank company (FDR, CAR and BOPO) and macroeconomic variables (Inflation, Exchange and GDP) on the NPF of Islamic banks in Indonesia so that they can be used as input for the relevant authorities in making policies to suppress NPF at a low level. The variables used can provide an overview of the role of the implementation of sharia public bank governance and existing macroeconomic conditions so that it can produce policies and provisions in the field of sharia banking that are effective and on target. The results showed that the CAR variable had a significant effect on NPF with negative influence. Whereas FDR, BOPO, exchange rate, inflation and GDP have no influence on NPF BUS in IndonesiaKeywords: Non Performing Financing, Non Performing Loan, Islamic Commercial Bank, Indonesia.

The banking sector is the most vital partner of development for countries' economies. It has a remarkable contribution to the country's Gross Domestic Product. This study investigates the relationship between the market interest rate and commercial banks' financial performance. As Bangladesh's banking industry is growing, it is vital to maintain a more robust profitability level for its financial stability and soundness. Banks have some determinants that have a significant impact on their performance. The convenience sampling method is used to select the targeted sample. The study includes the time series data of eight years of fifteen commercial banks listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange in Bangladesh. Multiple variable linear regression and correlation analysis are performed to examine the relationship of market interest rate with banks' profitability with statistical software, IBM SPSS version 25, and Microsoft excel. The study explored that the market interest rate has a significant positive impact on banks' profitability. It is also found that the lending rate and interest rate spread are significantly correlated with the banks' financial performance. Microfinance is a tool designed for poverty alleviation by providing financial services more specifically small credit to the poor household for income generating activities. One of the better ways to help poor people for poverty alleviation is through giving them financial services that cannot be done in traditional banking system. However, there is a big question whether it is possible to provide those services for a financial institution without being sustainable financially. How far it can go with free lunch that is depending on donors’ fund. These two patterns place microfinance at the intersection. One may wonder whether the microfinance compromises a trade-off between serving the poor as social objective and attaining financial sustainability as financial objective. If microfinance institute wishes to get financial sustainability through profit maximization rather ignoring intended social objective of alleviating poverty, than it loses its momentum and becomes like other traditional financial institute. Fulfilling social objective with financial sustainability will be the optimum outcome of microfinance. Microfinance has been pioneered primarily in Bangladesh and later replicated in rest of the world. By this time, over 33 million of clients are being served with various financial and non-financial services by over 700 registered microfinance institute in Bangladesh. This study intent to measure the social outreach versus financial sustainability of microfinance institute in Bangladesh through panel data analysis. To do this, we have analyzed the relationship between financial performance and depth of outreach of top 20 microfinance institutes of Bangladesh from 2015 to 2017. Our results show that the relationship is positive or neutral in some cases. Therefore, microfinance in Bangladesh has been attaining both social and financial objectives and there appears no mission drift.
